MCM Fireplace -- Help me pick a mantel shelf
Comments (13)Question re mahogany: you might want to make sure that the mahogany you use is sustainably sourced...it's gorgeous but it's a major rainforest wood and is being poached, as it were, destroying habitat left and right. You can look for something that is called "FSC certified" if you're in question about the source of the wood. OR you can look on a craigslist for someone selling downed lumber that's been milled locally. I love using that kind of wood. Make sure it's dried sufficiently as well. This might get into the range of *you* having to do the sourcing; there are plenty of aspects of our remodel where we know that a contractor would have stopped *long* before we would have been happy...the truly custom sometimes involves extra *extra* legwork on the owner's part. I look so forward to re-doing our mantel--it will be locally milled walnut, I hope. Have you checked craigslist? You can even start looking in "services" for arborists who might know people who have recently cut down a walnut tree. Then it would have local resonance too, rather than being just another product....See More1950s Kitchen Design Element Help-MCM Lite?

Comments (5)Offset fireplaces aren't really planned to be main focal points or centers of furniture arrangement for all of the furniture in the room. Particularly if you are going to use midcentury furniture, you can ignore the fireplace to some extent. Not completely but you don't have to center the room on it....See More1960 MCM design ideas
Comments (18)Patricia, you need to be careful about your statements :-) My original degree was in architecture (second degree was landscape architecture) and I was a teaching assistant for all the undergrad architectural history classes. I do know what I am talking about! Not every architectural style generated in the mid 20th century can be attributed to midcentury modern. That is a very distinct style that has very distinct and defined components that I outlined already. A ranch style house built in the 60's is NOT automatically classified as MCM, although it can be modified to have more of those attributes than it typically would possess. MCM design seems to have a bit of a cachet about it and everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon for whatever reason. But not every house built midcentury will qualify as MCM - the OP's certainly does not despite your claims. Neither the roofline or the carport are distinctly MCM but common to any number of 20th century residential architectural styles. But it could be updated to include some MCM elements if the OP was willing to shell out the bucks. Just paint color and landscaping is not gonna do it!...See Moreteacats
