Check out the American Bungalow site. They have a lot of discussion on redoing/renovating/restoring bungalows. They're historical, be them from a famous architect, a Sears kit, or whatever. 1915 is going to be a genuinely cool house!

I think your sales cabinet person is (an idiot) way off. "In" with your style home is completely different than someone creating a OTK. Then "in" happens more easily.

here's a picture. the entire kitchen cabinets are stuck in this little area. luckily before you get in there there is a big room where we can relocate the kitchen, however I want to keep the right side intact with the sink under the window but knock out the left side (relocating the butler cabinets to the bigger room). No I am not sure they are pine. I am so excited.

Lucky you! A great home I'm sure, and designing a new kitchen will be so much fun. I second the suggestion for American Bungalow site. Also search on houzz.com for "arts and crafts" or "craftsman" or "bungalow". You'll see many different variations. When we put a new kitchen in our last home, a 1916 A/C house, we chose quarter sawn oak, with SW fruitwood stain. White is also a great choice. What is the rest of the wood in your house, painted or stained?

Pay attention to the details: hardware, lighting, etc.

Please do post as you go. This is my favorite style, and I love to see others' interpretations!

Congratulations, you have a scullery!

Before you get serious about moving the cabinets, check their construction. Where modern cabinets are modular, with a separate box for each cabinet, old cabinets were often "stick-built." That is, the frame is all one big box and the cabinets are open to one another on the inside.

This style of construction makes the cabinets difficult to impossible to remove intact and relocate. I'm providing a link to an old thread on the subject.

seriously-I'd leave that section as is and enjoy it for what it is. probably take out the formica-get a soapstone counter with just a wee tiny sink in the same spot,with a faucet that is "period". Then this is your back storage...do a bigger functioning kitchen in front area.All I can say about taking apart old built on site cabs like that is "brittle" and/or "sticky"...don't do it. I started taking off some doors and had some surprises....the hardware becomes part of the piece-you start taking things apart and they don't go back together....then the cracks/chips start. Just leave it. Spend the efforts on your bigger space.

Why not post your full layout (both rooms, measured scale drawings and all that) and get some of the best free kitchen layout advice around?

I agree with restoring the little scullery as is. If you do decide to take those cabinets down, -- and you're restoring -- I'd have a professional assess them and then move them for you.

Is your home eligible for the historical register in Buffalo? AFTER you've done your upgrades?

Have you seen sayde's kitchen? It's gumwood. They used gumwood in Buffalo, too.

Her original cabs were built in place, something common then. No actual boxes, such as we have now. Pretty much impossible to move,you have to build boxes then reuse the doors, like sayde's DH did. Definitely have someone who knows these things check yours if you do try to move them. Personally, I'd leave those scullery cupboards as is.

If it's not gumwood - and new gumwood is hard to get, anyway - quartersawn oak would be perfect. Stickley is from right near you, after all.

wow you guys thanks for all the info. Yes I want to restore it as best as I can but the bottom cabinets are disgusting. They are not standard size, very shallow so would have to be custom built. For the uppers that I wanted to move, I was thinking about only reusing the doors and having the boxes built. Anyway, lots to think about. So you guys say leave the scullery? Interesting.

I am originally from Bflo and my entire family lives there. There are so many great houses in Bflo. They could be gumwood. My MIL's house has all doors and trim that looks like the the cabinet you posted. My grandmother's house that she had built in 1927 had a cabinet like that only upstairs in the hallway. She used it for linens. It always fascinated me. My Dad grew up in that house and he sold it 4 years ago to the neighbor and he did a complete gut and remodel then sold it. When I was home last time the new owners had put a huge 2 story addition on the back. Every time I drive by I keep hoping some one is out front so I can ask what they have done.

Well, enough about my story. Like a PP said I would leave that back area intact. It's part of the charm. Do keep us posted with pictures and your decisions.

Yes! Leave the scullery... Not that this is a democracy here so an additional vote won't matter. Would there have been an icebox in that scullery accessible from the outside? Could it once have been a pantry? Is that window original? Doesn't look so...Is there a door inside? Where does it go?

I would say the cabinets in the scullery are original and doubt there was an icebox. Also, don't think the window is original and no there is no door. It is quite cramped in there. But over the years something was done to that area as you can see the 1960s molding they put around the window and the opening. Well you guys have given me something to think about for sure. I was going to gut the left side so that I could put 30" cabinets on the right with a dishwasher, leaving the sink and the top cabinets on the right. In doing so we would be ruining the scullery by making it bigger making it part of the new kitchen??? Gosh I hate to ruin it. Regardless the bottom cabinets need to be replaced; they stink and are kinda soft they could be gumwood. The uppers appear to be some other kind of wood. Have a serious small budget however since we don't live in Buffalo - this is a second home. But there's no hurry. I will see if the Amish people can build some simple 24" cabinets to replace the bottoms. Maybe there's a way to get 24" cabinets at a reasonable cost? BTW the bigger room adjacent where we are going to put the appliances has so many window and door openings that it quite challenging to get many cabinets. A few around the stove and an island is about all we can do with it. I will post more pics and dimensions once we get back up there. Luckily for us, only the kitchen and bathroom require major work, the other rooms have been lived in quite lightly over the years. Amazing.

I've also recently purchased a shingle style Craftsman with similar woodwork and butlers pantry/scullery (in Portland, ME). It's a real treat to see another one with unadulterated woodwork -- also one of the biggest lures for us. (This weekend I am going to approach our trim carefully with some denatured alcohol and see how well the shellac cleans up after years of neglect.)

Is your butlers pantry/scullery original? I'd assume so, but it appears that the trim has been removed from the doorway or it's been enlarged or moved at some point?

We are planning to leave our scullery area largely unmodified, although we might have to fit in an undercabinet fridge due to lack of space in the larger outer kitchen. I think there is a real functional logic to keeping all the dishwashing in one place, while the cooking goes on elsewhere. In our house it opens onto both kitchen and dining room, so it may make more sense as a dirty dish dropoff area for us than for you; yours appears to be one enclosed U shape?

I'll be posting my layout soon and we can compare/contrast as we go along. Definitely post yours, with exact measurements, and the group kitchen brainiac of this forum will give you very valuable insights and inspiration.

Hello Upstate NY! We're in Rochester, and our first house was a 1905 four square beauty. I love old homes and you have such beautiful woodwork.
Not sure if you've heard of it, but there is a great place here in Rochester called Historic Houseparts on South Ave. It's a great place to go putter around, and they do have architectural salvage and great old home parts- furniture, cabinets, everything down to glass knobs. They also have sources for new "old" pieces.
If nothing else, I found the folks there to be very knowledgeable about restoration and different types of resources. They were very helpful when we restored the original front door to our house (needed help finding a finish carpenter).

Even as a 2nd home, it can be a beauty. Since it is 2nd, nothing should need to be done NOW. That offers you the freedom to focus on one thing at a time, do it right, and make it shine.

But .. Buffalo? a 2nd home? Where I'm from (mid Michigan) one goes south for a 2nd home. Usually, anyway. There are those nut cases that go north, but usually just for summer living on the lakes. It's colder than a well digger's butt in Buffalo's winters. I hope you've got beautifully tiled and trimmed fire places!

I grew up in Buffalo and have family there, actually 3 streets away from this house. We live full time in Florida and it is bloody hot here in the summer. The summers in Buffalo are BEAUTIFUL. So that's the plan! Fireplace is non-working, someday we will have it looked at. Here is a pic. Pretty plain. Underneath that blocked off opening is an antique looking insert. The home inspector found it. :-)

Here's an article about a lady who built a scullery. I wouldn't relocate the sink but what do you think of the shelves instead of bottom cabinets?

OK, Just have to defend Buffalo weather. First its not that cold. Maybe in January we might have a few 6 degree days. Lake Erie keeps us fairly warm. Snow, not even close to what some people think. Many years the winter carnival in the city is cancelled or they have to make snow. We get just enough to keep the skiers and snowmobilers happy and that usually south of the city. This past winter was very warm. Hardly any snow. The skiers hated it.

Spring, summer, and fall are the best. Air conditioning is not mandatory. Can't explain it all you just have to come here.

No earthquakes(only the kind most people don't even feel), no hurricanes, no tornados (rare and minor), no excessive heat, no mud slides, no forest fires, no excessive cold, no major amounts of snow, etc...

Plus the architecture is to die for. Donna have you ever been on the Parkside home tour? or one of the other home tours? I'm sure you could get many ideas.
