Setting Up a Temporary Kitchen- Help Please
Comments (2)All I needed was my sink, appliances (dishwasher mandatory lol) and a couple of tables for flat space. Use temporary plywood on your counters if you're able to. I never set up a temp kitchen. We are working in half a kitchen right now. I have my sink and a small counter space next to it as well as my cooktop and wall oven still installed. I'm using one of my dishdrawers temporarily installed and I have a large (read takes up too much space) table on wheels for my flat, prep space. After DH finishes the new half, he'll rip out the old half. At that time I'll have to live without an oven ;-( Good thing I'm in So Cal so I can BBQ stuff lol...See MoreKitchen Demolition TOMORROW!! Any last advice re: temp set-up?
Comments (17)We just had demolition recently & kitchen reno work actually started today, so I know what you are feeling. Our kitchen was actually similar to yours -- minus the island (not wide enough). Temp kitchen advice: keep extension cords & multi-outlet power strips handy -- where you can find them if you suddenly realize you need them. I had one wall in our study (next to kitchen) with a long table where I set up our temp kitchen. But in demo (relocating position of laundry room door), some wiring had to be cut, which shut off power to the side of the room with our temporary kitchen. We moved the table across the room, moved all appliances (microwave, Breville Smart Oven, Cuisinart griddler, toaster, coffeemaker). So, today, the electrician is here -- and guess what? -- cut the power to the side of the room we moved everything to! Eventually, we can move the table back to the original position, but have two large armoire-type cabinets in the way (all wood floors downstairs were replaced with new wood last week), plus my husband is at work. I'm staying home to "supervise." I found a lot of good frozen meals at Trader Joe's if you have one nearby. It should only take a couple of weeks more for us to have the kitchen functional (cabinets next week, granite the week after), but I plan to do some outdoor grilling, too. If our temp kitchen had to be used longer, I would probably look into a hot plate, but I think we'll be OK without one. I'm going to try Boca burgers on the Griddler tonight, I think (haven't used it much previously except for Panini & grilled cheese). Stay flexible and optimistic. Everything will work out, and you'll have a beautiful new kitchen before you know it....See Moredepression during renovation
Comments (96)((((iyanini14)))). I feel for you and wish you luck. Some years ago we were building a home and had to run off our builder... fired him. Finished it ourselves hiring our own subs and learning along the way at 1/2 complete. Never again. Uhg. Hmmm. After well over a year since I started packing and we moved all furniture out, 8 months with a temporary kitchen, 6 months now with no kitchen, and living with no furniture except the bedroom, no flooring (Much is DIY)... we are finally seeing the light.. or I should say a glimmer! Flooring is in (and covered with Ram Board, which was a bummer as we loved looking at something complete!). The cabinet maker said they'd start putting cabinets in soon as we finished painting and installing our baseboard (week after next I hope!), but then we've got the vent to install and vent cabinet, a pass-through window to finish, and the glass people (for the cabs) are special ordering, so that's a while away. Still, we have much electrical, plumbing, and purchases to do. I'm still hoping for June. Ha! I hate all the purchases! First you have to figure out what you want, then you have to pay for it! Good heavens, I see now why faucets and pulls are called "kitchen jewelry"! My sanity has been pretty good despite set-backs. The two things I love are cooking and gardening. Without a kitchen, no cooking, but we simultaneously started working on our landscaping (older 20 year old home, dire need for re-do everywhere). While the yard has put us behind, I love working outside : ) All is good here, but it's just rush-rush, exhaustion, soreness!...See MoreAttn: Username: buehl/Just want to bounce my plan off all of you guys!
Comments (21)You mean it'll be a pony wall at the R end of the FP? The prep sink would work there on the kit side. From Sena's LO there'd be about 4' of prep space between it and the stove. I'd still use a shallow pantry on the wall of the laundry room at the end. (that'd also eliminate the deep lower corner cabinet area problem) I'd put in an EZreach upper cab on that corner to butt up to the shallow pantry. uppers usually run about 15" deep, don't they? I'd want a long area of prep space on the other side too instead of a deep pantry. Having the window side not so deep by the door and shallow on the stove side would make it more open at the doorway. Easier to see little ones coming in too. Having a prep area on both sides would be great when you have help in the kitchen by family/friends. On the window side, how about the fridge next to the dw? You could even move the sink/dw to the L maybe another foot - that'd give maybe 3' or so to the R of the fridge for the desk area. (before the doorway to the sunroom) Try putting this in the layout/or 3d pic and post here so we can see how it looks. I like the idea of the 6' between counters when a number of people will be working in that area - and possibly someone going out or coming in that laundry area door. Less congestion. The wall ovens - those are good for those who have problems bending down to the oven on a stove. Really tall people, those with a bad back... or those who often use oven and stove top at the same time. Many don't like standing at the stove top with the heat of the oven so close to them. I'd love to have one but I so seldom use the oven, it doesn't seem worth it for me. I probably don't use the oven 2x a month. Maybe once a month. btw, I tried bolding my '2x a month' above and it did. I didn't hit submit tho, so maybe it would bonk me if I did that. Or maybe it is the phone or just when editing a post? I'm gonna go ahead and click on submit so we'll know. Saving my post first tho......See MoreRealHousewifeofNJ
