Cool ways to cover up the Vent-A-Hood

I recently found a kitchen featured in an old edition (2008) of BH&Gardens...fell in love with the copper Vent-A-Hood. Just wondering if you all know if I could find something like that OR something unique. I don't want to sheetrock around it and I could have the cabinet maker enclose it in wood with molding, etc. But then, I could do something really special....if you all have any ideas, please share them! Thanks :O)

Who was it that used an old chimney cap to make their hood? Someone who was venerable when I arrived a few years back, I think. Gorgeous idea. Also, somebody recently used an old chicken feeder (?) I believe, and made something similar to the ModernAire barrel hood. (Sorry, I'm lousy with names, but if you search the forum you might find -- )

I did plywood and tiled the bajeezus out of it; we love the tile, it's so easy to swipe clean.

Are you sure the hood isn't over the burners? Is the edge of the burner much more than 21" from the wall? My hood is 21", too, and only 19" if you subtract the part with the light in it. But the hobs in my induction cooktop only come out 19". When it's on, I can see the steam heading up and back into the baffles. 24" is better capture area, no doubt, but this may be just fine for you. If not, rentaltux's suggestion is good.

What is the cheapest way for me to get a barrel vent hood?

I don't know where to get one with a black finish, but I know two sources for barrel hoods with copper finish. One is Independent Hoods, their "Bonanza" hood in the copper (it also comes in stainless). Independent makes very good quality hoods. I'll link to one below, but I didn't do any price shopping - it was the first one that came up, so you may be able to find it for less. On that site the 36" Bonanza hood is $4541, plus the Independent blower (sold separately) is about $500. Not cheap, but a lot less than the $8000 you mentioned. You could try calling Independent Hoods directly. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy direct from the source. There is also custom hoods by Handcrafted Metal. They can make anything you want, but on their website they show a barrel hood on their stainless hoods tab, and on their copper hoods tab, a hood, not a barrel (kinda the opposite cause it's a concave curve instead of a convex barrel), but with the straps and rivets. Like I said, they'll make you whatever you want. But just to get an idea of cost, you can click on the photos; the copper concave hood looks like it'll cost about $3500 in the 36" size (includes the blower), and the straps and rivets cost more - the website shows a 52" hood where the straps and rivets are an additional $3300, so I'm guessing a 36" size the straps and rivets would add, I dunno, $2400? Still less expensive than Modernaire. Anyone with a vent-a-hood -venting out the wall and not up????

We have vent-a-hood model #PRH9 which is vented out through the wall (Our range is on the outside wall). I don't know what the "BV model" is, but an "8-inch elbow" had to be be special ordered from a local heating store (I think it cost about $30). The 'venting duct' goes straight up and then 'bends' to go out the wall. HTH (I'm not that technical, but proper venting was a BIG concern of mine with my kitchen remodel).

I don't know about your structural issues but I researched the range hood aspect of this for my remodel and this is what I found out. Don't get scared by these custom range hood people. You can get a hood insert and have a carpenter make a wooden frame in any shape you want. I have a joist in the way of where my vent should go. My vent will come out of the ceiling to the side of the center of the range hood. It will turn slightly to one side then, come straight down. My range hood cover will be shaped slightly wider at the top, narrow in the midddle, then wide at the bottom. The insert will be supported by a plywood box, made by a carpenter. It will be attached to the ceiling with metal bars that will be attached to the ceiling joists. The beautiful curvy shape of the range hood cover is only ornamental, not structural. The venting can follow any shape it need to within the range hood cover. Others on this site have made thier own range hood and got very creative with them. This might be an opportunity to make your hood distictive.

Thank you CP and Angie...I looked online tonight and copper is outrageously expensive, and a cover for the hood would cost as much as the granite! LOL...so I think tomorrow I will stop by a metalworks place and just for grins ask them about the price to fabricate a sheet metal hood cover with some character and maybe look at staining it to make it look like copper? I will search those ideas though...:o)

circuspeanut, you are thinking of my hood, made from an old feed bin. I dragged it out of the chickenhouse in a 'light-bulb' moment, when I realized I could convert it to a cheap copy of a ModernAire.

After scrubbing, sanding and painting to seal any flaking particles, I added scrap wood to complete the shape:

Covered with aluminum sheeting:

Installed in unfinished kitchen:
