thanks for the post, Hestia. I have been looking at these since you posted about it. Is it a drop in sink and how much space does it leave front to back? For example, would there be enough rim to do granite? How would the draindish sit on top of a hard surface such as granite?

It is a drop in sink only in the sense that you drop it in onto the cabinet - there is no ledge in front or in back for granite - (imagine a stainless countertop with a sink joined to it.) It has the same height as a countertop and sits flush with the countertop to the left and to the right (the front is counter height stainless.) So the granite is placed next to the sink. You would actually require smaller square footage for the granite, as you do not have to cut a hole out of it.

Ah ha, I think I get it. So could buy the prefab granite and diy since I do not have to worry about a sink cutout, like with the Ikea domsjo sinks? Did you hae to drill the holes for the insta hot, and the soap dispenser? Thanks for your answers! This is growing on me.

Yes, that is the main reason we first thought about getting it, was that we were not confident in our ability to use a router - I was thinking about this after I posted, and at first was disapointed that we could not afford the soapstone that I really, really wanted. However, if I were to do it again and had to make the same choices 1) undermount with soapstone, or: 2) this sink (and the faucets it came with second hand) and butcher block, I would pick this sink hands down. Everybody's needs/dwaires are different though.

- you should read online at the Kohler site - it gives exact dimensions. It comes predrilled with three holes (check the ebay description just to make sure, but all the literature that Kohler has is linked below.) You can see in my first photo above how the holes are spaced. That could be a drawback if you wanted them elsewhere - they work fine for me. I would really ask lots of questions from the seller with all the information in hand after looking at the "dimensions" and "installation" instructions at Kohler. (Be aware that the faucet in the photo on the Kohler site does not come with the sink.) I strongly feel that the cutting board is necessary in order to fully use the surface - it is sold separately through Kohler, however is over $100. Hope it works out for you - I'm off enjoying the 4th today!

Thanks for the links. Does the drainboard drain into the smaller disposal sink? It looks like there is a lip between the drainboard and the disposal sink. Also, I like your location of the faucet (to the left) better thank on the Kohler webstie (centered).

We leveled our base cabinets very level, so the water doesn't automatically drain at an angle to the sink - I believe some other makers (maybe it was Elkay?) have sinks with a drainboard which is slanted - this one is flat with slightly raised dividers parallel with the front and back of the sink. There is no lip, however. It is pretty easy to clean. I can spray water on it if I want, but the drying grid is hinged at almost the mid point, so you can lift up half at a time to give it a quick wipe. (The drying grid can also be folded in half and placed over the sinks to drip into the sink if you want - keeps kids from filling the sink with dirty dishes instead of loading them into the dishwasher :) It wipes very easily and smoothly into the smaller basin.

I clean it down every night, but give it an extra thorough cleaning on the weekend, For those times, I slide the butcher block over to cover the larger of the sinks; fold up the rack and place it next to the butcher block (they both stay elevated over the sink on the front/back lip of the sink) then clean up under the rack. Then I move the rack back over to the drainboard, slide the butcher block over, and clean up the sinks with Barkeeper's Friend - it leaves a nice shine. During the week I use dish soap, and a sponge.

When we make waffles, I remove the grid, put the waffle maker on the drainboard with the butcher block over the smaller sink which is the "counter" for my bowl of batter. Very easy clean up.

FYI, I don't use a disposal in the disposal sink - we compost, and I'll just scrape all the plant cuttings off of the board and into a bowl, (since I can slide the board, I can place a bowl on the bottom of the large sink to scrape into) and it gets emptied into the compost bin under the sink.

The butcher block was a bit beat up when I first had it - (the sink is second hand to us). I sanded it down, used mineral oil a few days in a row, and now rub it once a week with beeswax melted into mineral oil. It really doesn't take more than 15 minutes once a week to both thoroughly clean the 60" of sink and oil the butcher block.

I can't take any credit for the location of the faucet - they were attached to the sink (faucets and soap dispenser came with my sink, as it was second hand off of CraigsList). I considered moving the lever on our faucet however the width of the faucet where the lever is would make it difficult to use the lever on the right. It would be too crowded. It has worked fine for us on the left. You will need to commit to a single lever (I think) and you should have the lever either on the back, left or front - just a thought, so you don't choose a faucet that requires a right handed install.

Granted, it is not the "usual" sink - but I have told my husband that if we ever move, the sink comes with us. And he knows I'm not kidding.

You're welcome. A last piece of advice - I agree if you are in the paper stages that you wait - I kept looking on ebay and on CraigsList in my area and in the surrounding geographic areas as far out as I was willing to travel (I was looking for one of a few different similar types of sinks - counter height/modular/"work top" etc. - they are called all different sorts of things. My point is that I eventually found what turned out to be the perfect sink for me at a very good price with high end faucets included. I did not think that I wanted those faucets, but turns out that I love them. As the finish on the faucet is a fairly new one, I figured out that the set was less than three years old. I paid less than half of what the one on ebay is going for, and if you include the faucets/soap pump, I paid about 12% of what it all cost new. And I paid what I could afford. I also drove almost three hours there and three hours back to pick it up. These sinks don't come up that often, but if you are patient and look daily, you may just get a deal. Best!
