Traverse Rod for a 10' span

I need to purchase a traverse for my 8' wide window. I am flanking it with stationary panels that will sit partially behind the sides of the window which will bring it out to about 10' wide and then may be brought in at the sides by draping over the hook and kissing the floor. Is there a rule of thumb so that it looks in proportion? I was thinking a thicker rod would be more appropriate--like 1-1/4". Perhaps even a wooden rod with a support pole in the center. I would like to use clip rings to hang the panels which are inverted pleat silk taffeta.

Are there some good places to shop for the larger/bigger rods without breaking the blank.

Would love to see pics from anyone with the wider windows.

Bed Bath & Beyond has very large rods and rods that you can buy extension pieces for.

My window alone is 150" across. I wanted the rod to extend a bit past the sides of the window. I purchased an 8' and a 6' wooden rod, stained it, and put them together with a rod extender screw thing.

Fivefootzero: Is your pictured rod realy a traverse rod or is it a decorator rod? On my monitor yours looks like a beautiful rod but one where you open and close your draperies by hand - one side at a time.

It's a cord-tension pulley system attached to the wall that makes a rod a traverse rod. Pulling on the cords moves both flanking panels open or closed at the same time.

Yes, my drapes stack on one side but pull all the way across the traverse rod, which has a center support. My rod is only six feet long, about twenty years old, bought at JCPenney. The center support is all but invisible. One hundred inches is a long way to go without center support for heavy drapes. Wouldn't the rod sag?

This is a crazy idea, but have you thought about removing the picture molding? It would take away the issue of where to hang the rod. Hanging the rod as high as possible will heighten the ceiling. If you leave the molding up - it may just look like its floating and out of place above the rod. I think drapes would be beautiful and they don't have to be overly full when they are closed, that way you don't have a ton of fabric stacked on the wall. But you have plenty of space (40" for the stackback). And opening one set of panels is simpler than having blinds on the doors and then panels on the side windows. That would be a bit more cumbersome to open and close 4 things. If you get a nice decorative traverse rod - that would make for very easy operation. (one set of cords to the right or left to draw.

My DishDrawer is 12 years old. Three months ago, replaced cracked drain hoses ($80), upper drawer LCD board with dead backlight ($58) which was only for aesthetics (it doesn't prevent the drawer from running), and $249 for an update kit of four lid motors (improved design) and revised hose supports (metal swing arms instead of plastic rods), and a mains/floodsensor board (nothing was wrong with the original but a new one was included in the kit). Hopefully is good-to-go for another 12+ years.

I really think dummy rods are strange looking. Curtains are supposed to cover windows...dummy rods throw out the pretense of that. I’d use a full rod and thick drapes that would look like they could fully cover the window. I remember a designer I worked with once told me things needed to look authentic and make sense. Dummy rods do neither.

Use this link to look at various brands that have traverse rods in lengths that even exceed what you want.

You might also try Penney's or any other place that does custom window treatments, as they would have access to longer traverse rods.

Mine is just a decorative wood rod, and my curtains are really never closed...so you are right in that I would have to open/close manually. I do know what a traverse rod is though...and I believe Bed Bath & Beyond carries rods that size as my sister in law got one from there and we have the same house and same windows.

Sorry, Five, no inference intended.

I just saw you had two support brackets along your rod's length and wondered how a drape with center split could traverse those supports.

But then I haven't used draperies on traverse rods in years either and maybe bypassing a support is possible today.

JC Penny sells many sizes of traverse rods. I have a triple window in the back that I put pinch pleat drapes and pinch pleat sheers on. They are on a huge traverse double rod that also has a rod for the valance.
