taking out microwave over stove

I am taking down our microwave and placing it on the counter for now. I don't think I will be able to find the same tile that is used on our backsplash. Any ideas in what to do with the wall behind where the microwave was?

Add shelving (Stainless steel?) to hold olive oil and other cooking stuff. Put beadboard or something behind it.

Tammy, I personally think your idea is a good one. I lived in a custom home-3900 sq. ft. and had my microwave put over the cook top with intention. Loved it!!! Made cooking a breeze. I entertain a lot and have tons of company frequently. It worked well. We're currently building another custom home and I'm putting my microwave back over the stove again. This will be my 3rd microwave over the stove. It is vented outside our home. I have never had problems with this and I've had it for 16 yrs. I think you're a smart cookie making use of the space you have and dressing it up a bit too. I like unusual things and really don't like being like anyone else or having my home look like anyone else's. It's easy to go with the crowd but more fun to stand out and do what you love and what suits you and your style.

Can I use a microwave/hood combo not over the stove?

Hi I have the GE over-the-range microwave and I love it. I do not like microwaves over the oven (too high) and so we had it installed underneath a high cabinet. The micro reach is great!! The countertop is low at around 30". The purpose is that we use the low countertop specifically for appliances such as the crock pot, rice cooker etc (there is almost 15 inches between counter & micro). The steam/smell generated from those appliances go straight up into microwave vent plus we have automatic undermicrowave lighting. I love it!! Reports here support the claim that the recirculating hood system made by Ventahood works adequately. While I don't recall specific comments on it, a Best by Broan recirculating hood is also available and may be adequate. These are going to be relatively expensive because they have to meet the requirements below. Requirements are: sufficient hood aperture to overlap the rising smoke and grease cooking plume (capture), sufficient air flow to keep the collected smoke from reflecting back down into the room (containment), and a filter pack that can remove grease, smoke, and odor from the captured and contained effluent at the air flow rate being used. Less than noxious sound level is also a requirement, but that level is somewhat user dependent.

A large piece of frosted glass? (Altho I love stainless steel, and there are several catalogs that sell self-adhesive "tiles" of it, so it could be a DIY job.)

My sister has a large piece of glass that her kitchen reno team painted (for a reason that I think was the heat factor of the stove, merely putting clear glass over the painted wall wouldn't work).

Is there a utilitarian reason for doing this, or a cosmetic reason? I am just wondering why you would put it on the counter which takes up (in my case) much needed counterspace, and creates a design/cosmetic problem on the wall from which it was removed, plus as mentioned the ventilation factor.
