Lowes and Home Depot

boone_2009

If you have used either company for your new kitchen cabinets and countertops, please give me some feedback on your experiences with either.

We do like Kraft Maid ; the NKBA website does have names of other companies with certified kitchen designers, as does the KraftMaid site.

We are keeping the original footprint, not tearing down any walls, will not put in a new floor as we have a beautiful tile one that we wish to keep.

I guess it's the cost that worries us ;won't a private company charge more than these big box stores?

We will also be buying new appliances, though not necessarily at either of the two chains mentioned.

If you had to do it all over agin, would you stick to them? What are the pros and cons you discovered during your renovations?

We live in the San Fernando Valley in So. California.

Thank you so much!

I did get some Kraftmaid cabinets from Home Depot several years ago. We were moving & expanding our existing kitchen so we had to order more.

They took about 6 weeks to come in.

Since then I found another company that is cheaper and they come in a lot quicker. They also sell Kraftmaid.

Just Cabinets (though they sell some nice furniture too)

They are in the MD, PA, DE & NJ.

We used Shuler cabinets from Lowes. We are very please with the quality of the cabinets AND with the expertise and professionalism of Lowes. Their customer service has been excellent.

I am a door and window dealer. Home Depot and Lowes will usually sell stock items for less than I am willing. If the item is special order I can easily beat their price, but more importantly I go to the jobsite and I confirm dimensions and code compliance for no additional cost. Windows and doors can be very complex and expensive and they cannot be returned. This is an area where unless you have had a bad expierence you cannot fully appreciate the value of that service. If the cost from a window specialist is even close to HD or Lowes it's a no brainer. After all if you can't trust them to mix paint correctly how can you expect them to understand Egress codes, Jamb widths, Sight lines, DP ratings, Solar Heat Gain, Structural mulls, flashing details or Temper codes. All of these details must come together in order to ensure a proper fit not just in the opening but in reference to the application. Vinyl windows are not as tricky but they still require more knowledge than their employees usually have. The simple rule of thumb for the big box stores, if you know exactly what you need and where to find it on the shelf, buy it and you probably saved some money. If not, find a professional that you trust.

Lowes and Home Depot to source entire kitchen?

    Q

    Comments (6)
my parents used Lowes. my father got a contractor's discount somehow. they have solid plywood shaker cabinets with soft close, drawers in the plinths, bought all of their appliances - GE and LG fridge. they have two dishwashers, two ranges, two sinks, one french door fridge, nicely done granite, porcelain tile floor and backsplash. The entire thing including demo, electric, plumbing, cabinets, tops, all tile work and prep was 35K in a 12x24 kitchen using the existing footprint. they were very happy with service. this is very much a local thing. Even a year out, Lowes came back no questions asked to deal with some small issues that they did not catch initially. the granite installer did a very nice job. they had something weird in the granite - like a small repair with a greenish tinge in it - they just Lowes know and the granite company was called back to fix it. the service was superb. they are older people and this was a very low hassle renovation for them, my mother says she has never cooked in such a wonderful place.

Lowes or Home Depot basic white subway tile?

    Q

The stock subways both carry are more of a creamy white. If you want bright white you can special order Dal arctic white from HD or whatever the american olean version of that color is from lowes. I did a backsplash for my parents for a rental with the off the shelf Interceramic from lowes (I think in some areas the Lowes stock AO, in others Interceramic) and it was almost exactly the same color. The Interceramic one might have been a tiny bit whiter but I can't remember The other difference was that the Interceramic one had separate lugs instead of a continuous lug at the edges and was slightly flatter than the Dal one. The quality and price were the same.

Lowe's vs. Home Depot pressure-treated decking?

    Q

    Comments (3)
Regardless of where you buy, the wetter the boards are, the more they will warp. I've bought from both chains and lumber yards and gotten wet boards from all three. A plus for HD/Lowes is you can hand select each board. Not so possible from a lumber yard. Point two, 5/4 decking dries out faster than 2x6 or 2x8 boards. It is also easier to force back straight if necessary. Last deck I built was done with cedar 5/4 lumber. No moisture problems and it looks better. Cost is higher, but not as high as composites.

I just ordered our island cabinets from HD due to the cost. I shopped around and with the sale HD was having they came in about $1000 less than a few local cabinet stores- and that was on only 3 base cabinets! Im sure if I was doing a whole kitchen it would be much less!

We ordered Thomasville and are very pleased with the quality. OUr kitchen designer at HD was very experienced but she did miss a few things i.e. forgot or simply didn't know she had to order facings for our toe kick drawers so they came in unfiinshed and now we have to wait another 3 weeks to get the facings and have the gc come back out and install. She also didn't walk me thru enough of the details of the island. I wanted a lot of trim pieces to spiff it up and she missed that. So again, I had to go back in meet with her after the island install and add on additional pieces. THis was all a bit if pain but to save $1000 I could deal with it.

Off topic a bit...Home Depot in our area has such bad air quality, I couldn't walk into the store, without my head stuffing up and my eyes watering. Apparently they don't belive in ventiation, when they cut all the wood in that store...and we were on the opposite end, of a fairly new and large Home Depot.

Lowe's is a little 'dusty' but never like this...just in case these kinds of things bother you at all. I'm kind of sensitive, but my mom is not...and she said her head really stuffed up at Home Depot, too.

I also have to confess the reason we also lean towards HD & Lowes is because our grocery store (Giant Eagle) gives us $.10 off a gallon of gas for every $50 spent including buying gift cards. Once in a while the do $.20 cents off. (30 Gallon limit, but you can also fill a gas can).

So whenever there is a large purchase planned (Sears, HD, Lowes, Staples etc) we go get gift cards first. It's very satisfying to fill DH's truck & a 5 gallon can and have the pump say $00.00.

We just got kraftmaid cabinets from Lowes. They are not installed so can't comment on quality yet but they only took 3 weeks to be delivered. I think if you are not interested in changing the footprint or making any big changes, then a big box store is not a bad idea. I think the "kitchen designers" there are really hit or miss though - something that would matter more if you were making major changes to footprint etc. I know Kraftmaid often offers promotions etc - not sure if these are only available through the big box stores or not. We got free upgrade to premium white finish as well as a bunch of other stuff.

We checked with both Lowes and Home Depot for our cabinets. If we had gone that direction, it would have been with Lowes. We decided to build our own cabinets and order the doors and drawers from Scherr's. I don't know how they match up price-wise for full cabinets, but we are thrilled with the quality of the doors and drawers we ordered! They are really wonderful to work with, and when you call a real person answers the phone - usually the owner. We had them in 2 weeks. Our island should be complete by next weekend and we should have pictures available if you are interested.

We just ordered our cabinets (Kraftmaid) from HD. Expected delivery was less than 4 weeks from order. We do not have them yet but process so far has been good. I think we did luck out w/ our designer though. Lots of experience and she even gave me her cell number to have in case any isssues during the process. We too shopped around and compared with a couple of local cabineta makers and others who sold KM. HD beat everyone because of the special they had last month.

We are DIY and on a fairly tight budget so we watched every cent. Excited to see them!

I have done both a kitchen and a bathroom and HD and Lowe's could not beat either independent I used in price.

And with the kitchen, the HD lady told me my design wasn't possible, so they had to change it to fit their product. I wanted glass doors on both sides of cabinet so I could dishes in from the dishwasher side, and pull them out from the table side. And I wanted glass to bring in some light.

So be prepared to give up a few options here and there if you go with the big box stores.

  • aliris19

Colorfast - I wanted to do that too! It was designed away for a variety of reasons. I forgot about it until you mentioned it.

Boone - I'm in socal and can assure you there are a lot of small guys around. If I were you I'd take the quotes you have from HD and Lowes and check around with some of these other folks. There are - as I'm sure you know - a ton of cabinet shops in the Valley. I know of several out Anaheim-way. Many of these guys will match prices you get at big box stores even if theirs come in a little higher just as a point of pride that they can do as good or better a job for the same price-point. And it's really wonderful, for many different reasons, to deal with someone directly, who is making what you want precisely. Some people are very clear that they value you as a potential customer and are willing to negotiate a lot to retain your loyalty and work with you and your budget to generate something homemade of value.

If you'd like some more specific ideas, please feel free to contact me offlist.

There's also Builder's Surplus down south that I understand has tons of cheap options in stock. You don't really get to pick, just go in with your measurements and load up. It's supposed to be fairly intense but if you're primed and know what you want, you can evidently get some great deals.

We bought Kraftmaid from Home Depot. The cabinets have only been in a few weeks and just got plumbing done Wednsday so haven't been using them long. I like the cabinets and the quality seems fine. I didn't shop around with other brands. For me it was the convenience of being able to go on off hours. Oyr kitchen designer was very knowledgeable Cabinets took about 3 weeks. We added some things after and those items took 2-3 weeks. I didn't use their installation because we had much more involved than just switching out cabinets.

We went with kraftmaid 3 years ago through Lowes. I am still very happy with the quality. They look just as they did 3 years ago, only a little darker due to the cherry. Was happy with the process and the install.

Thank you all so very much for your helpful feedback; please forgive me for the delayed reply.
We will get bids from private cabinet makers - one will be coming this week.
I'm also looking at Schuler cabinets, Petuniatwelve, after reading your post. Thanks!
I've been reading tons of online forums and am at a point where I'm "almost" thinking of postponing the kitchen redo, hehe. Why, oh why can't there be only two choices for everything?? :(
Aliris19: Do you know of any good cabinet shops in the Northridge area?
Compared to you all, I am quite ignorant about kitchen renovations ( change "quite" to "very").
For instance, I didn't even realize that I could just buy the cabinets from HD and have then installed by someone else, as Maries1120 did! Thanks, maries!
However, since we are retaining the footprint and not doing anything major such as breaking down walls or putting in new plumbing etc., we would like everything to be done by one company/contractor.
(The only thing I am not sure about is whether to replace our current trash compactor ( which gave up the ghost years ago) with pull-out trash bins or a new compactor.)
Colorfast - thanks for the heads-up!
LovesPurple: Thank you for that link to Scherr's - I've bookmarked it.
Ar84: I agree with you about the 'designers' at the big box stores :-). But as you noted, we don't really need a kitchen designer - I know what I want and we are not changing the footprint. Did you get the upgrade through Lowe's or KraftMaid?
Breezygirl: The installation process has me worried too ( with the big box stores). I guess it's a hit-or-miss type of thing as others who posted seem to have had a good experience. But knowing my luck ( or more accurately, lack of it), I'll be the 'miss'!
Calimama: I'm assuming from your name that you are in CA - good to know you had a satisfying experience with Lowes.
City2burbs: I'm excited for you! Good luck with your new kitchen!:-)
Babs711: I'm waiting now to see how other companies' bids compare with the big box stores.
Barbcollins: Thank you for your prompt feedback. Looks like you got lucky with both! Thank you for the link - sadly they are not in CA.
Enright5: Your reply will be very helpful to me if it comes down to us choosing between HD or Lowes.
Lavender_lass: What can I say? ;-). I, too, prefer our local Lowes to HD as the latter is gloomy and less organized.

I just had my kitchen cabinets priced at Lowe's. Kraftmaid was relatively inexpensive. The Diamond cabinets were a bit more. I went to an independent who has Omega cabinets (which are the same parent brand as Diamond) for about the same money. I have Omega in my current home, and love them. So, I am going to use the independent.

The kitchen designer at Lowe's was OK and I found him to be very likeable overall.

For anyone who might be curious, we went to Builder's Supply about 3 weeks ago looking for cabinets to put in a rental condo. We were not really thrilled with anything there. Several of the lines of cabinets had really thin shelves that would not stand up to very much weight. I think with some, you have the option of upgrading to thicker shelves, but I think they have to be special ordered. We ended up buying some stock cabinets from HD that were better built and less expensive. We needed to use stock cabinets as we don't have the time to order custom.

    Hi,
I wanted to chime in. We bought our KM cabinets from Lowes, because of the sale AND the 18 month FREE financing. We too did not change the footprint. I LOVE the cabinets! However we would never use one of their contractors to install. Way too expensive! We were very lucky to find someone, local, who came with a great reputation. He did so much more than Lowes was going to do (changed our lighting from florecent to recessed, put in more light switches and dimmers for undercab lights, and was $1000 less than Lowes wanted to JUST install cabs.!
    Good luck!

Wow, Sandesurf, those are big savings! Thanks for your helpful post.
Did you do the measurements for the cabs yourself and then go to Lowes and order the cabinets? Or did you pay Lowes to come in and take the measurements?

  • sandesurf

    Hi boone,
My husband took some measurements, that I took to Lowes. The KD there was extremely helpful. He filled in the grid, using our measurements. Made suggesting and gave tips. He let me know that Lowes was only responsible for ordering the right size cabinets IF Lowes came out to do the measuring. We then had our local contractor double check my husband's measurments and we went ahead with the order. I think we were extremely lucky to find this local guy. Not only was he reasonable, but he did a fantastic job!

  • sandesurf

By the way, I LOVE our Kraftmaid cabinets! I had two custom companies give us an estimate, before I went with Lowes. The prices were all within a few hundred dollars of each other, but we didn't really "need" custom, and the fact that KM came with the soft close drawers AND the FREE financing, sealed the deal.

  • maries1120

We have someone up the road that builds cabinets. He was over and checked out the Kraftmaid and thought they were well made and finished. We went with the extra construction features. A lot of cabinet options to choose from and trim pieces too. I modified a few cabinets - shorter depth, converting a wall to a base etc... My favorite is the filler pullouts for spices. At the last minute we decided on under cabinet trim and that really finished things off. They weren't cheap but I liked the convenience of being able to shop at night or weekends. With their special, we "saved" over $3000 on these. If you belong to Angie's List you could check there for installers but personal references are best if you can find a GC that way. We had 3 estimates and this one wasn't the cheapest but I have been very happy with him. Even with everything going smooth, it is stressful so having a GC that you are comfortable with is priceless. Our GC even took delivery of the cabinets for me so I didn't need to take off work.

Boone, I have a comment on your dilemma for trash: We replaced a broken trash compactor in our old house (a few years after moving in...)and loved it. When we redid our kitchen there we put in another. Then we moved, and redid the second kitchen. DH still loved the compactor so I put one in, but he is rarely around when I have to empty the trash and I have to say that at this point I am waiting for a terminal event so I can replace it with a trash pullout. You can get two tall bins in one cabinet and can't really ever get the trash as heavy as with a compactor. I would have one for trash and another for recycle (my tiny recycle under the sink fills up very fast) in the same cab.

This may have to do with there being only two of us now, or that I am older. And we had a lot of years of happiness with our TC. Just some thoughts for you to ponder!

One of our active contributors here on the forum, GreenDesigns, just went to work for one the Lowes in Memphis, so there is always the chance that you could find someone knowledgeable like that at a local box store. But, always, always, always spend enough time talking with the "KD" to see if they actually DO know what they are talking about and weren't just transferred in from the paint department because they were "good with colors".

We've decided on Kraftmaid ( phew, one decision over with, a few more waiting!) maple cabinets after much to-and-froing between KM, Schuler, Shenandoah and Diamond.

Sandesurf: We don't 'need' custom, either :-). Thanks for your replies!

Maries1120: I agree, personal references are best. The first installer who came over ( picked from the Yellow pages) was very nice but did not come up with any references we could contact. I checked his license etc and everything looked good..but...

Claybabe: Lol! We are 'only two now', too - and definitely older as well :-), so I know fully well what you mean! We did decide to go with the 2 bin pullout. Thanks for your suggestion!

Hollysprings: Your wise advice regarding KD's is much appreciated and duly noted :-). Thanks! The Lowe's nearest our home has the transferred-from-the-paint-department KD, hehe. So we are going to check out another branch a bit farther away.

Jasperdog and Colorfast : we are getting an estimate from Lowe's and two others from private contractors. Thanks for chiming in!

I remodeled my kitchen 2 years ago with Kraftmaid solid cherry slab cabinets ordered through Lowe's (cost was $14K). The salesperson was awesome and helped me order and upgrade every option desired (lazy susan, 3 tambour storage units, pullout waste and recycling, breadbox, pullout drawers, etc.). The entire order arrived in 2.5 weeks and there wasn't a single defect.

Seven weeks ago in June, I went to the same Lowe's and the young man I'd worked with before was no longer there. The person who was there was not remotely as helpful or good at offering options or following up on the order. I ordered a simple mirror, vanity wall cabinet, drawer, one trim piece, and stain to remodel a bathroom. Six weeks later, the items arrived and the vanity wall cabinet looked as if it was put together in about 10 minutes and the boards cut with a dull steak knife. I returned it and was told it would be another 3+ weeks to receive another. Lowe's and Kraftmaid both claim that replacement items are given priority, but they don't tell you that their definition of priority doesn't take into account the fact you've already waited 6+ weeks and still have no item. They put you in line behind everyone who ordered after you did.

VERY disappointed with both the quality and the service from both Lowe's and Kraftmaid and will never use either of them again. I called the company and spoke with 3 people who don't seem to grasp or care that their definition of the word "priority" is totally inaccurate. It will have been ten weeks before I receive a 24x36" vanity that is 7" deep and cost over $400. And until then, I can only hope it's not the garbage quality I received from them last week. :(

  • beth62

Thanks, boone. I guess the basis of such profound disappointment was that my experience 2 years ago was fantastic. One of their people I spoke with said that the reason I got them so quickly then was because they'd lost so much business due to the recession and now it's rebounding. Obviously they either laid off a bunch of people or are rushing, but either way, quality is horrid. Earlier today they promised the new one would be inspected before it's shipped; when I asked if every piece is inspected (knowing this one clearly was not) she didn't know! Not kidding.

I've heard that custom costs no more and sometimes less (and also because it's the dealers who double the price). I'd check with a custom cabinet maker before making any decisions.

Here is a picture of the kitchen we did 2 years ago. I'm not sure how to post more than one picture in a post (new here).

In your place, I'd feel really betrayed.
Thanks for posting the pic, Gw-fan.

I guess like most everything else, all depends on the skills of the individuals involved. So no more can HD be dismissed out-of-hand than can they be counted on either just because previously the experience was good. Thing is, turnover at the hourly big-box stores will be high and while the standardized product they ship may be +/- the same-ish year to year, the oversight of it and ordering of it is not. A smaller kitchen outfit or workshop will be more long-term consistent. You just have to be more atuned to your instincts, perhaps, when contemplating going with HD.

boone, sorry, didn't see your reply. The counters are blue pearl granite, and yes, I do absolutely love them. We had them installed by a local granite company. We bought floor tile of the same b/p granite to do some framing on the backsplash and also the smaller backsplash under a raised bar; that saved a ton of money and it looks identical to the thick slabs on the counters.

    Good luck to you!
