Where to buy Kraftmaid in NYC?

I think (hope) the insanity is drawing to a close. I have had *such* a hard time picking cabinets.

THE SAGA: I started with Hanssem, which I liked for the door style and for being frameless, but hated (hated!) the (maple) finishes. I gave up on frameless and went to Medallion - loved the stories here about how good Medallion quality is, and I'm able to get a good price on them. But - you guessed it - don't care for the finishes. Really *tried* to like them - spent tons of time staring at them - but couldn't come up with one that would work for me. (Wheat ended up coming close, but it looks too much like natural and I want some color.)

Meanwhile, every time I walk into a Home Depot, I am drawn to the Kraftmaid Ginger Glaze sample kitchen. (Every HD and Lowe's seems to have one.) Not sure if that color would actually work in my tiny galley kitchen, or if it would go with my chosen countertop (Zodiaq Smokey Topaz), nor do I want to pay the 15% upcharge for it (15%!!!).

So the closest finish with no upcharge is Toffee - I saw a sample kitchen in Toffee in the Lowe's in Brooklyn, and it's quite nice (if a little boring), and it'll look great with the Smokey Topaz (much better than the greyish formica they paired it with - I have to say, I think the HD sample kitchen designers are much better than the Lowe's ones!).

SO - after making myself (and my poor mom in FL) insane about this for *weeks* - I've decided on Kraftmaid Toffee.

The question then is where should I buy it? My choices here in NYC seem to be either HD (very convenient), Lowe's (not so convenient), Expo (also not convenient), or an independent dealer located in a lumber store in the West 40's in Manhattan. (Maybe there are others?) Given the stories I've heard about quality control issues with Kraftmaid, who is more likely to give me better service? Would anyone have a specific recommendation for a dealer?

Call Tarallo Kitchens in the Bronx.
Ask to speak to Lee Taylor (friendly and knowledgeable) They have a large showroom and one of their lines is Kraftmaid.

Tarallo is in business 25 years, Not fly by night.

If you want they will also do the installation which means you don't pay tax for the cabinets and installation.

It is called a Master Capital Improvemnt.

They will do the measuring. They travel everywhere to do it.
They take credit cards, etc. Tarallo is easy to deal with.

Tell Lee you were referred by Susan Miller-Stern from Modern Life Interiors
She might give you a discount as well.

They also carry Plain and Fancy, Apple Valley (used to be Les Care) and several others.

Parking is easy there and also public transportation is good too.

There prices are excellent.

We got the Kraftmaid Ginger Glaze in Cherry in a tiny kitchen and love them - we went with a lighter countertop and it balances out nicely.

We bought ours from Just Cabinets - they were much cheaper than HD or Lowes if you are willing to take a drive (make sure to set an appointment and confirm before going).

Welcome to NYC! Before anyone can recommend plants, we'll need some more information. How big is the balcony? What direction does it face? Does it get sun any direct sun? How many hours? What floor are you on? Is it windy? Is it somewhat protected by a wall, neighbor's balcony, etc? This info - especially the sun - will make it easier for people to make suggesions that will work for you.

OK - not to hijack this thread - but I just have to say that my experience so far with Lowe's and Kraftmaid has been GREAT. Affer I placed my order at Lowe's I read a thread on here that had me scared to death I had made a terrible decision. I actually haven't read much positive feedback on Kraftmaid here so I wanted to put in my two cents. I had gone through several KD's, then basically took the design I liked best to Lowe's and had them order the cabinets according to the design I brought. It was a very large order as we will have a pretty big kitchen when this is all done. (combining 2 rooms) Anyway, we are smack in the middle of our remodel now. Our Lowe's kitchen cabinet guy warned me that it was more likely than not that some cabinets would arrive damaged, but that he could get a replacement within 2 weeks, so not to panic. I level set my expectations to expect this. All of the base cabinets have been installed, and they all look great! We had a few small problems - a few drawer fronts had the wrong style front on them, and some trim that wasn't finished right. But no scratches, dents, or anything like that. I am guessing that all Lowe's are not like this - but the cabninet guy has come to my house several times to "check on the installation" (even though our installer is not affilated with Lowe's at all) - and when he saw the small problems he immediately went back and ordered replacements, no questions asked, I don't even have to send back the wrong fronts, or take picures, or anything. And he has the Kraftmaid rep coming to my house next week to look at the problems with the trim to see if he can finish it on site - but the Lowe's guy went ahead and ordered replacements to be on the safe side. So, so far so good for Kraftmaid. I haven't seen the uppers yet, they are stacked in my garage in a way that I can't really get to them until they take them out to install them. But I'm less worried about those, at least by that point I will have the granite in and can get my kitchen in "working" order.

No, the small trays they had are still larger than the ones in your link. They looked more like 2x2 per cell but definitely not the typical 6 cell. I use those in your link for starting mine but then transplant to 4" pots. Yes, they had lots of hot peppers out! Mostly hot peppers actually. I don't grow hot peppers so can't help you with types they had (other than habanero haha!) but probably 5 or 6 varieties from memory. All the vendors had hot peppers, most had other varieties too. The California Wonder I only saw from the one vendor. If you are familiar with the layout, the seedling vendors all seem to be on the northern leg of the "L" shape market layout- along 17th street. This particular vendor was on the furthest east stand (nearest Park ave) on the side furthest from 17th street. Hope that makes sense. Shouldn't be a problem in any event, lots of them selling today and I imagine more on Friday.

I buy from local plant stores, neighborhood plant sales and the Green Markets throughout the city. However I recommend buying seeds online. I try to grow from seed when possible. There's something about seeing the seeds grow into plants indoors when it's cold outside. Also, buying seeds gives you more options and varieties than what you can purchase as plants at local stores. My two favorite online sources are: sample seeds seeds now (esp. the free shipping offers)

Ginger Glaze in cherry - that must be beautiful! Hmmm... have to see what these other places charge for the upcharge...

Gitananoel, THANK YOU for that referral to Lee at Tarallo Kitchens! Lee is terrific, and the prices are good. Very good, actually, if I can get in on this Kraftmaid promotion that's going on - have to finalize the order by 8/24. Wish me luck!!!

I bought my Kraftmaid cabs at the Long Island City Home Depot (Senora style, maple, in Honey Spice) and am very happy with them.

I am a new york city girl who knows her way around. It is good to know you were pleased with Lee Taylor. She knows her stuff.

If you shop cabinets there and let them install there is no tax involved/

It has nothing to do with Tarallo. It is the law. There is a simple form to fill out. It is good to know honest people in business. It makes life friendlier and easier.

Tax alone is expensive in ny for any purchase. Why not learn the ropes and get a legal break too?

In New York City knowledge is power.

In westchester there is a nice park called caramoor and they give beaurtiful concerts on their lawn
Nothing like culture.
