Thank you for all the input. It definitely makes sense to use wood to simplify emptying the DW. We tend to rush through the chore sometimes, too. I think we can happily forgo glass shelves. I was thinking of skipping the lights inside. I looked up some threads on this and it doesn't seem to be too big of a deal. I'm not sure how much we'd really use them. When I redid my kitchen, I chose 4 glass-front cabinets with muntins. After living with them a few months, I couldn't stand them. I replaced them for clear glass with bevelling around the edges. It drove me crazy that the muntins/mullions and the interior shelves didn't line up, depending upon what angle you were looking at the cabinets. I just didn't like the look. My kitchen is "transitional", neither traditional nor contemporary, but a little of both. Changing out the doors was a surprisingly easy switch. The new doors from my cabinet company weren't too expensive (the bigger expense of cabinetry is the boxes), and I bought the clear bevelled glass from my neighborhood glass/mirror shop. I brought the glass/mirror shop my 4 new cabinet doors, and they installed the glass. I chose the bevelled glass because it really adds a luxury look to the glass - it ought to, since bevelling the glass almost doubled the price of the glass. I really like them now, and display my "good" china and wine glasses in those cabinets.

buehl, didn't know I had to turn the wooden shelves over. Crap, that's going to be a lot of work- every shelf - every year!?! I will have glass shelves in my garden windows, alcove, and was planning on putting them in the cabinet over my microwave- so that won't be such a huge task. Is it only for shelves that have heavy loads on them? What about pullouts? You can't flip those over cuz they have sides. No one flips over drawers... Has anyone else ever heard of this? I will be having two cupboards with glass inserts- one 42" and one 30". Both will be for dishes, glasses, and mugs. Good excuse to get some new 'accessories' that'll look perty, and maybe give me incentive not to get too cluttery. I have bevelled glass in mullions in a corner cupboard in my dining room and I love that look. I store my good china and glasses and vases in that cupboard. My longterm plan is to replace the plain glass (which I don't even have yet) in my kitchen cupboards with custom made leaded glass with bevels. There are a number of sellers on eBay who seem to make some fairly reasonably prices stained glass panels.

Thanks, sj! Our plan was to add a towel bar/large appliance pull to the island to hang out towels but I'm so reluctant to put holes in our cabs. I stuck up 2 of the 3M hooks to try it out and see whether it works before permanently mounting something. I bought a whole bunch of new towels, white with a thin blue stripe for dishes, multi-striped for hands, and yet DH and DS2 are still using the wrong towel. I find it disgusting when they wipe a clean dish with a towel that was just used to wipe raw egg off fingers. Sigh. Anyhoo, I am trying to figure out what method will work best for us. Thanks for your help.
