Moving kitchen into living room, help?

We are moving our kitchen into our living room.

There, I said it.

My big question is this: what do I need to do about the sheetrock in the living room in regards to changing it into a kitchen? Behind the range does anything, like durarock, need to be installed? What am I missing here, or can I just set up shop in there and start cooking?

Short (version of the) story:

Right now the living room does not work (12' x 16' space with a fireplace and a door on one end, a window and the front door on the adjacent side, open on the other end, and plain on the other side). It is like a shotgun living room and we have never been able to come up with a layout that works.

OK, so the room sucks as a living room but it looks like it might make a good galley kitchen. More to come on that later, in a different post. Short: we have our new range, refrigerator, and freezer already and hope to get soapstone countertops and have not yet decided on a cabinet manufacturer. Moving the water and gas are super easy because we are moving the kitchen closer to the sources (not to mention the drain).
