HOpefully Breezy sees this question and responds because she knows this stuff. But When I'm sitting at a table my legs are under the table so I would think that it would almost meet.
What about googling how to build a banquette or pictures of them. Googling building one would give you the specs and from there give you an idea of how it should be set up.

It's not the banquette dimensions I am having trouble with it is where the edge of the table goes. I figured when sitting down the persons legs are under the table but where is your table top lined up with - is the edge of table top lined up with the seat of the banquette? I am going to try to load a photo - let's see if it works :)

desertsteph, you can't get rid of me I'm addicted but the only downside is I see changes I want to make when people post fabulous pictures of their finished kitchens (actually sometimes I just want to start all over lol) and I don't post really as you are all so knowledgable I don't have anything to add - I just lurk and learn :)

Here's the dumbest suggestion you will get. Can the table be constructed in a way so that it's moveable? This way you can make it custom to whomever is sitting there.

Glad to know you are still lurking about on GW. Me too. Although with the possibility of moving in our future, I really need to start paying attention to all the layout posts again. I never did really look at those and now I'm a little frightened!

In my humble and not so professional opinion... they should be even.... but your banquette seat needs to be reasonably deep (like 16" min). That allows you to not spill food onto your lap (too far), and too close you have to suck in your belly and it is awkward....

We have a banquette at our new house, and are moving this weekend. I'll have real life experience to share soon and will try to update this, but all of my tests have told me "even" is the way to go!

Beekeeperwife - yes the table can be moved so I guess it is not a big deal, I never really thought of that - duh on my part :) I was just trying to center the light over the table but I guess if plan on it being centered when no one is sitting at it, it will always look pretty :) then I can move it forward or back a few inches and I guess it won't matter too much that the light is not centered while having dinner..............will it ???

So do I plan on the table top *edge* being in line with the edge of the seat underneath as a basic guide

Will the seating be a U shape and follow the walls all the way around? I wonder if you could even make it a round booth...like the corner booth in a diner. That would be cool.

Hi there! I'm sorry I saw this last night, but couldn't get to a reply. (Had to work out shower fixture placement for slacker plumber to finally finish his rough-in.)

The table should actually overlap the edge of the seating a bit. I'll include a drawing done by the restaurant designer at DH's office.

If the table doesn't overlap the bench, it's not comfortable to eat. You have to lean and reach to get to your plate. Just think about how you sit to eat at a regular table. Your chair is scooted in under the edge right? Same with a banquette. The designer wrote 3" overhang, but a bit more is sometimes necessary depending on preference.

Bench height is usually about 18". If you really want to research this to death, go to JH Carr's website. They are a restaurant booth manufacturer. You can click on any of the booth styles, and you'll see the dimensions of each--seat height, depth, etc.

if the 'bench' will only be at the back then it won't bother centering the light side to side - right? I think side to side is most important and what will be 'viewable'. if you have to pull the table out a bit to seat someone, no one will be looking up to see if it is even front to back...hopefully.

I don't like a banquette but I can understand why sometimes they are the best fit for a space.

I agree, I don't think I love a banquette, but I agree that sometimes it totally is the right option and in our tiny home I think it might be.

I was going to post pictures of our finished kitchen but can't get tinypic to size them correctly (they are so big, definitely not "tiny" lol) so I posted this one from our blog - for some reason I thought I had posted more over there but I can't find those either but I will keep looking - I know there is a thread here somewhere with about 4 pictures on it and details.

A little history on our tiny St John home - we purchased it 7 years ago, had it in the long term rental market for a year, moved and lived in it for 3 years before hubby started this whole house makeover by himself 2 years ago (3 years come September) Living here for 3 years allowed me to make smarter choices - we have dust from the Sahara Desert, volcanic ash when Montserrat blows and just general wear and tear from the salt that cleaning very "fancy" kitchen cabinets would not have been fun. We have just started the exterior remodel and hubby just finished building scaffolding around the exterior and is 35' up in the air - that having just finished having the house up on jacks while he cut the support posts (which were totally rotted) poured concrete footers then put the house back down........whew we are still standing and better than ever :)

Follow along on our journey if you like and there are plenty of pictures over there (on the blog) - plenty of before and after of the house - kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and a few beach shots as well - enjoy if you decide to follow along.
