Try using adhesive mounting squares. They are made for hanging everything from poster weight to heavy mirrors. They are removable. They work.

You don't want to hang on hooks with the chalkboard flapping around every time you open the door. You want it solid.

Blick Art Materials sells flexible magnetic sheeting that can be ordered by the foot (with a 24" or 12" width). It's the really strong durable stuff that you can use to make big signs on your car.

You can paint it with chalkboard paint and the paint shouldn't crack, and then frame the sheet. Another option would be to make a lightweight chalk board (foam core board and 2 coats of chalkboard paint.) or buy one, frame it and attach the magnetic sheeting to the back. I think they also sell magnetic strips by the foot as well.

Someone had suggested adhesive things on the thread where this originated but I wasn't sure about the weight thing. I can't imagine a small one would weight more than 3-5 lbs.

Do they have different ones for different weights? Doesn't look like it says there. I'll dig around. Just get an ordinary chalkboard of my liking and slap these on the back.

I used magnetic strips sold in rolls and ran them along the back of frame, full length of each . No flopping and has been hanging on for 5 years. Some magnetic strips are better than others, check at an auto store rather than hobby options.

I missed the previous conversation, but are you doing this solely to hide the mass of white? The high contrast between the white background and the black board draw the eye in that direction - the opposite of what you are trying to do.

It's a refrigerator in the kitchen. As long as it's clean and doesn't have magnets and other stuff on it, your eyes dismiss it because it is expected.

I have a framed bulletin board on my fridge to hang all of the kids schedules and school notices. I have heavy duty magnets on the back of it and it does NOT MOVE. I don't remember where I got them but probably Hobby Lobby or a home improvement store.

Roobear - We must have posted at the same time yesterday because I missed yours! Thanks, they're good ideas. I was wondering if I framed just the sheet if it would look funny since the sheet is thin? I think that was the site (or similar to the one I ran across the other day) If I were only going with 12" wide the best bet would be do the foam core board thing and glue that to the back and frame around the front. I'll have to check out the size again on the refrigerator.

Graywings - Yeah, this was an idea to break up the white. To my eye, with or without the chalkboard, the refrigerator pokes out there bad. I really can't stand visually how the refrigerator looks. (It's great for the intended purpose!) I know it sure doesn't help that it's not on the end.

Emagineer and Joanie - A light bulb finally went on to call the Ace Hardware store! Turns out they do have different magnetic strips in 1/2", 1", and 1 1/2" widths. Prices range from $1.29 - $7.49 so I don't know how strong they would be? They might be the same magnetic strength (she said it didn't say) but the price difference being because of the sizes? I would think if I slap them the whole way around it should be good. ?

I'd honestly rather just buy a chalkboard and attach something to the back then mess with making one because then I have to go buy the trim and I don't have a truck yadda ya. I think I'll try this option first. How much do chalkboards weigh?

BUT - Joanie I just saw you said framed bulletin board. I have left over fabric from my stools/valance as well as the solid gold with red dot chair fabric (other side of the room) left over. Maybe I should just make one of those fabric memo boards? I could use that foam core board stuff?

Thoughts on this or the chalkboard? Ha, maybe I should just leave it alone.

The memo board is probably more practical. I do love pictures and I'm sure when we have kids I'll have a hard time not having them everywhere.

Honestly I think you should think about function before beauty. If you are wanting to write things down, menu, shopping list, appts. ect, then maybe you should do the chalkboard. But I think it can get really messy and sloppy looking with faded chalk if you don't plan to clean it well and often. I like having my bulletin board because I have so many sports schedules and reminder notices that I truly need to have directly in front of my face or I cannot keep track of things. I agree that keeping it clean of everything would be the most clutter free approach, but I can see why you want to break up the white. If you DO NOT need to post things for yourself, maybe a pretty calendar or framed art with magnets on the back will do the trick. But if you need reminders, I think something to catch it all would work better than having individual magnets all over the fridge. JMO

We have a 20 year old refrigerator (top) freezer (bottom). As I mentioned previously. I painted both doors (only) with a rich tan oil gloss paint, leaving the sides, top, etc. white (this was back from when only refrigerator doors were pebble-textured...the rest still smooth).

I also bought several colorful posters, about 27 x 22 & had them professionally laminated & magnetic tape placed around the backside edges. Cost maybe about $20 total, not including the posters.

This of course works best with a bottom freezer refrigerator & of course wouldn't work the same with stainless. I change off my refrigerator artwork every so often.

There's some really interesting B&W and colored posters out there. One of my "posters" is a vintage laminated black & white cities street map, showing the SF-Bay Area circa 1936 before the Bay Bridge was built. Another is a blown up cover of The Ladies Home Journal from December 1941 showing a sophisticated lady skiier of the day (I have the original magazine as I collect that kind of stuff). The others I purchased on-line. May buy a few more.

Personally I think this would be a more interesting alternative to a chalkboard, since there are so many food or kitchen oriented posters available now.

I vote chalk board. Function-wise, I don't think you really need a bulletin board (though I have one in my Laundry Room where most pics, etc. are), no kids here and we use sticky notes and one side of fridge for magnets, etc. (guessing you use the left side for a few like that). I think a chalkboard would be more functional. I think the black, coupled with a little chalk, and a frame similar to your cabs will blend into your space and not call attention to itself. I think fabric or artwork would draw my eye. But if you go with fabric, I'd say the stools/valance fabric, the gold would scream on that fridge.
