After looking at this more, and in different light, this really is unacceptable. I can't ever remember seeing any marble countertop that looks this bad. I was able to get another photo that catches the problem in better scale, and you can see what I'm talking about. See below. I really do understand that some pits and blemishes are normal. But I'm guessing you will agree this is excessive and distracting. So, I guess the real question is, what recourse do I have? And does anyone know how would one go about fixing this to begin with? As I mentioned, the fabricator says that he is not responsible for the surface finish- and it comes that way from the place that sold us the slab. Furthermore, I am not thrilled with the overall quality of his work, so I'm not sure if I trust him to try to "fix" it. I haven't contacted the store where I bought the slab yet. I'm not sure if they should be responsible for repairs because they sold us a bad slab, or if this is the fabricators responsibility. I feel like I'm about to be caught in a 3-way finger pointing argument with no clear resolution. Before I start raising hell with these guys, I want to have a clear idea about whose fault this is, and what kind of resolution I should expect. So, that brings up the second big question. Regardless of whose fault this is- how would one actually fix this? probably 80% of the blemishes are very shallow. I can feel the roughness with a fingernail, but can't feel an indentation with a fingertip. I would think that most of the blemishes could be ground and polished out. Does anyone know how big of a job that is to do on-site after the countertop is installed? Again, your feedback is much appreciated.

I have the exact same set up (exterior door's knob - heavy crystal, of course - is exactly the same height as my Carrera marble countertops. I have a hinge-pin and a felt pad thing (for bottom of chair feet, to protect wood floors) on the door knob. The knob still bangs into the counter sometimes (people who aren't 'trained' open the door too strongly - like the plumber's assistant will just throw it open in a rush and BANG). The marble is dented there (not repairable). So I would for now put the can on the floor like PP shows - its heartbreaking to think of your beautiful counters dented like mine.

Renee you must be overwhelmed with all of these comments. Your countertops are GORGEOUS, so I do hope you keep them. Sophie's suggestion to stain the floors is well worth looking into. For what it is worth my suggestion for your backsplash is to go with a simple solid tile in a lighter color that coordinates with the countertop. I would suggest you not go too small with the tile- 3x6 to 4x12 would be a good size to stick with. You want to avoid too much movement in the backsplash as the counter (and the floor) have quite a bit of movement and you do not want them competing. Let the countertop be the star of the show. I am going through the same thing with my bathroom. The quartz is horrible. It looks beige against my white, brand new cabinets. It also has horrible black specs on it that look like bugs. I spent so much money on it and I am so disappointed in it. Like you, it was supposed to be white with gray veining. I saw the entire slab. I even took a photo of it and got a sample to take home. I can’t seem to get a straight answer from anyone and it’s incredibly disappointing to look at in my otherwise gorgeously renovated master bathroom. In terms of lighting, there is mostly natural light in here so a lighting suggestion is not going to be a viable solution.
