Quick- Hood- how far in from edge?

The hood that is to go over the island is 24 inches deep. The cooktop will be placed about 3 inches in from the edge of the cabinet (3/4 inch cabinet wall + 2 inches for ventilation). I want to place the hood "relatively low" to get good capture. So, it has to go back a little to not hit me (or a tall cook) in the head. How far back from the edge? 6"? In other words, 3 inches further in than the edge of the cooktop?

Check the specifications for the specific hood -- especially with an island hood, you want to get it just right.

You need to completely cover the cooking surface...so use that as a guideline. If possible, you also want it to be 3" in front of and 3" behind the cooking surface...So, if the cooking surface is 18" deep, you want the hood to start out 3" before the cooking surface & extend 3" past the back of the cooking surface.

Ditto on the sides...that's why it's recommended your hood be 6" wider than your range/cooktop...especially on an island or peninsula!

Don't worry too much about hitting your head...our 24" deep hood is over our cooktop on a wall so it's only 1.5" in from the edge of the counter. We don't hit our heads on it. Our hood is mounted 30" above the cooking surface and we range in height from 5'10" to 6'6". The only time I remember anyone hitting their head is my DH...and that was when he was peering up into the underside of the hood...he hit his head on the way out not on the way in! My entire family uses the cooktop & hood from time to time and we've had no problems!

Don't know but I think you can have your filter as far from pond as you want depending on filter and pump. I have 2 systems and 2 pumps. First: Skimmer with tsurnami summersible pump to a waterfall approx. 30 ft away. Second : Bottom drain to sc to two 55 gal.drums filters gravity fed then sequence external pump pumping to 100 gal skippy 40 ft. away. Dont see why it wouldn't work but would be easier if hsd some pictures.

I think some (if not most) recessed light fixtures are designed som that you can adjust the angle. If you find such fixtures, the possibility of glare would be less a concern.

Sorry about the cardboard in the picture. DH is using it to make a template for the butcher block. We should have a standard overhang as the IKEA piece is the proper depth. Our question is simply about how to cut the right hand edge. I think we will make a straight cut to run along the panel and not try to make the edge extend to the outer right edge. Thanks for your input. Now we have to decide how to finish it. I have heard many people love Waterlox, but I have also seen beautiful results with boiled linseed oil and Tung Oil finish. It will not be used for food prep and it is actually the area we use as a mini office. Any ideas?
