Does anybody else's Shaws sink not drain properly?

Got a 30" Shaw's sink. While it's beautiful, we just discovered (after finally getting the plumbing going) that it doesn't drain properly. Water pools in some of the corners. It's really annoying. I know these are handcrafted but still, you'd think the drain part would be sloped properly. That's pretty basic in a sink.

Does anyone else have this problem? I assume there's no way to fix it. Should I complain to Rohl or would that be fruitless?

I had to go check ours after I read your post. It pools too. I suppose we don't notice it because we have the stainless grid in place all the time so it kind of covers it up slightly.

I think this has been talked about before and it is because they are designed awfully flat on the bottom and in the firing there is probably some minor distortion that could pull the corners down (?). I definitely have read in here people mentioning water in the corners.

I’ve had a 30” Shaw at a second home for 10 years and still love it but decided on the 33” Kohler Whitehaven for our new kitchen reno at home - it was such a price difference and looked so similar. I actually like it better! I especially like the slight slant of the bottom to the offset drain. Much easier to rinse scraps into the disposal. It’s still new but it does seems like the Kohler finish is easier to keep clean. We removed the Kohler logo (which was crooked anyway) so it’s just all white and looks great!

Been there, done that! I, too, bought the 36" Shaws single-bowl sink and had it delivered to my cabinet manuf factory. Then at the 11th hour, my mom calls because the house they just moved in to has the same sink and she wasn't too happy with it. Basically, every time they rinsed anything off in the sink she had to grab the sprayer and rinse out the entire bowl. She also complained that bc the drain was located to one side of the sink, the faucet spray didn't reach the hole and she is forced to use the spray arm to rinse stuff down the disposal. I panicked and switched to the 36" two bowl version). Fortunately the plumbing supplier didn't charge me the restocking fee probably bc I was ordering another (more expensive) sink from them. They even delivered it to my cab manuf and picked up the other sink. I have the 36" two bowl installed and I really like it. I'm so glad I switched to the two bowl. As far as sheer size - what is the scale of the other features in your kitchen? If everything else is in a smaller proportion, the sink will seem huge. If you have a large range or large refrig, you could be OK. If you'd feel better about the 30", talk to the plumbing supplier to see if they can waive the restocking fee if you are purchasing another sink. Good luck!

I went to the web site for this sink. It's 1 1/2" thick on the bottom, so over tightening would be unlikely. David's suggestion of a thermal stress sounds like the problem. Pouring boiling water into the sink without running water from the faucet to temper the heat could be the cause. When I ordered a corian sink with a countertop, the homeowner was cautioned not to do the above without turning on the faucet first. Ron

Theresse, I think you are missing the easiest solution of all! Don't ever hand wash dishes!! There! Problem solved. My bill will be in the mail.... ;-P I had a similar problem, and played with the bump out for about a week, trying to get all those variables right: back comfort (since no toe kick with vintage cabinets), spout reach, counter corners resting on the lip in a way that looked pleasing to my eye. My cabinet guy thought I was an OCD loon! (Which I am, but that is between me and my doctor. Not my cabinetmaker.) I have the chicago faucet with the 12" double hinged spout. It wasn't my favorite spout, but the length was right. Actually, if I remove the extender piece, the straight part that only reaches 8 or 9 inches was the most period appropriate. That is the style one sees the most on the original kitchens in "Bungalow Kitchens" (I assume you have that kitchen bible!). We also have one of those (1929 original) in our garage. But those are paired with the traditional tiled-in sink, the back of which goes all the way to the backsplash. They are way too short for farm sinks. So I went with the 12 incher. I love that it reaches the edge of my drain. My previous faucet couldn't be directed right into the drain due to misalignment, and it always bugged me. But the gooseneck sure is prettier! These Shaw's sinks are a marriage of compromise. Think of the sink like a husband. So his faucet length isn't as long as you'd like. Is it a dealbreaker? Nah! The important thing is to go into the relationship with your eyes open.

I've got the same sink you have, Colickyboy. It drains perfectly -- but has a cosmetic defect on the rim that I didn't notice for at least 2-3 weeks after installation. Luck of the draw with these handcrafted sinks, I suppose.

We took marbles with us when picking up our Shaws to test the drainage. The 1st one was terrible. The 2nd one was better but not perfect. That's part of the beast for the Shaws. If you want perfect drainage then you should go to another sink. I think it bothers my DH more than me. It would bother him even more if he knew how much we spent on the sink "that doesn't drain properly" Sigh...

Shoot...had no idea it'd be luck of the draw. Must've missed it when it was discussed previously on this forum. Can't believe you spend this amount of money and water pools!

I was so in love with my 30" Shaw farmhouse sink, then plumbing got installed and water pools in two corners quite a lot. I can not believe it! These sinks have been around so long. Proper drainage was not even something I imagined could be a problem. I am really worried about how it will be when I am actually cooking in the kitchen and using it. It will take more mindfulness and effort to keep clean. Has anyone had their Shaw sink replaced because of this? How hard is that after cabinets and counters are all in? Hope someone has encouraging words. I would love this not to be a problem. Might it be something one gets used to.
