Do you have a full shot of the wall with the fireplace? That might help get some perspective. The sconces and print are all very pretty.

Hi... I'd center the sconces over the center of the pilasters on the surround. Mine are about 4-6" in from the edge of the mantel.

I also would center them over the columns on the fireplace.
I LOVE the painting! If you dont care that I am copying, can you tell me where you got it? I have been looking for something just like that for so long and it would be perfect in my family room over the couch. Thanks!

Well, I have kinda gone another direction (I am able to make a UTURN as directed :)

As much as I love the sconces, I also have these candle holders and it seemed like too many candle like objects..so I had recently purchased these little decorative mirrors ($5 for the set!!! couldn't pass them up)

What do you think? I can also paint the clock a different color, maybe even put it on top of some old books, or the old books stacked next to it? I really wanted to use the 3 candle holders (white) but the tallest one is too tall, with the mirror (and with the sconces for that matter)

should the candle holders be scooted in more?

So much easier to tell with the view of the width of your mantel. I'm loving the mirrors. Great U-turn since you have candles on the mantel too. How about this for a little bit of change. I'd switch out mid-sized white candle holder for it's larger version and then switch sides for just the tall ones and skootch them all in as shown in the virutal below.

wow, you guys(gals) rock! I would have NEVER considered mixing them up but that's so much better!!!

what might be the consensus on the colors of the candle holders? Do you think it's even necessary to repaint the blue ones and/or the white ones? I do have some other splashes of blue in the room, some blue vases on the EC.

Ha, that "fake" Kitty is oftentimes, (even by my own kitties) mistaken for a real cat. My dog has even approached it skeptically on numerous occasions.

so more like this? These books were a one time pass through of boxes in the garage, I've got better ones somewhere just need to dig them out. or maybe no books and the clock centered?

Oh I didn't think it was a real kitty. LOL. Though it does look realistic. I have three cats of my own. I never thought how they'd react to another "kitty" in the house.
As much as I love books and these old ones are great for decoration, I think I'd put the clock back where you had it. That way you'll have five items on the mantel and three on the wall which fits the working in threes or fives. Odd numbers for some reason do work the best.
Without the books you can scootch the candles in just a tad more on each side too.
You have a lovely home by the way.

I will remove the books, they didnt' look right to me either, do you think the colors are ok? and I may paint the clock black. which I think will tie together better.

I'm on next to redoing my coffee tables, (I think) since I'm still not sure what I want to do with them. another thread another day. NIGHT NIGHT.

You are very welcome rjinga. I only used Paint which comes with windows for your virtual. It's easier to use for simple things like moving something around. If you want to change color and have the items shadings show through you can't do it with paint. Well not the version I have with Windows Vista anyway. I'm curious if there will be any changes to it on Windows Seven. Seems a friend that's son has it said there were some good changes. My cold is causing my brain to freeze up right now. Not to mention my hubby at the last of the cream pumpkin cake a friend made for us since I've been designing her kitchen. I never bake so it's nice getting "paid" this way! LOL.

since this picture was taken at night with lights on only in that area AND a flash, it's a bit washed out. the color is Valspar Cincinnatian Hotel Briggs Beige, it was a part of something they called National Trust for Historic Preservation? No idea exactly what that is.

But it did work out well for the room. NOW I need NEW FURNITURE :)

I really like where your sconces ended up, very pretty. There must of been a Bombay store near you, that piece you have above your mirror, I have it also. I bought that at Bombay I would say about 10 years ago. I love Bombay.
