A couple more from the past couple of days-pics

It turned very cool at night (40's F) and some of the daylilies are still chugging along. Found a few more scapes with buds but October is just around the corner so we shall see which ones make it.

KIOWA SUNSET - still has several buds to open

SOMETHING MARVELOUS - more pinkish on the edges but the cool night temps are not stopping it from opening.

GEECHEE SUNSET - yes, another scape and started a few days ago but I only got a pic today. Looks like it doesn't like the cooler temps.

KAREN SUE - sent up a scape this late in the season and opened today.

DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU - I really like this one and if next year it puts out the same amount of scapes and buds as this year it will be a stunner in the garden.

WORTH IT ALL - 1 more bud to go. I photographed this one on 2 different days. Seems like the cool night temps kept the blooms from dying off quickly. First photo is when it first opened early in the morning. Second pic is the next day when it still holds although the petals and sepals aren't as much color.

MEMORABLE KISS - trying to open yesterday morning. Brrrrr, it was really cold.

This is a seedling which sent up a scape about 2 weeks ago. It is from a cross of DARLA ANITA X WILD IRISH. Poor thing was so cold.

I have scapes waiting to open on DARLA ANITA, DILEMMA,WISEST OF WIZARDS, WESTMINSTER LACE and EMPEROR'S CHOICE . VICTORIAN LACE is trying to open again today but I doubt it will fully open. These have all been here at minimum 2 seasons with others being 4 seasons. EMPEROR'S CHOICE really surprised me. Never has it sent up a scape this late. Probably if I keep up with clearing out the dead scapes I may find more. But it is time to cut DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU and bring the scapes inside.:-(.

Gosh, you sure do have lots of scapes still waiting to open. I don't have any, mine are all done except for the ones still blooming. They all look good too for this cold weather we are having. KAREN SUE is my favorite.

That is a lot of things going on for this late in the season. DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU looks great. A few of them definitely look like they are struggling to open due to the cold.

Thanks everyone - I'm glad you liked them! I have some of my minis in a raised bed in the center of my garden and I like having them up higher so I can see them better. The rest are in front of the bigger daylilies. Another thing I like about minis is that they usually take up less space than the larger daylilies, so I have room for more of them. Goodness, you sure have a nice variety of blooms! I love your Ribbonnette. I love mine too, but had to move it from the edge of the woods to a sunnier location. It was leaning toward the sun too much, almost falling over. Nefertiti was on my 2008 wish list, but for some reason, I didn't get it. Now, after seeing your photo, it must go on my 2009 list with an * next to it! Thanks for sharing your beauties, Julie

Yea Chad-that WILL be an issue but thats why it is next to the porch,so I can add on and secure it to the house(-: The 2 varieties I like are the New Zealand purple and the Ricin "Zanzibar" -the latter is the big leaved one (-; Sometimes the leaves on the Purps do look like cooper but it is difficult to capture on "film" All the other Castors are normal sized,the 4 big boys jumped out quick and with the help of a week of 80s in March they broke out of the seedling stage fast-one of the nice things about having all the protection laying around from the palms is that I was able to use some of it on the Bananas and Castors. At one point my Abyssinian grew like 1' in a few days because it was hitting the 90s in the cover- Also-the 4 biggest Castors were planted (by at least)April 6 and I think that is a month earlier than "normal".

Sherry, It is 6 x36 but such a gigantic plant. Sometimes the blooms have been larger but not enough to consider it larger than 6. Kate, Yes I've been pleased with the colors I get. One thing I do, besides try to improve favorites or get good characteristics from some [shape, substance, bud count, etc], is consider Bob Carr's chart that shows which colors most often give what results. Generally Purple and Lavender are dominant. The only thing more dominant are tan and buff, and I have none of those [I used to have Milk Chocolate but got rid of it]. Really Rita? I would have expected your lates to be still doing a show for you.
Casey: I am so happy I bought some doubles this year and DDDY sure turned out to be a winner. Now, if they make it through their first winter, I'll be even happier ;-).

I've been running around like a maniac trying to do as much as possible before the daytime highs only go into the 30's :-O.

It seems you do still have a group of nice ones. I do like DDDY. I have a few trying to open on the cool days, but the only one that has been able to completely open has been a Hanson. (Saucerful of Secrets) I may also start cutting them and taking them to work with me, so they open up and I can enjoy them. I keep hoping for a nice long Indian summer!!

Julia - I'm amazed at how many buds you still have on Kiowa Sunset and Double Dog Dare You. It's nice to see that many daylily photos so late in the year. I think I actually like Worth It All with the light coloring. That one has bloomed for a long time for you.The only thing with buds left here is Last Chance for Romance. I did notice another scape coming on Buttered Popcorn over the weekend.

The veining on Kiowa Sunset is very striking. I've admired your pics of Geechee Sunset, though obviously it is not what it was earlier.

My favorites are the first two....very pretty. I have had night temps in the lower 40's and even 30's most nights lately so what few buds I have left are opening strangely
(all except for Cousin Suzanne which is still opening perfectly). Weird thing I found today was a rebloom scape poking up on 'Passions Promise' which doesn't have a chance. I have my fingers crossed that the buds on 'World Premiere' will at least be able to open ONE so I can see what it looks like. It's a race against the clock!
I have had the blooms on Cousin Suzanne last for 2 whole days now with the cool weather, although of course they aren't very pretty on Day 2. I do like your 'Worth It All' as well. That one looks like it's good enough to eat. Lucky you to still have some beauties! Thanks for sharing.

What pretty blooms, Julia, especially in late September! Geechee Sunset is my favorite, but Memorable Kiss is pretty too.

Cindy: When your SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS blooms, do post a pic. I've got that one too from Curt but it is not a star performer here yet.

Debra: This many blooms this late has to be due to the amount of rain we got over the past month. I don't recall this much showing at this late date.

Mantis: yes, earlier pics of GEECHEE were better but just shows how much a late opening with cool temps can do to a daylily.

Celeste: I've admired your pics of COUSIN SUZANNE. The race is definitely on here too!

Linda and Kay: I'm so thankful to get these blooms this late in the season. I'm always on the scape hunt because I just never know what will show itself.

KIOWA SUNSET has always been a favorite of mine. It is registered as a EE but here, it doesn't start blooming till early July and the scapes are taller than 23" as registered. Well, the weather turned and we are already up at 60 degrees F here this morning. Rain, rain, rain so I guess that is why our temps moderated.
