Day 2

Lowes - buy more mill work, buy subway tile, buy pencil tile. Granite company - went by but not open. We started thinking about the guy that came to do the template and were worried that maybe he got things wrong.

At home: I set up in the garage to apply paint to my existing two coats of primer on the back of my cabinets. Also to spray paint (Rust-o-leum) my hinges matte black. I got black spray paint all over our blacktop. Turns out, Dawn dish washing liquid and a course scrub brush will get it off. Thank goodness cuz DH was fuming!

DH put mill work at the base of the island. He also finished up the bead board. He began taking down the existing back splash. Some of it came down easy and some of it must have been applied with epoxy or liquid nails or something because the drywall starting ripping off with the tile.

you are really giving me some great ideas and encouragement! thank you! Are you using BM Satin Imprevo? in White Dove? oil base? Thanks for the pictures.

Cindy: When your SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS blooms, do post a pic. I've got that one too from Curt but it is not a star performer here yet. Debra: This many blooms this late has to be due to the amount of rain we got over the past month. I don't recall this much showing at this late date. Mantis: yes, earlier pics of GEECHEE were better but just shows how much a late opening with cool temps can do to a daylily. Celeste: I've admired your pics of COUSIN SUZANNE. The race is definitely on here too! Linda and Kay: I'm so thankful to get these blooms this late in the season. I'm always on the scape hunt because I just never know what will show itself. KIOWA SUNSET has always been a favorite of mine. It is registered as a EE but here, it doesn't start blooming till early July and the scapes are taller than 23" as registered. Well, the weather turned and we are already up at 60 degrees F here this morning. Rain, rain, rain so I guess that is why our temps moderated. Julia

sinfonian: how much land do you have? 5 acres.. Is that valley yours, yes....The top of the hill in the picture is about 1/2 way on the lot.. This is a Google Sketch-up that I did of the property using the survey as the base.. or is that what is going to be developed? - Click on picture and I have marked what he wants to develop. The lots would have a nice ocean view but you can see the buildings on the lot that would make putting in a road difficult. Is your garden close to your house? No.. I have 3 ways to go from home in Paradise to the garden... 1)4 lane divided highway it is 40 km (25 mins). 2)By pass Highway and Local = 36 km (30 mins) 3)The very scenic and slow local road = 32 km (35 mins) And a picture of some Swiss Chard in the garden yesterday! I went out to the local organic farm today and was able to buy some Latah Tomato seeds. These are being very grown successfully here with our short season. So maybe next year I will actually be able to grow red tomatoes.. We have just had 2 beautiful days of weather after the hail last week! Thanks guys! I love the window too!!! It was a short rectangle before and we need every bit of light we can muster in that room. The fabricator (to the stars I'm told, lol) came by to template counters today. Exciting, but have to wait 2 weeks for him.. Ugh. But I think I can move some stuff into cabs & drawers before that though, ya? Must. choose. lights. and. finalize. hardware.

Thanks everyone. Glad you liked the flutes (I think that's what they are called - or are they?) on each side of the sink. We were originally aiming for a 3-inch bump out, but due to plumbing issues, etc, we are only bumping out by 1.5 inches. Although I was not happy about that part, I still think it looks quite nice. We are so excited to come home and see the progress. We are getting simple bar pulls (see below) More pictures to follow...

dkbc - yep BM Satin Imprevo WATERBORNE in White Dove. Fresh start primer.

Marthavila - we are so beat. We're in NJ and the heat and humidity were just oppressive today. I was working in the garage because, as I found out yesterday, DH banging about causes me to lose concentration and mess up on my painting.

My "W" monogram tile, pendant lights for island and faucet should be in Monday or Tuesday. Hooray! Electrician is coming tomorrow to start installing recessed lights and make way for island light and sink light. DH will install those after they come in. Granite is being installed August 2. Back splash installed August 3. 40th birthday party, August 14... cutting it close!

Gee, AZW, with a handle like that, I assumed you were in Arizona! Now I come to find that you're just next door in New Jersey? As a Brooklynite, I know exactly the weather conditions you are dealing with as you work. It's been one heck of a scorcher in these parts. All the more reason to exclaim "Wow! over the work you and your DH have been doing. Can't wait to see your birthday present!

Yo! Brooklyn!

I grew up in Arizona and went to the University of Arizona. I've lived all over the US though. Moved here 6 years ago from Chicago. Now I commute into mid-town, M-F.

I just hope and pray it will be done by then! I might have to call in sick a few times before then ;)

I'm in the inferno---I mean NJ-- too.
I love this post. I read yesterday's also. DIY cabinet painting is something I would be nervous about because I tend to rush through everything I do. In addition to knowing exactly what you are doing, which is awesome, you're so organized about it!

Rookie - what is up with this weather!!?!? It's hot, humid, loads of mosquitoes... where the heck are we, the Louisiana Bayou? Thank goodness it rained like mad here this evening.

I don't know what I'm doing. I printed of Michael's painting instructions and have them next to me when I paint.

I research everything to the Nth degree. I am not joking when I say my nickname to my neighbors is Google. :D
