Can I use a microwave/hood combo not over the stove?

I have been searching for a convection microwave that is 16" or less deep. I finally found one but it is a microwave/hood combo. The location I want to put the microwave is not over the stove so I don't need the hood option but this is the only convection microwave I can find that fits the depth requirement. Would it be possible to use a microhood not over the stove? Would it be really, really weird? It would be going in a shallow bank of cabinets that are 16" deep. I would put things like a regular toaster and maybe the coffee pot directly under it.

Here's the one I'm considering: GE Profile Spacemaker Series JVM1790

There are some Over the Counter microwaves...that don't have the ventilation system. I also have GE Profile Spacemaker that is counterop and about 13" deep. It comes with an over the counter mounting kit as an option.

But yeah, you can put a microhood elsewhere if you want. People do.

A large piece of frosted glass? (Altho I love stainless steel, and there are several catalogs that sell self-adhesive "tiles" of it, so it could be a DIY job.) My sister has a large piece of glass that her kitchen reno team painted (for a reason that I think was the heat factor of the stove, merely putting clear glass over the painted wall wouldn't work).

Tammy, I personally think your idea is a good one. I lived in a custom home-3900 sq. ft. and had my microwave put over the cook top with intention. Loved it!!! Made cooking a breeze. I entertain a lot and have tons of company frequently. It worked well. We're currently building another custom home and I'm putting my microwave back over the stove again. This will be my 3rd microwave over the stove. It is vented outside our home. I have never had problems with this and I've had it for 16 yrs. I think you're a smart cookie making use of the space you have and dressing it up a bit too. I like unusual things and really don't like being like anyone else or having my home look like anyone else's. It's easy to go with the crowd but more fun to stand out and do what you love and what suits you and your style.

Check the handles too. The stainless steel handles should be similar. Which one are you buying? I am looking at the Samsung with 400cfms, but I like the look of the GE profile OTR microwave with 300 cfms. Mine is over a stovetop, so it's not as critical. Good luck with your decision.

I have a small kitchen and I just bought an OTR microwave, and I love it. I had to pay an electrician to put in a dedicated line and outlet in the upper cabinet, and I bought a Maytag OTR microwave which has a crisper function and melts butter 8 ways, and does everything but stand on it's head. My hood fan which I removed, had a wall vent installed, and I hooked the microwave up to that, and it is wayyyyyy better at removing exhaust than the hood fan. This microwave has 2 speeds of a venting fan. I cooked a turkey in the oven a couple of days ago, for 4 hours and this is the first time I did not have to turn the heat off in my home due to the great exhaust capabilities of this OTR microwave. Times have changed; microwaves are wayyyy better. Why would I want a vent fan when this space can have double function as a microwave and a vent fan? In review, I think I wouldn't like an OTR microwave if me or my family was short, but we are not short. I am also thinking about putting in a bar with bar stools, but I wouldn't do that if we were short either. Maybe when I sell my house, I will keep it off the market for short people (just kidding).

I would be happy to use a shallow countertop model but I can't find any that have convection. Even in the GE Spacesave models, the only one with Convection is the microhood.

My other option is to do a convection microwave hood over the 36" duel fuel DACOR range. I know the 300CFMs that are standard with the microhoods are not enough for this range. I have no hood now, so honestly even 300 might be better than nothing.

We did just that. I have an area that is our coffee/breakfast/snack zone, and we have a microhood mounted under the cabinet. It works just fine. Obviously, it is not vented.

Here is a photo of the area in progress:

We have had guests from out of town, and they have all commented on how "clever" this area is. I am away from home right now, so I cannot post a photo with the granite in and the molding done, but I think you get the general idea.

I have the GE over-the-range microwave and I love it. I do not like microwaves over the oven (too high) and so we had it installed underneath a high cabinet. The micro reach is great!! The countertop is low at around 30". The purpose is that we use the low countertop specifically for appliances such as the crock pot, rice cooker etc (there is almost 15 inches between counter & micro). The steam/smell generated from those appliances go straight up into microwave vent plus we have automatic undermicrowave lighting. I love it!! Check out the pics..

We are also doing exactly that. Ours will be hanging from under a wine rack! We don't have the kitchen in yet so I can't send a pic.
