Ideas for table centerpiece?

I'm looking for an inexpensive, classic Christmas table centerpiece for my dining room table. I'm thinking candles, berries and/or greenery, etc.

I've always done that with whatever kind of container, basket, or bowl I can unearth from the basement - occasionally have even used the clear plastic containers baked goods come in. When I buy my wreaths from the farmers market, they'll usually give me an assortment of their evergreen trimmings; if I need to augment that, I have a variety of yews, spruce, junipers, mugos etc. in my own yard. A block of floral foam and a new supply of candles from a craft store and I'm good to go. The floral foam holds a lot of water, so a live arrangement will generally hold its needles until I'm tired of looking at it sometime around mid-January.

If you've ever been to, or have seen books on Christmas in Colonial Williamsburg, they do simply stunning extremely simple table decorations with fruit (mainly apples and oranges) and a little greenery.

Last year I went to Safeway and geot a bunch of reddish/orange roses (I think the whole bunch cost $15) and some pepper berries. I put some wet oasis in a crystal/glass bowl and arranged the flowers/pepper berries (I cut the stems real short). I put the bowl on top of a retagular table mirror w/votive candle around the bowl. It looked really pretty and I already had everything but the flowers (and oasis). You can do the sane thing w/apples/pomegranates/pears (put wood skewer stick into them to stick into the oasis and you could add boxwood, or other greens. Hope this helps!

I threw a baby shower for DH's physician's assistant last Spring and used small children's books, opened and propped up on easels, for my centerpieces. I placed each one on a plate and used a children's cup (borrowed from many friends) filled with fresh flowers next to it. I'm a very practical person (DH says that it's my Scottish ancestory) ans I wanted to use things that could be put to good use afterwards. The books were great conversation starters, as everyone was talking about their own favorite childrens' books. AND the mom-to-be got to take them all home afterwards for her new baby, She loved it! If you need to stick with a bunny theme, there are many cute books out there to choose from: "I Am A Bunny" by Ole Rissom; "Goodnight Moon" & "The Runaway Bunny" by Margaret Wise Brown; "Boo Bunny" by Kathryn Galbraith (my sweet cousin); "Pat The Bunny"; "The Tale of Benjamin Bunny", etc. I imagine that with Easter coming fairly soon, you can find a number of Easter books and Golden books with bunny themes,as well. Thanks all. :-) I'm looking forward to setting up a "pumpkin themed" table for the brunch we're having on Thanksgiving for my parents. I'll switch out the centerpiece to include my large ceramic pumpkin tureen (it matches the little bowls I just got) and the bowls will be serving pieces for that meal. I'll post pictures when I get it all set up. DD, I really didn't do much decorating. A table in the living room, the fireplace mantle, the front window, and the outdoor basket is all (aside from the dining table, of course). All very minimally done. My thanksgiving stuff fits in three smallish boxes...a far cry from the tubs and boxes for Halloween. You're right, I don't have the energy for much after October! :-)

I think lowspark's postcards idea is brilliant. You can arrange them at different heights, perhaps mixed with that curly, spirally stuff called ting-ting, stuck into a painted styrofoam base to make a really inexpensive but cute centerpiece. Look for one of those catalogs like orientaltradingco.com (I think their paper catalog is better, or best of all just call them) -- they have tons of cheap stuff on every imaginable theme, and I know they have paper flags. Think outside the box when searching -- like, use "fiesta" to find things that could work for your Madrid table or "carnival" for Paris. It might be easier if you could get her to expand the theme to "international fantasy" instead of limiting herself to Europe -- then you could also have a tropical island table, a Chinese table, a Japanese table, African, Brazilian, Jamaican, and for that matter New Orleans and NYC, etc. -- then you can start with what you find and choose your cities/countries that way instead of the other way around. Kind of drawing the bullseye around the arrow.

so we "named" our tables after our favorite writers/philosophers. I found wonderful quotes that involved marriage, love or friendship from each of the writers/philosophers, and framed it (with 5x7 frames). People said they really enjoyed going from table to table to read what the other quotes said; it encouraged mingling! Each table had a stack of hardback books and i wrapped them in a thick piece of ribbon that matched the bridesmaids dresses and then wrapped that in a thin piece of rafia and tied it on top. (does that make any sense?). Instead of a table number we used quotes so i went to bed bath and beyond and bought 10 frames (about 10 bucks each) and typed up a quote from the author of the table. For instance there was a JD Salinger table and it said: Salinger Table It's just like a girl to go ahead and do that they wind up saying something amazing and you go falling head over heels in love with them (okay that isn't the exact quote but it was something like that from catcher). So the picture frame with the quote was placed on top of the books so it was higher and easy to read and on either side I had two little candles and I tied rafia around the clear candle holders to match the kind on the books. This idea is an obvious fit for academic/literary types, but could be extra funny with cheap romance novels and pulp fiction, which you can get for pennies at any second hand store. Stack 'em and wrap 'em in ribbons Â suddenly trashy fiction becomes an entertaining conversation piece. Stick a wedding-branded bookmark in 'em and they're kitchy favors! Like Muglies, only readable.

Another idea is to get a tall glass urn shape or hurricane and gently stack silver and gold or red and green Christmas ornaments inside and place some pine cones or evergreen sprigs on the table near the glass base.

I just did mine last night. I used a round glass vase and filled with shades of solid green and green/blue glass ball ornaments. It looks very pretty and so easy and CHEAP! The hard part was choosing which ornaments to buy.

Could also use cranberries and limes in a glass vessel, either with or without flowers.

There is a florist near me (called Beneva) that has lots of pics on their website. I also like to look at The Knot. It's a wedding site but there are lots of fabulous designs for centerpieces.
