do you have a HD or Lowe's near you? I know HD has bathroom cabinets. you could fit 2 sinks in there w/ doors underneath and drawers down the center of it. they have medicine cabinets that match - with wood trim if that's what you want. they also have one that would go over the toilet I think. (will look in my book later and post). they also have a 6" deep cabinet that would fit between the sinks if you'd want that. it's about 12" wide and 30" tall. I'd set it up a bit higher - like on an extra piece of silestone (or whatever you use) to keep water from harming the bottom of it. wouldn't be good with kids around tho. laminate would be good in there also. Formica and Wilsonart both have some nice laminates (I've been checking those out for wks now). I'd like silestone myself but not sure I want to put the money into it! HD also has solid surface counter tops with sinks as part of it. You'd have to pre-order it to fit the cabinets you get tho. I think they're probably a reasonable price compared to something like silestone plus sinks as separates. they also have sheet vinyl that you float. no gluing down. let's see... earthscapes ? makes some - so does- well, it'd dupont or congoleum i think... that's what I'm thinking of putting down. I can't tolerate the glue smell. check one of those big surplus flooring stores for a remnant - your bath isn't very big. yrs ago I did that and got a great piece of vinyl for half of the bath (toilet/ tub area) for 50.00! a mid range price is about 3.00 or so per sq ft for sheet vinyl. HD sells it also. (I'm sure Lowe's does too, I just haven't been there yet to check it out). put in a fan/lite and new light over vanity and you'll be about set! the closet - how about cabinet type doors? or even full length - but 2? then they only open at half the width. you could also split them up - like 2 for the top area and 2 for the bottom. only open the area where what you want is stored. I hate louvers - had a bunch in a house and yuk to cleaning those things! lol! the tub/shower - if it looks ok leave it - maybe put new hardware on it maybe to update it. Could always do that later also. they have moisture meters also to check on any dampness behind it. maybe you could rent one? (saw it used on a home show) new paint,new curtains, new shower curtain...you'll be spiffy! and they make slide out things for under the sink areas. I was looking at those the other day online. if it's too much expense right now, you could add those down the road for better use of storage space. they can get expensive.

Thank you. That is basically what I thought. I should be able to remove the wires from the main box and I can cut them back as far as I can. After looking again, it appears as though the disposal is on its own circuit. The dishwasher is on its own circuit. The range is on its own circuit. So, if those breakers are the right amperage for the new units, I can run new wire from the new units to the main box and attach to the old circuit breakers. The refrigerator is not on its own circuit. The old refrigerator would make some lights dim when it kicked on. I am going to terminate those wires inside a junction box with a metal cover plate that can be accessed behind the new refrigerator. Then I am going to put the new refrigerator on the new circuit for the new GFCI outlets in the kitchen. Is that acceptable?

I see your point, marcolo. I've been reading the recent thread about the calm white finished kitchen, and it reminds me that I've got a really good look going on already. So this is the option you like, assuming the range doesn't get moved: It would be so easy to do, and I'm thinking I could improve the function of the pantry alcove even by switching the cleanup sink and the dishwasher, so the DW is in the corner, and the entry doorway leads you right to the sink. I'll have to check how that would work with a dishwasher door. lavender, I agree that one could dress up the over-sink area #wherever it ends up# with vintage detailing. Any sink placement that is not on the peninsula involves looking right at a wall, but I do think there are ways to make that more attractive. And yes, I've not let go of your favorite fridge/sink swap plan. I'm glad you think it would be good to keep the partition walls up; the fridge+ pantry would fit perfectly in the right side of the alcove, and it does preserve that vintage pantry feel if we keep the partition. The other partition, on the left, is actually a bigger problem because that wall uses more space to allow for the recessed fridge. There's a lot of wasted space in that small area, so it would be a good wall to remove, or adjust in some way, if we can do it without destroying the architectural balance. We actually are getting an offer on our house today #!!!!# so I can get serious about taking the next steps with the overall remodel plan, which will help us know about the plumbing options, and the bigger issue of moving the range #still don't think I can talk DH into that one, but it's still in the mix.#

That is exactly what I was thinking, Benje. Or maybe the family room could become a master suite while one of the existing bedrooms is incorporated into the living areas. Like, keep the two farthest left bedrooms and the bathroom as they are, and make the last bedroom into part of the living areas. I have drawn this floor plan to scale with the exception of the family room: Donald, I haven't added the family room yet (though having it on the plan will be key to to actually considering all your options for using that space) because something isn't quite right in your not-to-scale sketch. In your pictures of the kitchen, there is clearly sunlight coming in through a kitchen window. However, if the family room truly (a) is 15'8" x 21' feet long as you stated, (b) with the longer side of that room running left to right as you drew it, and (c) the right wall of the family room aligns with the right wall in the living/dining area as you drew it, then the family room would block any light from coming into the kitchen. Like this: So something isn't right with a, b, or c. By any chance, does that wood door in the dining room lead to a garage, and the family room's right wall actually aligns with the right side of the garage rather than with the right side of the dining/living room space? Which would mean the family room's left wall would be roughly aligned with where the dining room meets the kitchen and therefore the family room would not block the kitchen's window. Like this:
