How much did your kitchen cabinets cost? + pics!

How much did everyone pay for their kitchen cabinets?

We are looking at custom and RTA, like Scherr's. I have seen people sing the praises of Scherr's but the only price I have seen was "$17,000", which for my small kitchen sounds a tad high.

I went the KraftMaid route and paid about $325 average per cabinet.

Total was $3,100 delivered for a very small kitchen, 4 wall and 5 base cabs in oak and 2 white thermofoil beadboard for island.

I'm sure you can spend 2 to 5 times that for fancier wood and finishes. Wall cabs are the least expensive, big base cabs with a lot of drawers are the most, and glass inserts are the real budget buster ($150 additional and up per cabinet).

My kitchen was $6000 for the cabinets. He did give me a little bit of a price break, but he normally charges $125 per liner foot each for uppers and lowers (so $250 per foot if you have uppers and lowers). They are custom, solid oak fronts and 3/4" oak plywood for the boxes. The back of the boxes are 1/4". They came with crown and light rails and have Blume Metabox drawers. I have the little pull out spice drawers next to the cook top base and matching columns on the sink base, although the ones by the sink don't pull out.

"Not necessarily. For example, sitework can often run over if you are building a basement and don't know what you will find." Very true. We built a walk out basement (in the front of the house) into a hill. We had lived on the hill for 15 years before deciding to build 'the' house. They ended up having to go 10 ft below basement level to find solid ground, then had to fill and pack. Then the county decided our 'zoning' was incorrect and required us to build to '1 hour fire' specs which included a residential fire system, tempered glass everywhere, no open decking, double sheet-rock, etc... Then when I went to pay for the 'septic authorization' (county allowing us to use our existing septic system), they said they screwed up and we weren't in a secondary fire zone and our zoning was rural residential so we didn't need to do all the fire mitigation construction. We had the plans re-done to reflect all the fire requirements which we didn't need. The county clerk actually called my wife to apologize but they didn't send me a check for all the extra $$ I had spent prior to them 're-zoning' me for the 2nd time. We ended up @ about 30% over budget for a build that was supposed to be 120 days but went 375. We knew we were into it big-time so just did what ever we wanted and budget be damned. Our builder tried to recoup all of his over-runs also (kind of shadily), we only paid him for the ones we signed off on and parted ways on less than friendly terms.

It seems a bunch of us are shopping for backsplashes. thedork: It is good to have allowances called out, because they are so highly variable. You don't need to negotiate the allowance, you will simply have to pay for the variance. But it is important when comparing bids to know the differences in the major allowances. The allowance is at the low end, but it is easy to get carried away with a lot of tile options. A subway tile, 4x4 or 6x6 from a major manufacturer can run you as little as $3 to $5. You can even get colors and bevels at that price. But the prices that people here are citing are very common as well -- it depends on your budget and what style you are seeking. Trim pieces, btw, will add to your total costs and they tend to be expensive. kgolby: glad you found your tile!

How much did your remodel or renovation cost?

We did a gut and remodel of our entire house for around $65,000. A LOT of DIY with some hiring out. Our house isn't very big, the dreaded 1970 era raised ranch with about 1100 square feet on the top and 1100 on the bottom. Our garage is attached but to the back of the house. The kitchen cost us about $11,000 in materials (not including appliances.) Our plumbing is all new, electrical mostly new, we kept some drywall, and the hardwood floors upstairs we saved but had them refinished. New roof, windows, doors, trim, etc. I didn't want to go over $75,000 for the whole job and we still have to do a driveway and landscaping which will definitely push us over a bit. I think the things that saved us the most money is DH is very handy and imaginative so we were able to use his skills in places that could have cost us a lot more and two was our ability to shop around for materials. For almost everything we bought from light fixtures, to cabinets, to appliances I shopped around until I found I was getting a good value. Whenever you are remodeling there are so many wants that can push the budget up. You have to step back and splurge on the ones that are really important to you and try and cut back on things that are less important.. Did anyone look at the chart from live wire? I am sorry but I can't believe some (not all) of the prices. I checked Chicago and it says a mid range master suite addition is $127,000. Upscale was $257,000. I would love to know what that includes.

For common granites, prefabs are best. ubatubas, pearls. We recently purchased an 3' x 7' island made of kashmir white for $250. All edges bullnosed. In Los Angeles, this is what i found after shopping at dozens of stone yards. Cost of slab (buy whole slab): Common granites - uba tuba, pearls - $10-$15 per sq ft Middle level - volga blue, labarodorite etc $20-$30 per sw ft Blue/Green granites - Start at $40 per sq ft Templating+Fabrication+Installation is $25-$30 per sq ft. So lets say you want to do 50 sq ft of volga blue Total = ($20 + $25) * 50 = $45 * 50 = $2250

I was lucky enough to get mine through an employee discount at Kraftmaid. I paid less than $6000 for mine and they were over $25000 retail. I don't have an exact pic of mine as we are installing, but I picked durango natural hickory cabinets. I got 23 cabinets with all the bells and whistles. Door/racks, pull outs, spice drawers, pot and pan drawers, trash bins. I am in love with them and very happy with the product. I will post my own picks when complete, but I did add link. Nothing had to be replaced or repaired and the customer service was excellent through Kraftmaid. I have read horror stories about people having to go through their retail supplier due to problems, but dealing directly with Kraftmaid was a pleasure.
