kitchen cabinets for my budget

Please read what follows after this. In my choice for kitchen cabinets I want

sophisticated designs with some choices

semi custom

extras for organization but not overboard

Every company I see has something for me (at least most)

But I want a company that will stand behind me i.e. one that is reliable and around for years. My contracter uses Wellborn but I do not like the finishes in maple

Decora is pricey etc. I have heard such bad stuff about cabinets and I do not understand my 41 year old cabinets are knocked around etc. but they are not peeling scratching and all those horrible things I am hearing about. What is a person to do. Can one rec a company that is good for me: please do read below

I am so confused. I read reviews of cabinets and whoa everyone has something bad to say. Okay my kitchen rennovation is costing me 120K with an addition. My house at the market value now is 450K at its lowest. I do not have a mortgage and bought my house for 38K. Lived in it for 41 years. We also are senior citizens and will not stay here for years and years.

Hi,

As a result of using a cheap vanity in the first floor bath, when it was pressed into server for the temp kitchen, it gave its life for us.

Instead of getting one of the evil orange's in stock cabinets, we ordered one from American Woodmark. Opening the box this morning, I got the idea to take "unboxing" photos like the kids do because I know its difficult to understand what's ok and what's not.

I am not endorsing or dissing the evil orange or American Woodmark. Its more trying to document what you get when you buy some types of inexpensive cabinetry. American Woodmark isn't the worst thing I've ever seen. I've annotated the photos with some of what to look for that's a bad sign.

It's virtues are that its all plywood and thick enough plywood and the thermofoil finish is well done. I'd have to touch it to know it wasn't painted. It's failing is the joint construction stinks. It cost a bit over $300.

This will be a vanity with very low use and able to be tied into two walls. It will not disintegrate from small leaks. I'm not looking for 20 years of use. It was better than any of orange's in stock vanities. We could afford it and I need this to be over more than I need a vanity for the ages..

So, in those senses, it might beat its $900 competitor vanity. I'll let you know in five years.

Choosing who will make your cabinets may take you longer than any other single decision, and while it's frustrating not to be able to get a simple comparison chart of the top 5 brands, in the end you will have more confidence in your decision.

When you say sophisticated designs with some choices, what are you looking for? We lucked out because we looked at four or five semi-custom lines, and the one we liked the door style on the most was the most affordable.

Ours are made by Pacific Crest Industries, and the door style is Bellmont (their semicustom line) although the interiors of the cabinets are Amero (their lower price point line). We live in northern California, and the company is in Washington State. We have a nutmeg cherry finish that we like, and there were several other options.

Pacific Crest a family business, which is no guarantee in terms of the company's reliability, but they worked with us when we had damage to two cabinets that came in our main shipment. Many cabinet makers are only available in the region around them, and not nationally, which makes it hard to get information about them on the web. If you post a message like "looking for quality cabinets in Arizona" or Texas or whatever, you might get more specific suggestions.

There are people on these forums who will advise finding a local cabinetmaker to design and install custom cabinets. They claim it can be more affordable. It also should have the benefit that you can get exactly the door style that you want. We didn't look into it because I was worried about how long it would take to get the work done. My fear may have been unfounded, though!

You would not want a contractor to do this for you -- you'd want to find someone who does finish woodworking all the time, and can get you in to see some of their finished kitchens in customers' homes.

For the organization options, don't assume that you have to spec all that out before you order your cabinets -- it may be cheaper to order some things yourself. Check out Rev-a-Shelf. We put a lot of organization things into our drawers that would have cost at least twice as much if we had ordered them with our cabinets -- and they were *exactly* the same things. Trash pullout, knife drawer insert, bread drawer... spice racks, etc. Also, ask on here about specific needs, because there are a number of creative budget conscious people who share their ideas.

Finally -- welcome to the kitchen forum! Keep asking questions, and I guarantee you'll get plenty of help.

Noellabella, I click my car starter at my front door when I'm tired. At least it gives me a laugh at the end of the day! I wanted to tell you how fun and cheerful your kitchen looks. I've recently been bitten by the painting bug. Even to the point of taking my first day off for myself since I went to the dentist 8 months ago. I took an ASCP class and am excited. I've got over 150lf of cabinetry to paint, let alone some God-awful furniture that takes on new life after paint. Have fun with this and love it. Your kitchen is fabulous!

Awww, you are all so sweet. Lol laughable - dh now reads the paper at the TABLE! One of the deep drawers near the table is for newspaper recycling so the paper doesn't pile up. Beth - love love love the Super Susans. The shelves are not adjustable, but are very deep and they hold so much. I was surprised to find that the lid holder fit so well. The really big stockpot lids are on top of the pots to which they belong. It is nice to not have to dig for lids in a lower cabinet. The baking ss easily holds canisters with 10 lbs. of flour, 10 lbs. of sugar, brown sugar, xxx sugar, measuring spoons & cups, lots of bowls, etc. The bottom shelf of that one also holds serving trays, serving bowls, vases, and tons of other stuff. My cabinet maker had only done lazy Susans, but said he would try the ss. Dan is a true miracle worker and does beautiful work. He took a weird, old, uneven-walled kitchen and turned it into a miracle of storage. Other than a few 1/2" fillers, there is no wasted space. The toe kicks were built on site and everything was scribed to the walls. The finish is beautiful, durable yet soft looking. We almost went with Kraftmaid (it was a little cheaper) but to me it looked too shiny. I am soooo glad I asked raee who did her kitchen. I also was so lucky with Scott from Tuscarawas Valley Construction. He made our lumpy old plaster walls perfectly smooth and untangled a truly terrifying nest of electrical. We will be hiring him to build our deck once the finances are better. He is also the only person who has ever noticed that in our hall bathroom the toilet handle (chrome) does not match the other ORB fixtures. He is very detail oriented and a perfectionist. The soapstone fabricator was a bit of a disappointment. There a few minor uh-ohs with the soapstone, but we can live with it. The entire ordeal, from demo to kitchen sink install, took 4 1/2 weeks. Scott left the kitchen sink intact for the first week of that time. I had scheduled everyone so as to finish in 3 weeks, but the 4th of July and too much work coming in for the soapstone people interfered with the schedule.

@Beth, first thanks for all your tips and ideas on the hardware. Good idea to mark them out and good to know that 4" is the min (they sell 3 and 3.5, which are cheaper, so I wondered if that would work. thanks) I know; You had a lot of good ideas on painting. Thank you. I am still waffling on what to do. I guess my concerns w/ the painted floors are the effort to do it and the maintenance (I have wear patterns on my front porch and the kitchen gets more traffic). Plus I want to limit my exposure to chemicals. FWIW, this morning I emailed my house painter to check his schedule if I choose to have him repaint the cabs. (he's a much better painter than I am) Painting would allow me to fix the placement of the holes on some of the cabs (currently, most of the cabs do not have holes). I could also put a cab to the left of the stove. And I made an appt next week with the interior designer who was going to help me pick finish materials etc with the big remodel....to get his opinion of a scaled-down remodel. i.e. how to make this house a better version of what it is without spending a ton of money since I may move in a few years....thanks for all your help! I don't want this to be all about $$$, but everything is so $$$ and I hate the idea of investing a lot of excessive $ that I won't get when I sell. (when my former realtor came over this summer, she kept saying "do what *you* want; do what makes you happy; you don't need to do anything to fix this house to sell it" etc). So I guess my dilemma: what can make it more live-able for me for the next few years. (but possibly longer? who knows?)

FWIW we did our own kitchen remodel and used Ikea (Side Note: They do ship and the price can be reasonable depending on where you live!). We didn't want to spend a lot and we only needed to purchase 3 base, and 1 wall cabinets. I was weary of the quality but we are very handy and took steps to further strengthen and reinforce them, especially when building our custom island with them! The two biggest things we did to strengthen them was we (#1) constructed our own cabinet feet out of lumber and (#2) reinforced the back wall of the cabinet (it comes with thin/flimsy MDF type material) with thin plywood (we did this for the island only because the back side would be exposed, so we used cheap plywood to backfill the gap and then nice plywood for the finish). My 2 favorite cabinets from them is the 36" wide (two huge drawers!) where I keep all of my pots and pans, and more! I currently have several stainless pots and pans, a large heavy copper sauce pot, and a cast iron wok in the top drawer and in the bottom drawer I have a set of 3 pampered chef rectangle stoneware baking dishes, 3 Ikea ceramic baking dishes, and a couple more big stainless soup pots, plus all the lids to my pots and pans. I may be pushing its limits but after two years I'm still really happy with them. I may eventually reinforce the floor of these because I do have a LOT of weight on them and they're really long drawers. I also love the wall cabinet that actually sits on top of the counters. It has two glass doors where we keep glassware and plates, and two skinny/long drawers on the bottom where we keep our silverware. It gives a custom feel without the custom price. Really neat piece and everyone comments on it! Having said all of that, we know this isn't our "forever" home. We don't have kids, and take care of our things. Within the next 3-5 years we are looking to (potentially) build a custom home that will hopefully be our forever home (if not, at least long term) and we will not be using Ikea. Simply because I'm not sure how they'll hold up over time. I've only heard at how some renters can really trash a place so I'd be really weary of Ikea for your situation. Maaaaaybe consider it only if you're willing to do some extra work to reinforce their weak points. But even then, after watching my two brothers grow up, I'm not sure Ikea would've survived in my parent's house. I'm a bargain shopper, and you'd be surprised what comes up for sale on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace. Also (if you have the time) check out your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore (and the like). We used to live in a high cost of living area and we'd always find high quality antique furniture, grand fireplace surrounds, marble tops, and yes, nice cabinets! Of course it's always timing game. Have to be in the right place at the right time, but it might just be worth a call or a stop. If I were going to have a rental I'd probably start by looking at these places first.

Best advice I can give you is: Go Shopping.

Come up with a layout design that is as close as possible to a final design. Doesn't have to be FINAL final but should definitely include all bells & whistles you want.

Then go around and look at as many cabinet showrooms as you can. Look at as many brands as you can. And get estimates based on your design. Most places are willing to do this for free especially when you have your design done. Most KDs will be willing to comment on your design and give you advice on what they might change.

Seeing the cabinets yourself and having numbers to compare based on the same design is IMO the best way to decide which cabinets will work best for you. Looking at a lot of different brands and hearing different KDs' opinions and sales pitch is a great education to help you make a good decision.

The design might (and probably will) change in the end, and you can make adjustments to lower price if needed, or to incorporate other changes, but keeping the same design for the shopping process is a very good way to make a price comparison.
