Range hood and insert questions

Greg posted this photo on another thread, and I am reposting with a few more questions.

It's time for us to order the insert. I really, really have no idea what I'm doing here, but it looks like people really like the Vent-a-hood insert for power and quiet running.

If you built your own hood, did you use any plans or just build it around the insert?

On one like the photo above, is the space inside the cabinet usable? All like it I've seen don't have doors, unless they are hidden.

Our stove top is 30, glass top". We're not going with the extra gas burners after all. We'll replace with induction in a few years. So I'm planning a 36" insert.

Does that usually mean the entire width is 36" (excluding the wood hood), or is it actually wider or more narrow?

Anything else I need to know before buying the insert?

We're in the process of having cabinets installed this week and have a wood hood with an insert. We ended up going with a 42in Faber Inca insert for our 36in Bluestar rangetop.

We had to select the insert first, and our cabinetmaker used the specs to build the wood hood. We have an arch similar to the one in the photo, and the cabinets above ours are somewhat useful, but the cabinetmaker had to put a false back inside to hide the ductwork for the hood blower. We chose to make it look like 3 small doors, 1 solid in the center and 2 on the sides with glass panels and cabinet lights, so they will be mostly decorative- for a nice plate or glassware, not sure yet. It all evolved from a need to hide the ductwork and still want a bit of glass on that wall to break up all the wood.

Thanks labbie. Is the ductwork just a big tube through the center?

I like the mantle look to be able to put a picture or big platter, or maybe even a clock like the photo above. I just hate having unused space I guess. lol

Right now I put my pitchers in the cabinet above the cook top because it's the only place tall enough. If I lose that space, I'll have to store them in another room.

We are in need of ventilation for our 31.5" French range. It's not a flame thrower like some newer ranges but we cook most of our meals and often at high heat settings for meat and vegetables. We only have 19" between the bottom of the hood and the ceiling. We have a structural beam running right above the center line of the future hood. This leaves us two options: 1) we can do a double 90 immediately out of the insert--from there it is a 3' straight run to the roof, or 2) we can have the insert or hood custom made to have the duct exit offset 10" or so to clear the beam. This would leave us with a straight shot to the roof. Modernaire charges $240 for the custom work. This leads to my first question: In your estimation, would you get more performance from a 400cfm motor with a straight duct run or a 600cfm motor with a double 90? The cost difference between the 400 and 600 is about the same as the custom charge. The hood will be 36" wide. Second question: If we buy an insert now, can it be installed while we decide what we're going to do about the canopy/surround? Thank you.

It might be easier to think of this hood as being comprised of two assemblies. The outer assembly is made of wood parts rigidly bonded or otherwise attached together to generally resemble a cabinet without a base. The inner assembly (called a liner) is a metal shell that incorporates (hopefully) a set of baffles, light and motor controls, lights, and, optionally, a blower. The blower subassembly comprises a fan blade sub-assembly and a motor sub-assembly. Alternatively, if an external blower is used, then there is also a cover and damper as part of the blower assembly. I would not expect a typical cabinet maker to supply the liner assembly, but may want it on hand to fit to it. As I don't have one of these, I welcome any refinements of my description that may be needed.

Well some kitchens are designed with the upper cabinet opening 6" wider than the range to accommodate. The 24" depth is what I would think is unusual for a non pro range or cooktop. Your head would be underneath a 24" or deeper range hood. The canopy of the range hood is not coincident with the workings of the range hood. My cheapo range hood, which will be replaced when the kitchen is renovated has a motor and screen that is about 12" wide and deep in a 36" wide range hood. And that is probably what is in the 24" wide and 30" wide hoods. The inserts are smaller because they are just the guts and are meant to be put into s larger canopy, because a certain amount of that big hood is not motor or fan it's empty real estate.

Sorry long to respond, I can't respond to posts at work (but at least I can see the board!). Yes, our duct is 10inches due to the requirements of our rangetop, but I'm not sure what the average size is- 6 or 8 maybe? Ours has to go up from the rangehood at a slight angle then straight over the the left to vent outside.

Our cabinets above hood are more decorative vs. useful and because we placed the hood as high as possible within the specs to accommodate our height when cooking.

Thanks labbie. We still need to check to see what is above our cooktop. Chances are we will have an angle also.

Do most people try to listen to the insert or hood before buying to know how loud it really is?

we were able to listen to ours, as the showroom had one installed over a range they used for cooking classes. It was less cfm than the one we ordered, but we would hope not to be using it at full speed to often anyway.

Unless you use the EXACT same ductwork (EVERY turn, every length) the odds are that your installation will NOT sound the same.

If the cabinets are built you may well need a sheet metal shop to build a hood to fit, and then you can use on outside blower).

Lighting and controls are another issue.

Oh, definitely agree that you can't go solely by any type of "demo". We were aware it would not sound exactly the same, and in fact will be louder as we are not using an external blower. All that said, between research on features we were looking for within our price range we were satisfied between what we saw and the research we did.
