I personally think large tiles tend to overwhelm the backslash and just doesn't look right. However I would not hesitate to cut those tiles into 4" or 6" squares or rectangles and use them.

well, using a 24" square tile will basically mean that you'll only have vertical grout lines on most of your backsplash.

it could be interesting. i think the size of the tile coupled with the finish will give kind of a modern, almost futuristic look. sounds like your pennyround tiles will offer a very nice color and texture contrast.

i think it'll end up looking similar to what it'd look like if you used a solid surface like a stone slab or stainless, especially if you set the tiles fairly close together and go with a grout color similar to the tile color.

It would be great if you see in person, what it looks like with just vertical lines. I think the tile is going to give you a really neat surface, not sure of the effect of having it on both counter and backsplash.

I have a question though, which the fellow at the tile shop couldn't answer for me. When you use 24" tiles for a counter, how do you account for the overhang over the base cabinets? Do you not have an overhang- or else you'd have to have a very narrow strip of tile on the counter which defeats the purpose of the large 24" tile. Just wondering...

I can't offer an opinion about using 24" tiles as a backsplash but I plan to use 24" tiles on my counter as well. However, tell me about your tile. It is beautiful. Who makes it etc?

This has been also a dilemma for me: the overhang question with the 24" tiles. I have researched this quite a bit. Maybe should post this on a separate thread but for now here is a run down:
There are few options:
1) Going for ultra modern look and stop at the cabinet depth (this should be OK only if the total depth of the cabinets stops at 24" - Otherwise would look weird with doors and drawer faces protruding beyond the counter edge).
2) Finishing the edge with a trim piece: Either similar to the material of your cabinetry to give it some consistency or use a metal edging (there is a cool company names schluter-systems (www.schluter.com) that offers such solutions especially designed for tiled counters)
3) Running a small strip of the tile in the back  Can be the tile itself, OR a completely different tile, likely the same as the backsplash. Thinking in the line of 1" mosaics that continues onto the backsplash. Can do lots of things here just requires a bit of creativity.

The tile is called Steelwork, color Argento (it comes also in a bronze/copperish and a darker/black tone). The manufacturing company was difficult to figure out  as most suppliers wonÂt tell you their sources. But it is called "Fioranese" I think.

I think it's a great idea. I've been looking for 5x10 or 6x12 subways because I don't like the look of small tiles (most of the time). It's all those grout lines that end up being an element of design whether you want them to or not.

We used 18x18 marble tiles that were "officially" floor tiles. We love how it looks, which is not to say that small tiles don't look fantastic. You can see ours in the link below.

I usually try to avoid the using the floor tiles on a vertical surface.

I do think it could work in this case if you cut them into 3" x 12" strips and did a running bond (brick) pattern, or better yet, cut them into a few different widths and did a more random pattern. See the attached link for something similar.

Cutting the tiles in smaller pieces is not a bad idea if I ultimately decide to stay with this tile, but not have large pieces on the backsplash. Not sure how much more installation work this involves... but I am not there yet, since I really am still interested in the kind of look I would get with large tiles.

Larrylwill - nice job with Photoshop :), thanks! It does help. Makes me think I should consider the grout colors and lines... I am hopping for a minimal grout line with a color really close to the tile

Mayland - that marble is gorgeous! And it works so well in your kitchen. The seams are really not obvious, but still give a nice effect up close. Well done...

We have a 20 x 20 inch tile on the floor. We used the same tile in a 12 x 12 inch size for the backsplash. It was put on a diagonal. Some pieces are full tiles and some are cut in half. My tile is a porcelain stone-look and it is very thick. The installer suggested this backsplash for us.
Ignore the dusty floor, the tile was just done and not cleaned up yet.

We decided to take the plunge and go for it. Off tomorrow to get epoxy grout for the countertop and back splash. The GC is putting cabinets up and is a little less than half way done, and assured me tile installation will be finished by next week. So I'll be back with pictures to show you how it all went...
