Chimney hood NOT flanked by cabinetry?

Does anyone have a stainless steel chimney-style hood that stands alone, without wall cabinets on either side? I am not doing wall cabinets on the wall where my gas range will be (about a 12' run). My husband thinks the hood will look silly without cabinetry flanking it. What do you think? There will be a wide window about three feet from one side of the hood, and the wall ends about one foot from the other side of the hood. Does anyone have a photo of a set-up like this? I tried to find a photo in a magazine and on this site, but I couldn't find one. Is this a design no-no?

I have no wall cabinets. I do have open shelves but I'm including some photos of standalone hoods.

Thank you! I notice that there are other design elements to these standalone hoods that make them not appear to be floating in mid-air. The first two kitchens have open shelving and the third one has the accent backsplash surrounded by windows. I suppose I should work something like that into the design.

Sahmmy, if the wood is finished with a good lacquer / varnish, it's not much harder to clean than SS. My cabinets wipe right off :) Rebecca - the biggest benefit of using a cabinet insert is the option to have the hood become "invisible", blending in with the rest of the kitchen. This is the setup we considered, before changing the layout to an island-based setup with an island stainless steel hood (can't hide it on an island, might as well show off then). As far as installation goes, the biggest challenge is keeping track of the dimensions, and making sure everything will physically fit. If you're not sure - call the dealer & double-check that the width, height, and depth of the hood will not interfere with the inside dimensions of the cabinet / custom hood enclosure. This almost tripped us up a couple of times, good thing we checked. Also, get the details on the mounting system - how does it actually attach? Plumbing lines, uncapped electrical wires (i.e., freely hanging), vent ducting opposite what you imagined, to name a few. Until you get that soffit down (a little at a time rather than a plunge), you won't know what's up. I'd hope you at least have some friend with you when doing this to help out. How big is your current vent hood duct aperture? That may help you a little-it's sometimes easier to re-route or re-place a 6" round than a bigger 10". Good luck.

10:07 is our kitchen, and how far up to tile was a hotly contested issue! I pushed for the whole wall but it blew our tile budget, and that's also one of the only parts of the kitchen where we really have wall color. The reason we didn't meet the hood was mostly because ours was a DIY first-time tile job and we weren't confident we could cut the tile to the exact specifications of the hood width without it looking like a hot mess (since our hood is not an even 36"). The gap still bugs me and is the reason we added that utensil bar (which helped a lot, at least for me). So I would either go all the way up or go up to the hood and run it even with that all the way across, I think. That was my first choice for ours--our top shelf is lined up with the edge of the hood, so it would have worked perfectly. HTH!

We did that--only we have a 36" cooktop with a 36" hood. It's large enough between the two cabinets, and the cabinets are not very wide, so that helps with them not looking so crowded. They are also off white, which also helps.

I will say that I am struggling with the imbalanced look in this kitchen. I have moved the clock and hung another chunk of something on the empty wall above. It doesn;t bother me day-to-day, but when I look at pics or think about a backsplash, it bugs me. Better placement/symmetry would have been an improvement, but I had other constraints to deal with on that wall...

Mine is copper, but I don't have cabinets on either side. I love being able to hang artwork on either side and it makes it less kitchen like from great room:
