I did that when we remodeled the kitchen in our old house in 2003. Looking at the picture now, I see I should have turned on the light in the hood. It seemed to nicely set off the decor and functional items that lived on the counters. (We moved 4 years ago) The splash was solid granite in all areas though there was a big window above the sink so it was narrower (4-5 inches) and then that width continued that cabinet run (where the veges are sitting on the right side of the photo. I might have other photos on a cd if you find this helpful.

Thanks to both of you for your help. Do you know if it is possible to run it all the way to the ceiling? We will be having a chimney vent and were considering this? If not I like the larger vent shown above if it stops at the vent.

One issue is we will be venting out horizontally. The fabricator told me he would put a hole in the granite for the vent.

I am hardly a granite expert but I have seen solid slab shower walls and those are really tall pieces so it seems like counter height to ceiling would not be too different......

sjmitch - thanks that looks great and is exactly what I was looking for. In fact our vent is almost exactly the same and granite is very similar!!!!

Did you vent externally and if so was it vertical or horizontal?

We probably will only do a 4" backsplash everywhere else though.

The vent goes vertical up through the ceiling into the attic where it takes a 90 degree turn to horizontal and then goes straight outside. The section of backsplash each side of the cooktop is the only backsplash areas so it wasn't too much more of an expense after deciding to do the full height behind the cooktop.=

Thanks again. We are going to vent horizontally so hopefully it will not be an issue. We have had 2 tile backsplashes and decided with this full remodel to do the full backsplash behind the range. We feel it is kind of like an art piece and like the look.

Just be very careful to build your cabinets with a lot of extra support at the rear. None of that flimsy 1/8" hardboard that is sometimes used. You're putting quite a point load on them---and your flooring. Make sure you joists under your flooring are in good shape and that the slab is attached to the wall in a safe manner---something other than just silicone adhesive.

Good points hollysprings! Do you know what is usually used for adhesive? Our floor joists are good an 16" spaced with steel I bean below kitchen. We are also ripping up ceramic tile and putting hardwood in kitchen and adjoining sunken family room. I was a little shocked when they told me the hardwood weighed over 3,000 pounds.

Not sure I follow you about where the stress will be on the cabinets? The granite going to the ceiling is only behind the 36" range. Rest of it will be a 4" backsplash.

sjmitch - I know this is a dumb question but I assume the granite on the walls is not as thick (3cm) as countertop?

Actually it IS the same thickness - 2cm. Most granite they use here in Ontario, Canada is 2 cm., but some 3 cm is available. The fabricaters build up the edges (of the countertops) on the 2 cm. - I have not heard of any problems with them doing this. FYI - it is typhoon bordeaux.

Thanks sjmitch. I believe ours is 3cm but will check. Difference is ours will not be on any cabinets since it will be behind a 36" range so I need to check with fabricator.

Boxerpups - Thank you for the Pics we have googled hi and low without finding that many. The first one is what we are looking to do and I am glad to see that the granite has a full range in front of it not a cooktop with a cabinet.

My only concern is that we were not running our cabinets quite to the ceiling on each side of the range. Wonder how that will look????

Does anyone know how difficult it is to attach chimney style hood to the granite and vent it horizontally?

I'm sure you noticed that they majority of pictures that boxerpups posted have a cooktop in a cabinet and th granite only goes to the bottom of the hood. That's because what you want done is pretty difficult logistically. You need to fasten a good sized angle iron lower brace to the studs for that slab to rest on. That means you may want to add additional support in the wall behind your range, especially if you have another floor or basement below. You also need some clips on the sides secured to studs, as well as another piece of iron at the top to secure it. These aren' items that a granite fabricator can usually supply. You need an iron worker involved. Plus, in your case, you'll need small holes drilled VERY precisely in the granite for your mounting brackets for the hood. You only get one shot at this, so make sure you get the height right before drilling. And, drilling holes to hang a hood off of the granite can put stress on your granite, and it may crack if it's one of the more delicate ones or if the screws are overtightened. I would bet that your fabricator will have you sign a waiver saying that the liability will be on your shoulders for this installation. You will also need your HVAC installer to know about where you need the hole for the duct and the thickness of the granite so he can plan the ductwork accordingly.

If you have the option, it would be easier to vent through the roof. That would make the ducting portion easier, but it won't make the other logistics easier. I think it will be a stunning look if you have the knowledgable team that can accomplish it. However, it can be a total disaster if you don't have everyone coordinated and performing their portion of the job meticulously. You're going to have to ask to see a few installations from your tradesmen before you trust them with this delicate of a project.

Boxerpups- Do you know if the white backsplash, with gray, is marble or granite? If granite, do you know what kind? Beautiful pictures :)

Sskit- Three of those pictures have the granite going behind the hood and I think it's a beautiful look. It might be more difficult, but if you can find good tradespeople, I say go for it!

Our backsplash is in 3 pieces. The largest bs piece (behind the cooktop) is 2.5ft X 5 ft. The weight is approx 200lbs. It rests on our granite counter which is supported along the back with a wood support. The hood is held up by 2 wall anchored screws. The location of these screws was determined by doing a pre-install - so we had the screw and anchor positions, then removing the hood for the granite fabricaters to determine the position of the holes in the granite. Our granite guys were great - no problem - everything lined up perfectly. They cut the holes in their shop before they brought the granite here.

I agree with Live Wire, while the concept is not new, hanging large format 2cm stone on a vertical wall should be taken seriously. Any well thought-out stone installer will know to ask the right questions and they will make certain other tradesmen are not left holding the bag after the stone is installed. Just make sure the obvious utilities are accessible and the rough in is complete and most importantly identify who is responsible for each task. Another option for the stone installer is to install mechanical clips around the exhaust opening. It�s another way to help pin the stone to the wall without having to worry about hiding the anchors. Something similar to Hohmann and Barnard #432 would work great (again I am sure your stone installer can also provide alternate options).

Thanks everyone for your help and input on this! This is exactly what I was looking for so I can at least be educated when talking with the stone fabricator and our contractor. Our granite has a lot of movement so we decided to go this route along with a 6" backsplash. There are so many things to coordinate - ripping up existing ceramic tile, removing existing kitchen, backsplash and appliances, new hardwood floor, new cabinets, granite, new appliances, lighting, etc. It is finally about to happen - exciting but scary - Thanks again!!!!

Just to update the thread--we just installed a granite backsplash, just behind our cooktop. The hood has not arrived but will be a Euroline chimney style hood by Vent-A-

Hood. The granite is Tuscan Brown. Tile backsplash surrounding granite is italian ceramic in Perla (has a light gray tone) by Quintessenza.

Piggybacking off the original post. Recently did my kitchen on a budget. Did not change cabinetry or appliances. Granite is new. Kitchen island is new. I should have installed a vent hood but I did not. Anyway I am wanting to fix this. My current backsplash is solid slab look. Not sure I will find similar granite to extend all the way to the top. I love that look. Any input will be appreciated

You know where you bought the granite, that’s the first place to start. Other than that what input are you looking for?

Not sure I will find the granite that we originally used. Are there are options with materials without it looking like an after thought

I think you know the answer to that. You say you ‘aren’t sure’ you will find the same granite. Have you looked? That’s where I would start.
