Best or Broan range hood?
Comments (9)A typical range hood maintains a similar position directly above a cooking surface, most often the stove. Range hoods should be wide enough to cover this surface entirely. The hood consists of a skirt positioned over this surface at a height that is comfortable for the average user. The skirt surrounds grease filters backed by a fan that sucks air into the unit. Fans may feature several speed options. Most fans have at least two speed settings, one designed for operation during cooking, and one that is much quieter to be used during meals. Some advanced models have an automatic fan feature that turns the fan on when temperatures get too high. This feature is a signal to the fan that steam or smoke might be present in the air and the fan should be operating. Range hoods can also feature automatic shut-off timer options. Comments (23)I've only ever dealt with powered MUA in commercial applications. In residential, just dampers that are interlocked with the hood. Yes powered ventilation is obviously more effective than passive ventilation, but a simple damper has done the job in any residential application I've ever seen, integrated with the HVAC system if needed. The separate switch would only make sense if you were doing a separate blower which I think is overkill for most residential. As I said before, simple is the key! Simple design, simple to operate, simple to service. Most people just want to be able to turn the fan to a certain speed and get cooking. They don't want to futz around with a bunch of variable speed controls balancing exhaust flow with intake. And I'm never a fan of putting complicated crap like that into a house that only makes sense to the owner. You're going to flummox guests and future owners for no real advantage. Of course, if you are going to connect to the HVAC system, you should have a HVAC person who can deal with that, including automatic blower activation if needed and making sure you're not bringing too much outside air into your return duct. This goes especially if you have gas heat. You do not want to kill your heat exchanger prematurely. Makeup air has been a real problem in the residential appliance biz. Clueless salesmen/kitchen designers spec'ing these gigantic ranges and gigantic accompanying hoods (often that are too powerful for even the gigantic ranges), and they have no idea there could possibly be a consequence. Kudos to Broan for coming up with a prepackaged solution that does not require an engineering degree to understand and use, or any expert for that matter (although as I said above, an HVAC tech's help may be needed for some installs). I guess you could rig up a dedicated blower and resistance heater for the kitchen, but most people I know would rather ditch the prostyle range than cough up the cash to install and operate that. Nobody is "interested" in MUA. It is not a creature comfort. Either you need it or you don't. If you don't, there's no point spending the $$$ for it. Comments (16)>>>>>How is the function, noise, etc? Is it annoying keeping that glass clean? The hood works well. I guess it's a bit loud but I only need to use it on "High" occasionally. I don't really have much basis for comparison. I had to truncate the stainless flue covers because they are intended for an 8' to 10' ceiling height. The soffit conceals a structural beam, so I was unable to eliminate it...resulting in a 7' ceiling along that wall (the ceiling is sloped). Insofar as the glass...I'm not certain if you're asking about the glass backsplash or the glass hood but in either case, they are no more difficult to keep clean than any other kitchen surface. Comments (1)You need to check the specs and make sure that all of the wood is covered by metal if you choose a smaller insert. I don't think the Broan you're talking about here will do that. It's a fire hazard otherwise. Choosing a wood hood is never a cheap choice. $1200 honestly is not a bad price at all for an insert with the capabilities that you need. Then there's the 2-3K for the wood surround. And the ducting, if it's not in place. And the electrical work, and the time intensive work of the cabinet installer to make it all work together. By the time you add up all of those additional costs that you're not thinking about here, that little bit of difference between something that might do the job, and something that will do the job is negligible. If you want to go cheaper, do a stainless chimney hood or an old fashioned under cabinet stainless steel hood....See Morekaseki
