My new kitchen - need your feedback! take 2 with layout

I love gardenweb and all your ideas/feedback/comments etc.
I am gutting a kitchen
*using American Woodowork cabinets from home depot (reading maple linen). White shaker type
*gray counter - probably caesarstone
*white carrara marble 3x6 subway tile backsplash
*under-mount stainless sink
*36 inch viking range (from current house) w chimney hood
Looking for your feedback! Let me know your thoughts and opinions. I want them. '

William, yes, it might work. I'll try it out and see how narrow the cabinets on either side of range would need to be. Thanks for the idea! Aokat, I do have a first floor plan. I've been puzzling over it, feeling the same way that you do -- there must be a better overall plan! Here's our current first floor plan: From Kitchen Remodel And here's a "blank slate" version where I tried taking out all the walls that I felt could move around. From Kitchen Remodel The wall down the current range side of the kitchen (middle of the house) is load bearing. We are already planning to have to move that -- would be great if we didn't need to, but seems unlikely. Into this front of the house area, we need a living room (doesn't need to be as big as the current one, but needs enough space for an adult conversation area), a dining room (large enough to seat 8 comfortably), a kitchen, and a coat closet (doesn't have to be right at the entryway, but shouldn't be too hard to get to from the front door). We also need wall space for a piano. Would love to hear any thoughts you have!

I am not an expert on clearances at all, so I'll leave that to others. We ended up putting our microwave right next to our fridge, since we mostly use it for heating up leftovers. If you use yours in the same way, that's the spot I'd recommend. We didn't do anything built in, just a small one on the countertop. Will the left side of the island be where you would normally keep cookbooks? Will they be easy to consult there? If so, I'd go with shelves. I see low shelves like that as unlikely to be a "display" focal point, when you are likely to be giving folks some beautiful countertop to look at instead. (Another idea would be a wine rack, if you are red wine drinkers.) If you want to use baskets instead of shelves... I associate the wicker baskets with potato and onion storage. I would look for the kind that slide out on wooden rails, rather than just having baskets that sit in the opening. I have always imagined that the basket would scratch up the wood if you were pulling them out often. If you were doing that use, I'd face them along the galley rather than on the end of the island. There's also a photo floating around here somewhere with an island that has a built-in cubby for a roll of paper towels... it strikes me that you might have a good use for that on that corner of your island, since it's right near the fridge (where spills often start).

just an update - I realized that if I went with the miele integrated fridges I could get more room for my coat closet/cleaning supplies closet. So now instead of the subzero 27" columns I think I'm going to get the 18" freezer 30" fridge miele combo. The freezer has 8 cu ft. which whhile nothing compared to the 16 cu ft of the subzero will be ample freezer storage for us. this gets me 6 more inches! whohooo!!! The fabricator finally called the stone yard and put a hold on my calacatta gold and I'm hoping to get pictures of the slabs soon so I can figure out how many I'll need (I want as much swaths of white without too much veining as possible) and I got the finishes from henrybuilt. very pretty quartersewn walnut....

Blfenton, good point about building in extra shelving or storage under the overhang. I will look into it. Technicolor, I am going back and forth on closing up the kitchen entry wall. I am waiting to hear whether a pillar hidden in that wall will be enough support to replace the rest of the wall. If that saves $$, then it will be the way to go. Then I would have space for the appliances too. Sena, good idea about the shallow cabinet. Will try it in the planner. The door swing can be changed but it could clash with the outside door. In the summer we use that door a lot and I can already envision a crash, bang sequence! Somebody had once suggested to take down the entire wall till the shoe closet and replace it with a railing. We liked that idea but it might not be a smart thing to do with regards to heating and cooling zones. Will investigate that angle further.. Thanks for all the suggestions! Please feel free to add more-I am still in the tweaking stage.

Right now you have a really big walking area with your triangle. I would place an Island in the center, move stove to Island, and stick fridge where stove is. Use other side of Island for stool seating.

If you're not able to move your stove, then I would get rid of the counter space you have sticking out, stick fridge there and still do an Island. Just use cabinets to make your Island so you still have storage.

I like it! The stools are handy for the prep area, but separate from your main work area. All the windows are nice, too. Are you planning to have a table there or maybe just a window seat?

I was going to do a built in banquette with a table. Thinking tulip base and maybe use the left over counter material or a complimentary stone. Also would not mind using bar stools at table - since i have kids.

I also was going to get one or two Ghost chairs to sit.

I like it too. Although being me I'd probably uncenter the sink to get more work room on the stove side.

Since like you I don't really need counter seating, I think I'd at least play with the possibility of cutting off the peninsula counter to see how I liked that. It would open up the room, and probably particularly benefit the dining/socializing area, which would no longer be tucked into the rather compact space formed by the peninsula counter. Very little work space would be lost since all counter on the outside wall would be usable (no corner). Anyway, most of my work would be at the other end, rather than facing the table, which is what I would like the peninsula for. I could then add another 3' of tall storage on the inside wall.

Whatever, I also really like your current finish choices. I'll take the whole package, no changes. :)

how many formats have you drawn up without the peninsula? One note as well, there is no patio door....is it true the only passages to other rooms are down from fridge and next to range...[nothing going outside??].As per rosie, once you eliminate peninsula, I would look at range placed between two windows on long wall, a rearrangement of sink and fridge, but you'd gain the several feet on inside wall.... down from fridge.....place a small sink there and a slightly smaller cleanup sink further up on long wall,for example. The reason I might do it without peninsula is the fact of the closed space....especially banquette end,,,,,and I would want a lot of options with banquette table/bench and chairs around it.....the peninsula seating doesn't provide you with anything the banquette can't accomplish with it's variety and number of seating positions....It seems it will be a destination and I would want to maximize that.
