I forgot to mention that this soffit box was built out of the same cherry wood with the same crown molding as the cabinets.

What about stopping the backsplash at the bottom of the hood and just painting above the hood? Check on FKB...upon a short browse I saw examples of all three solutions. I think you can do any of those...just depends on what you want.

I vote for tiling up to the base of the hood, although this kitchen's cabinets don't go to the ceiling...

I don't know if this would work with your tile choice but maybe you could do a stepped or pyramid-like pattern on the edge? kind of like this...

Nishka, I'm having the same problem. My ceilings are 9ft and my cabinets are 42 inches. My first thought was to tile up to the top of the cabinets and just paint anything above that to match the kitchen. I also thought about staggering the cabinet heights surrounding the hood or changing the molding on them, to make them a little higher. I will be anxiously waiting to see what you come up with!

i agree with tiling up to the range hood and up to the bottom of the upper cabs and painting everything above it. i have 42" cabs with 9' ceiling and had the stock piece/filler piece plus crown to make them extend to the ceiling. it's a viable alternative for you too as long as you can get it matched exactly to the cabs.

Okay, here is what I am up against. My husband really wants the back splash to extend up to the ceiling. I showed him pictures of beekeeperswife's kitchen where the backsplash stopped just a few inches short of the base of the hood and the wall was painted just above the backsplash and under the hood.

This is a great trick that ties in the painted area to the area under the hood as well.

Another option that we both like is adding an arched panel with crown at the top leaving the bottom open rather than an soffit type box. Instead of stopping at the top of the cabinets, extend a few inches down between the cabinets to allow the tile to disappear and go up the wall to meet the ceiling behind it.

I am thinking a panel like the arched panels in these pics without the cabinets above it, mounting flush against the ceiling with crown on the top.

It could also be an after thought design element tying in the archs from our windows and doorway into the cabinet area.

Neverdifficult - We are really second guessing ourselves for not adding that little extra to extend the cabinet heights. It's not like we can't add it now but we like the continious crown molding around the room and adding something like this arched panel might dress up that stainless hood which was my husband's "absolutely gotta have" piece.

I had the same dilemma, and ultimately decided to go a little above the bottom of the cabinets on the sides of that hood wall, and all the way up to the ceiling under the hood. It works for us because we only have the two wall cabs there, so we could go to the floor on the sides and trim out the top of the tile as a kind of faux wainscotting.

Not the best pic (our hood is being replaced), but maybe this helps? I could see doing this in your situation because of the empty wall on the left of your wall cabs?
