Sink - does center rear drain work as well as right/left rear?

Getting down to more specifics in my planning, and dh has thrown me for a loop on the cleanup sink.

He originally wanted a double bowl sink but he's changed his mind. Now, he wants a single bowl sink but wants a left or right side drain. Basically he wants to be able to put dishes in the sink without covering the drain.

For the size we require, I can find plenty of rear center drains but no rear right or rear left drains. Looking at a few older threads it seems that most are happy with rear center. Do you find that dishes placed in a rear center drain cover the drain, or is that not a problem?

I have a rear center in a 36" single bowl within a 36" base. I have no problems at all. Originally I wanted a right rear drain but for the style I wanted it would have been cost prohibitive (around 2K). Not only do I have no usage issues; but underneath I have a big a$$ disposable and two trash cans on either side.

Can you please tell me what sink you have? I am also looing for a 36" single bowl sink to fit in 39" base. But cant find anything.

Remodel-mama, I will veer off the subject topic, but you asked...so, in answer to your question, we were all set on stainless steel sink, which is what we had before. Stainless is so practical, and when it's clean, it has a nice sparkle. But, when does it look clean? Only immediately after cleaning,. But then run the water just a second, and you have water spots - or at least we do, our water is just the slightest bit hard. I am tired of looking at how spotted and dingy the stainless sink looks so quickly, Maybe if you have soft water, it's different. Anyway, I had read SO MANY threads on this forum about how great Silgranit is, and people who have been "converted" chiming in that they'd never go back to stainless now that they have Silgranit. So we went to look at some on display at a kitchen/bath showroom, and liked the look. You have to have an open mind though, cause it IS so different from a stainless steel look. I also saw some other granite composite sinks on display at Home Depot, but they didn't seem as nice to me, just my impression. As to our Anthracite color choice, we've gone back and forth over various granites, Bianco Antico, Genesis, Lennon and White Delicatus - all in the white/gray color range. The Silgranit Anthracite color will look striking with any of these. Also, we were concerned that the white or beige Silgranits may show wine stains and the like, though we aren't sure. No matter, we loved how the Anthracite will contrast with the light granite, and have some drama with our cherry cabinets. Thanks, Vith. The goal is to gain counter space to one side of the existing sink cabinet, and I thought we might gain enough by shifting the sink cabinet as far to one side as the existing plumbing (inflows) allows. We may end up moving plumbing anyway, but we're on a tight budget so I was looking at less costly options. But if I understand correctly, you're saying the drain could still be in the center of the sink; is that right? I like the fact that an offset drain allows you to empty the strainer without removing, say, a large baking sheet from the sink, so I may opt for the offset drain anyway. I thought it might also simplify the under-sink plumbing as well.

You have a shut off valve for hot and cold under the sink. You can adjust how open they are and make the "full blast" not as powerful. Will save water also. Useful for when the faucet puts out more water than what the drain can handle as well.

I have a 32" single bowl with a rear center drain. This sink comes with a grid which negates the issue of stuff sitting in the sink covering the drain. I love the grid. Just the other day I had some squash from the garden sitting in the bottom of the sink waiting for attention when I needed to wash out a pan. The sink is large enough that I could wash at opposite end and pour wash water down the drain, all without disturbing the squash.

The advantage of a side drain is that the plumbing underneath takes up space at one side vs. the middle of your under sink cabinet.

rear center drain is OK. Even in a smaller size.

They're both fine. It's really personal preference. We went with right drain. But it's cast iron, not SS.

I have a rear center drain and I strongly prefer this over a drain off to one side. I tend to multitask in our sink, and the drain is central to the activities. I can have a pan of dishwater on one side, veggies draining in the colander on the other side, and the drain free in the middle for dumping pasta water or running water to rinse a knife or vegetables. A drain off to the side would be blocked more often than my back center drain. The only time the center drain is blocked is when I have really large things in the sink, like fridge shelves or drawers. But it's much better to have the drain placed well for 95% of my kitchen tasks than for the rarer 5%.

I agree that a grid is helpful.

Our sink is 30" wide and our cabinet is 36" wise. We don't have a gd. I like having the plumbing in the middle--it frees up the usable space so that it is either behind left door or right door. Our compost is behind the left door and other supplies are behind the right door.
