beautiful! i love black walnut so much i chose it for our floors. did you have the wood milled yourself? we had two very large walnut trees (easily 100 ft each) that unfortunately had to come down for our build. dh called around to see if we could have these milled but was basically told it was a costly hassle and we couldn't be certain of the quality. (sigh) they were gorgeous trees and i felt as though we committed some kind of crime against humanity after they came down ...and i still do.

Thanks kateskouros! That's too bad you couldn't use the wood from your trees. How neat that would have been--the story behind your pieces would've been priceless.

We did not mill the boards ourselves--they weren't from our own trees. We had gone to a furniture-maker in Brooklyn, and he bought the log/boards from one of his suppliers/sources (the lumber guys mill the boards and dry them in the kiln, etc., and then the furniture-maker mills the boards down even further before cutting and shaping the pieces). We specified the size for the tables/buffet/shelf (should've gone up to a foot longer on the DR table, but as I've said on many occasions, I am spatially challenged, and at the time, we didn't think the space could handle it) and we discussed certain characteristics or attributes we preferred and ones we hoped to avoid (e.g. grain pattern, acceptable knot type/size, etc).

sochi--Thank you! I had a feeling you'd like it after seeing the gorgeous walnut in your home! It was serendipitous that there was enough wood to make everything from the same log. Convincing DH to "act now" so as not to miss out on that opportunity was a big factor in getting a buffet sooner rather than waiting! Same with our little table. There was just enough wood remaining after the larger pieces were completed to make it, so we went ahead with that shortly after the buffet was finished.

Wow-those are some beautiful pieces! I love black walnut as well-I wish I could have convinced DH to go that direction with our cabinets, but he was concerned about how dark it can be, and was pretty hooked on cherry. We do have a black walnut bookcase I moved here (NW) from my parents' house (PA) almost 30 years ago-it was built for THEIR house in PA from wood from VA.

cat_mom, that table and buffet is stunning! I LOVE LOVE LOVE walnut, and plan to have it as an island top. Your's is beautiful, and I think you can even see the age in the actual piece because of the character in the wood.

It ties in well with your wood floors too! I would love to have something like yours to use in the bathroom as a vanity!

leela4 and susied3--Thanks for your kind words! We felt like kids in a candy store the first time we walked into Jonah's shop and saw all the amazing wood they had.

It's amazing how nicely all the different wood we have in our house "play" together. :-) We have lightly stained cherry cabs in the kitchen (around the corner from the DR), unstained white oak floors, Golden Oak stained oak railings/spindles and interior and exterior doors, jambs, and moldings, pine windows and moldings stained to "match" Golden Oak, and a grapevine coffee table in the LR (looks almost like driftwood), all within view of the walnut furniture in the DR. We like the mix of wood species and colors.

carol08--Thank you! I am extrememly happy with our kitchen and DR, but I will admit to seeing some others here that are absolutely lust-inspiring. Kitchen porn is a wonderful thing to behold! LOL

jsweenc--you win the thesaurus of the day prize! Thank you for the superlatives! The bowl is a Michael Aram piece (loooooove his stuff!). I had remembered seeing it long ago in Bloomingdale's, and had a sudden notion that it would be just perfect on our table. Turned out, Bloomie's discontinued selling it, but I made some calls to a few of the Bloomingdale's locations within driving distance, and located 2 bowls at one of the stores. Not only was the bowl marked down drastically (clearance price!), but I had a store coupon which brought the price down even further--yay for us!

trailrunner--the poor table hasn't served as a backdrop for any food of late--maybe when the bathroom work is done and stuff is cleared out (and off--my painting and wall hanging are still residing on the table awaiting being hung!).

firsthouse_mp--no, all the edges on all the pieces are straight edges. We had the option to use live edges when we had the table made, but opted not to (felt we'd have more consistent usable space down the length of the table having all straight edges). When we had the buffet and shelf made, a few months later, we toyed with the idea of having a live edge on the shelf. I'm not 100% sure, but I think Jonah convinced us to stick with the straight edge (for continuity, since none of the other pieces had live edges).
