White Statutory Marble for Kitchen Countertops?

I am considering using white statutory marble kitchen countertops because I like the pure white and I love the statutory's black/gray veining. Is statutory an OK type of white marble to use? I see most info is about calcutta or carrera and I haven't been able to find a slab of those that has the veining and color that I am most partial to. Also, is polished OK...most info seems to refer to honed? Many, many thanks for your feedback. Chris

Watch your spelling; you are talking about statuary marble; i.e.: suitable for statues, not statutory; i.e: pertaining to legal statutes. As used in the sentence "You haven't ever been convicted of statutory r#@e.
AFAIK, statuary is more costly than carrara.

Bingo -- a) spelling (and there are so many misspellings here that you have to be creative in your searches: Calacatta, Calcutta, Carrara, Carrera, etc. and b) Statuary tends to be (much) more expensive than Calacatta and / or Carrara. (tends to, but isn't necessarily: see the two types of marble I mention below which were both [significantly] more than Statuary)

But it's funny, because I wanted a white marble with large grey movement (as opposed to the tight business of a Carrara) so I'd thought I would be getting Statuary but then I found my dream marble in Calacatta Extra. Mindimoo also found her dream marble as Calacatta Carrara (or is it Carrara Calacatta?).

Anyway, Statuary is a fine marble for kitchens and it has the same pros and cons of the other white marbles, so long as you're okay with those ... then you should be fine with Statuary.

Good luck! Those of us who love our marble kitchens really love our marble. It's an itch which has got to be scratched!

My husband and I are renovating our kitchen. I have always loved the look of marrying the modern and the vintage. When we undertook this project I had a vision of using white marble (the old) and very contemporary elements (the new). We have espresso colored shaker cabinets, a 4 x 12 glass subway tile backsplash and professional series stainless appliances. When we told our friends/family/contractors/etc. they thought we were crazy to use marble. We were told, time and time again, that it would scratch, dent, chip, etch, stain... Our confidants had essentially succeeded in swashing our hopes of using this material. We were told to check out Quartzite and Soapstone and Corian and white Granites, as they were more durable. After searching through all of these options and not being excited about any of them, I started to get really discouraged. That night, my husband and I walked into a bar and noticed that they had the most gorgeous white marble counter at the bar. It as original to the structure (built in 1920). It had very few scratches but had developed a slight patina. At that moment we said, forget what everyone says! We are going with marble! We looked at, and LOVED, the Calacatta Gold. Unfortunately, with 100 feet of counter space that type was WAY out of our price range (25k+ was the bid). So we settled on honed Arrabescato Danby. It will have a double laminated edge to give it the look of being a "big block" of marble. Now, I have two questions.... 1.) What is the best Sealant to use? 2.) What should I use on the floor? (I have thought about mirroring the subway tile with 12x18 marble tiles. We have dark hardwood floors through the rest of the house) Thanks for all of the great advice!

Haven't seen your layout, but the peninsula with seating sounds like a nice place for that dark wood, but that doesn't mean you have to have it all dark wood. I love the look of black counters with white cabinets too, but like you, I wasn't sure that was what I wanted. I looked for soapstone, but I couldn't find slabs that were right for my kitchen. I considered a couple of grey granites, but the one I liked best (very soft, not too speckly and had little blue inclusions) stained badly. I sealed it some more -- still stained after a number of coats of penetrating sealer. That killed that idea. And that left me facing marble when I was hearing mostly not to use marble in a kitchen and before so many folks here had done it. I did find some experience here though, and the guy my KD suggested for our counters began his stone work in Europe and said he fell in love with stone over there. He told me about the beautiful, well-used and well-loved counters a chef friend of his had in his apartment. He said even the stains were beautiful, but I did seal mine. ;-) Having stone people who are comfortable with marble makes a difference. The voices of those who had experience with marble here helped too, but I felt a lot better having the work done by someone who knew and loved marble too. the guy who actually installed it was buffing out an uneven spot in the honing that showed up when it came in and was laid in front of the window. He handed me the sandpaper and let me get a feel for it. That did a lot to ease my fears -- the rest just came with living with it for a while. I love the marble and can't imagine not making that choice now. My island has a Cambrian black granite top though -- I didn't go 100% marble.

In the course of my kitchen reno drama I have become a bit of a white countertop expert. Take a look at Caesarstone (www.caesarstoneus.com) also a man made quartz like Silestone. They have a nice selection of whites - many used in more modern schemes - you will see photos on their website. Blizzard or Pure White might be of interest to you. Ikea also sells Caesarstone but you have to use their fabricator to install and that could be a risky endeavor - guess it depends who you get - I would not chance it myself. Soapstone is always dark. There are some beautiful white granites - I have seen some that have wonderful veining similar to marble. Granite is harder than marble so easier to maintain. Marble is lovely - looks so great in those kitchen photos - but porous and easily stained and etched. This board is full of renovators who love marble but either canÃ¢ÂÂt get up the nerve to make the plunge because of all the scary stories they have heard or (like me) have spouses who donÃ¢ÂÂt want to hear us sob hysterically when the first stain appears. From the description of the period of your home, IÃ¢ÂÂm not sure marble is the best fit - but you just have to hit the kitchen stores and slab places to see what you like. Also $ is a factor. Marble is not that expensive - at least here in Southern California. Good luck!

Yes, I meant Statuary! :-0 Guess everyone got a laugh out of that! :-) Anyway, thanks so much rmkitchen for your information and encouragement..I'm very pleased to hear your positive opinion for Statuary. Maybe it's fortunate I haven't seen the Calacatta Extra or Calacatta Carrara! i love my honed statuary white countertop. been using my new kitchen for a month now. cooking oil disappears without a trace after wiping with soapy sponge or microfiber cloth. but water does leave a faint mark on the marble.

you should go out and view as much marble as you can find. after searching for over a YEAR i have found my slabs. the fabricator had them brought in just for me since he knew i would want them. he told me nothing about them except i would love them. as soon as i walked into the yard i saw them and started screaming ...i was so excited! but i thought immediately, "forget it. i can't afford them." i THOUGHT it was statuary. to my surprise the slabs are actually calacutta gold. unbelievable! they look nothing like other slabs of calacutta i've seen. don't settle on a type. find YOUR slabs. GL!

hi chris,
be sure to pick your slab. there is so much variation with marble. in the first bathroom i did I chose carrera (but didn't choose the slab.. this was years ago before I became so TKO (or TBO as it were). in the second bathroom renovation, i was much more particular and went with Thassos marble, which I adore (but which does not have the veining it sounds like you are looking for, BUT which does have the most mesmerizing glints of crystals and shimmering sparkles... I just LOVE it).

anyway, ear mark your slab before proceeding. the carrera i ended up with in my bathroom is pretty bad. it must have been saved for those without a care which is what i would have been classified as, at that time.
