LP gas users, opinions please

We want to go with gas for our new kitchen but it has to be LP. I understand there are issues with that, so I'm asking for range recommendations. It will have to be a 30" and not in the high-end category. At this point I'm considering Electrolux and Kitchen Aid. What do you have, and are you pleased with the performance?

I have LP and don't have any issues. The range usually has to be site converted from gas to LP, but that is not difficult. I've been very pleased with mine. My father has regular gas and I honestly can't tell the difference.

I just ordered a 30" all gas Bertazzoni on Tuesday. The store is converting to LP for me and they will be delivering next week. Bertazzoni is having a $200 rebate in my area right now and they are priced under $3000 for all gas.

I was hoping to get a factory tuned LP because they are supposed to be better (no loss of BTU's) but the Berta is not supposed to be compromised by the conversion to LP.

I have never had gas at my home, only cooked on it at my Mom's and I'm excited to finally be rid of the electric.

I used induction for over a year (Miele 36" cooktop). I moved to Seattle and the home I am renting (and leaving) has a Kitchen Aid 6 burner gas cooktop. I hate it. I cannot get a true simmer and had to buy an induction hob. No one should be using a round wok to stir fry, so that is not an issue. Check America's Test Kitchen results on using a wok. For me gas totally sucked. It takes forever to boil water - over 10 minutes compared to On gas, I have two size "burners". Smaller flame or wider flame. You have to put it on high to cover your pan for even heating then everything burns, so you have to keep it small. On induction, you just match the pan to the ring size and everything is perfect - very low simmer to fast boiling. Induction also conducts up the sides of the pot and the handles don't get hot. I have to use a pot holder just to stir food with gas. Making Bernaise without a double boiler is a snap. Plus the sauce thickens better getting heat from the sides at the same temperature as the bottom. Maybe other gas ranges are better, compared to this crappy Kitchen Aid (the DW, Wall Ovens, & Fridge also suck). Renting new home in a couple months.

Self-cleaning works very well, with absolutely no problems on the Wolf DF 30-inch range. I've used it many, many times in the 4+ years I've had my range. As a result, my oven looks new. I can't imagine having a self-cleaning function in the range, and not using it. The range comes with full extension rack on the bottom, which tracks along the oven door for additional support. This rack is very nice when removing heavy roasts from the oven. Sounds as if you've not seen the Wolf range in person, so you can fully observe and assess what they have. I recommend you do that, because I think that will make up your mind for you. Another feature of the Wolf, aside from its great performance in cooking/roasting/baking is the superb quality of construction, and the attention paid to finishing detail. You should physically examine every range you're considering so you can sort out what is important to you, and what's not. With a Wolf, you will never have to worry about unfinished edges, or sharp edges, etc. I also recommend you take the time/make the effort to make an appointment to visit your area SubZero/Wolf regional distributor so you can see all of the products in person, AND so you can attend the cooking demonstrations on the Wolf, so you can see for yourself how the range works, how the cook top works, etc. These are free sessions, and are very helpful in giving practical info on the range to help you decide whether this is the range for you.

I think the kitchen layout still needs work. You're going to walk back and forth constantly around that little island, and people who want to cut through the kitchen are going to zig-zag through your work area. I've attached a sketch of a more simple floorplan that I think is better for several reasons -- sorry I scanned it sideways: - Your major work triangle is enclosed in an efficient area. - People can walk straight through the kitchen without interrupting your work. - You still have your penninsula seating and open area facing the window. - You have a long, uniterrupted bank of cabinets "behind you" that'll be good for things you don't necessarily need right at hand: Your stand mixer, a bowl of fruit or cake, the microwave. - You could gain more counterspace by moving the refrigerator to this "back wall". - You could flip-flop this and have the "back wall" to the left, if that makes more sense to you. Negatives: - You have two blind corners, which are problematic and sometimes expensive. I'd consider having one open into the casual dining area, perhaps for outdoor cooking utensils. - Your stove is still on an interior wall; thus, venting will be more difficult.

Loobab, Thank you :)I am glad you like it. My husband and I were watching a young lady making one similar to this, and we just couldn’t leave without buying one. I love the idea about posting a thread when I am all settled and everything is out of the box, but I am not sure. I am quite a private person and don’t feel too comfortable posting photos of my home on public forums (I do admire and I am very grateful to those who do). thanks for the responses. Sue, what brand is your stove? I was originally looking at a GE Cafe (great price on a floor model) - but found out it has too much BTU loss.

I don't think I will be much help, but our 1931 Chambers was converted to use LP gas - I love cooking on it! However, always having had an electric before I couldn't tell you if there was a difference between the natural & propane.

Ge offers their Monogram cooktop in a LP model. It came already ready to hook up to the propane. I really really love cooking on it!! No issues at all.

I have the Electrolux LP range, I find it fine to cook on. Some people told me I wouldn't like that the oven heat was too "wet" for pastry, I haven't had a problem, the pie crusts come out flaky, not wet.
I spoke to a couple of chefs here who have to cook with propane, they just laughed when I asked if propane was a problem.

I got a 30" NXR. It has no BTU loss if the LP conversion is done by the factory or distributor. They can't guarantee that if you have it done on-site because each one of the little orifices has to be properly aligned or something, and it gets messed up often.

My range has 4x 15,000 BTU stacked burners and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I was also looking at the GE cafe but I didn't care for the fragile-looking electronic control module, nor the BTU loss, nor the price!! My NXR DRGB3001 was $1899 including the LPG conversion, ready to install. I could not be more pleased with the performance so far!!!!!

mfrog, I'm glad you like your electrolux. I was originally thinking of getting the dual fuel, but then when I realized that I rarely ever bake, it didn't seem worthwhile! I'm mostly thinking of the cooktop; in other words, I will like to be able to get a nice simmer or a good hot, high flame when needed. If the electrolux does a good job, I may go with that. DH just loves the features in that oven!

Anybody else weigh in?

My rangetop is a Viking. I've heard people talk about loss of btus, but I have yet to learn what they really means in terms of usage. Maybe if you frequently boil huge pots of water (lobster business?) you would notice it. The Viking seems fast enough to me. 90% of what I do I don't go over medium. When I boil water I have to turn it down to med/high after it reaches a boil or it inevitably boils over.

wow, that NXR sure looks nice! I hadn't heard of it, so I just checked AJ Madison, but it looks like it only comes in a manual clean, which for me is sort of a deal breaker.

I also agree about the electronics. I get nervous with all the electronics on appliances today. I would love a gas stove with just knobs! (but I need that self-cleaning feature).

Yup, manual clean only. I think that's pretty standard for simple (non-electronic-moduled) AG ranges till you get up to the reaaaaalllly pricey ones. My dad has a Wolf and it's manual clean! It's worth the trade-off for me. I lived on a boat for 2 years with a tiny LP oven/stove that of course was manual clean, and it really wasn't such a big deal (and I *really* cook a lot in my kitchen so things do get very dirty!) The NXR has a sexy blue enamel interior... not sure if that will be harder or easier to clean than my stainless boat oven interior.

My only complaint with the Electrolux would be the simmer burner isn't quite low enough. I am going to get the guy to come back & adjust it, I've talked to him on the phone, he said he'd never heard of someone wanting the simmer to be really, really low.
