Outdoor Christmas Ideas???

I need some ideas for decorating for Christmas outside without using our usual lights around the house. Can you share pics of your home in the past or inspiration pics for outside decor. When I was growing up someone simply used the letters N O E L in their yard which lit up at night. I thought about getting a large lighted wreath for above our garage. DH is a bit burned out on putting up lights- he had to do it 3 times one year b/c the wind blew the lights around. Then the second round of clear mini lights had several burned out. He started all over the third time with brand new old fashioned colored lights.LOL! Please share some simple yet original ideas! Thank You!

Hmmmm, I think outdoor decs should reflect the homeowners' personality and the general feel of the inside decorations. What I mean, is that a home with more formal decs inside looks better with something similar outside. I like fun, cute outside decs when the homeowner's inside decs are similarly cute. So, how do you decorate the inside of your home? If it's more formal, perhaps just a couple of animated deer might be nice. You could add luminaries or other lights down your walkway and add more lights in potted decs on either side of your front door. For a fun, more animated look, I'm sure others here will have lots of great ideas for you. There are certainl6y a lot to choose from these days! Good luck! Lynn

Mitchdesj - your urns look wonderful! I have a wrought iron planter on the front porch that I am going to try a similar look - thanks for the idea. Also, kind of an upgrade on the tomato cage and topiary form suggestion, I clipped pics from an old cottage living - actually two different issues where the editor decorated her urns - one for fall, one for Christmas. She used the grapevine trees - the tall (3 ft.) slim ones. They sit in the urns and I am thinking both pics had magnolia leaves around the base of the tree. The Christmas pic she had some more greenery added in around the tree and a few ornaments. The fall one had ivy along with the magnolia leaves and small pumpkins/gourds placed in the urn also. Both look great. I like the topiary forms and we use tomato cages ourselves (upside down) in warmer months for some of our vines. But with nothing growing on them and during the daytime when not lit, they look a bit sparse. On the grapevine trees, you can also use lights. I was actually able to find the trees prelit. tina

You might want to check into Krylon's spray paint for glass. I think it would still adhear and be translucent. It only comes in red, yellow and blue, but those are the primary colors so you may be able to overlay them and make your secondary colors. That may or may not work. It doesn't mention plastic, but it says craft foam, so I'm thinking there's a possibility it will work on plastic too. It does say indoor/outdoor though. Another throught would be to check out the craft paints for those that are meant for outdoors. By adding glaze to them or float you could have a brushable translucent paint. Garland with lights around the front door? A lighted wreath on a fence gate? One of those lighted wire sculptures ... angel, deer, etc.? We have a sitting deer that needs new lights. I bought the lights last year on sale now it's up to dh to put the damn things on, lol.

These 3 guys were standards for years until they started to fall apart. They were lighted with a spotlight at night.

I don't have pics, but I bought small trees from Grandinroad (I think) last year to line our stone walk. It looked so pretty with the trees meandering along the path and the trees even look fine during the day when some decorations don't. They come with either white or colored lights. I chose the colored since we had done candles in the windows and a Moravian star in front of the window under the porch for so many years. I bought six and then ordered more after Christmas for this year because six wasn't quite enough. Amazingly, they really aren't tacky. Still, I do love the 'ditto' idea! Too bad our neighbors don't do enough to justify that. LOL.

You actually do see the head, it's just upside down. The red lights are blood if that helps.

cyn427, how do you keep the trees from falling over when it's really windy? I wanted to do something like that after going to Branson one Christmas, but couldn't figure out how to anchor them without tacky guy wires.

tomorrow, I can see some of my neighbors (not immediate ones) doing that. And we wonder why rednecks get a bad name. ;) One year a neighbor had a huge stuffed santa costume face down on their roof like Santa crash landed.

Too funny tomorrow! Someone decorates down south in hunting country with a sense of humor!
The ditto is so funny as well.
Here it is traditional to put the electric candles in each window and a wreath on the front door. It is so festive and the whole house is warm and glowing.
We also would string white lights through the shrubbery and along the top of the iron fence. The lights ran through a red bowed wreath hanging on the two street ends of the fence. Looks beautiful in the snow but sure are tired of wind knocking out parts of the string, which usually only happens on the coldest days before Christmas!

marti, the trees have a post that is inserted into the ground. I have had a little trouble with slight leaning now and then on one or two, but I just pull them up and stick them back in if I can't push them back upright. Very easy. The only downside was repacking them. It is hard to flatten the branches again, so I couldn't close up the boxes they came in. They don't look dusty, but probably are. First rain will take care of that, though!! I really do like them-oh and I plugged in more in a line than they said with no problems.

natal, funny response about the hummingbird feeder! You're probably right.

Funny, I never even noticed that feeder. I'm sure it is gross since it's still hanging in the tree, in what I presume to be, DECEMBER.

susieQ--your slideshow is darling! I love those wreaths with the horns and candles :)

Natal, did you buy those sweet stick deer or make them? They are cute!
