How to Green Clean the Kitchen Table?

As prices increase, our retirement cottage decreases; we're down to 680 s.f. So, the kitchen table will double as a kitchen counter, folding table for laundry, repository for grocery bags when arriving home, and sorting spot for mail. I'm worried about how to clean -- free of germs -- the table for the food prep and eating.

Today I never put grocery bags on my counter tops because of places those bags rest between store and home: station wagon where dirty dog paws reside and, often, ground, in between trips. Mail never enters the kitchen. Oh, think of all the hands that have handled it! Yeck!

I thought about going the scrubbed pine route, but I wouldn't be happy with the roughness of the table. I'm a clean green machine, so furniture usually gets oil cleaned, but I can't see where that is going to rid the table top of bug growth.

Any ideas?
