interested in the replies to this... I've been gonna look at battery lights - just haven't taken the time yet. Not sure what's available using batteries.

Wow, you must have been reading my mind! I was just testing some of these.

I have one of the Sylvania Linear Swivel right here on my desk (DH bought them for me when I complained about my office being to dark some times).
Pros: Battery operated; not harsh light. Can swivel it back and forth so you can make is shine on the counter or the backsplash.
Cons: Touch light. Have to touch it in a certain place but not hard. You can brush it to turn in on.

Sylvania Golden Dragon;
Pros: Battery Operated. Motion Detect and you can also dim it.
Cons: Can be a little tricky to dim/turn off. Light is a little harsher, and pinpointed. Can't adjust the direction

I would prefer something with motion detection. I am picturing myself with wet or dirty hands and I would not want to touch the light.

Next time I go to a Walmart I am going to look for one of these

It looks like the head may swivel front to back which would be fine.

This one also looks nice, but is not low profile, and still a touch light.

If I can't find something with motion detection I will probably go with the Linear Swivel. I guess I can always brush it with the back of my wrist if my hands are dirty.

Thanks for both of your input! I guess we will have to experiment since not many people seem to have tried them. I am really curious to try the IKEA ones since they seem perfect, I am just baffled as to how the sensor works. Maybe it's a motion sensor? Light sensor?

I will probably buy some within the coming weeks and report back.

Hi,

My parents use a battery powered led in their kitchen above the sink, or they did. It provided good light; however, it turned on with a motion sensor (which they prefered over having to manually activate it), but would turn on whenever you walk by the sink, so it would turn on a lot (sink is in pass through hallway of kithcen) and battery drained fast (maybe about 2 weeks). I think if it is in a corner cabinet or super susan and you got a motion sensor one, it would probably only turn on when you open the door, so you shouldn't have a battery issue like my parents did. They just stopped using theirs cause they got tired of changing the battery.

I wanted some light above my countertops. They actually put off a lot of light. It was hard to get them to come on and off. They ate through a lot of batteries, which were the small discs. Not exactly cheap. They fell down after a while, too. The backs of them had this adhesive that couldn't hold the heaviness of the light after a while. So... I haven't used them in a couple of years. And, I think they have been thrown away by now. I'm going to install regular lights. Hope that helps.

The ones I have use AAA or AA not the little watch batteries.

And the motion detection on the Dragon is not that sensitive. You have to actually wave you hand under it to turn it on. The one I have is stuck to a shelf above my desk. My laptop sits underneath it. I can open my laptop, type etc and it is not triggered.

It has been stuck to the bottom of a melamine shelf for over 6 months. No sign of it falling. I just don't like it because the light is so directed it shines on my laptop keyboard. Doesn't help me.

Update!

I bought two different kinds of LED lights - squarish Energizer ones, and rectangular, swivel, Sylvania ones. Both use 3 AAA batteries. Haven't used them long enough to comment on battery life.

The Energizer ones are the simple push on/off kind, the Sylvania have a touch sensor where you lightly brush your fingers over it and it will turn on. It works well.

I would say that the Energizer ones are brighter and produce more light. The light color from both is very cool/blue. The Sylvania lights are easier to use, adjustable and the light is more diffuse (but at the expense of being less bright compared to Energizer).

They both come with sticky strips for attachment - but then the problem comes when you want to take them off to replace the batteries. I solved this by buying velcro strips and using those in lieu of the provided strips.
