I really hate to see the walk in pantry go, and I think one of your priorities was more counter workspace? This one seems short on that to me. A lot of your counter is very shallow, and some shallow pantry is useful, but not for everything.

I've thought before that a foot or foot and a half added to the entry would likely be a good investment since the feeling and mood created on first entering a home are so significant. And still think that.

However, as far as the kitchen itself in this plan goes, I don't think it's nearly as good as earlier versions for a variety of reasons. Very large among them is that the increased width actually becomes a liability as increased walking space between the two main sides of the kitchen. Virtually all benefit of the added width has been invested in the doorway from the entry. Even worse is that virtually all work would take place on the short stretch of counter between the stove and sink, at least that's where I'd end up, with that stretch by the fridge a thing-collecter.

I almost always agree with Rhome, but I don't remember the walk-in pantry at the moment. Tucked into a corner right by your work area, so well worth the investment of space? As to getting it back, that might be nice; but from experience I'll do a little root for the excellent function and space-maximizing ability of shallow full-wall pantries--with an additional foot or two of deeper storaqe somewhere definitely.

Rhome, here is pic of the reworked pantry, well not actually a walkin anymore, but it still has lots of useable storage. Do you think a wall pantry on a corner is useable or lost space for the goods on the sides and way back?

I like it, but instead of going with a corner pantry that looks like it will waste a lot of space, what about framing in a real walk-in pantry closet with a door on it? The door would be a regular pre-hung door and could be located where the angled pantry cabinet now sits.

I am looking forward to seeing the wider version, but agree with ccoombs1 that it appears you could build a rectangular pantry where you now show the pantry cabs...About 3 1/2' x 6' inside with the doorway facing the table/90 degrees to the oven. That's depending on some extra width so you can still get past the micro counter and fridge.

Is this the kind of pantry you meant? Does this plan alleviate the issues of too many doors (near the frig and the entry into the garage)?

In this plan the wall oven can go next to the baking center, or it can be placed next to the pantry, but underneath the cabinet. I like the idea of an oven that is easy to see into, especially for baking.

I like this layout, but is it too modern a design in a 1950 ranch to have an angled pantry?

I actually meant making the pantry without the cut off angle, so that the door would face at us in that last rendering. I am more into squared off than angled, but can see how this works better for easy access from fridge/micro area, and keeps the room feeling more opened up, too. As I write, I am more and more in favor of the angle.

Any chance of going to shallower base cabs on the garage side of the fridge so you can take that counter all the way to the wall?

Hope it is not improper to begin a new thread, I have 2 plans that just might work, so I'm asking everyone for their imput, again.

Is this what you were thinking of for the pantry entry?

Yes, that's what I meant, but it puts too much closed in wall right across from the micro counter.

I like the last one before that (with the walk through pantry between kitchen and garage) but make sure the pantry is wide enough to have 16-18" shelves on one side and room for you to walk into it, too. Do you have room to make it 4 1/2 or 5 ft wide? If not, I might stick to the corner pantry plan.

On the one with the corner pantry, can you put counter or a tall cabinet between the micro cabinet and the garage wall where you now show a space?

What is the minimum amount of space needed for me to walk in the pantry, and pull things off the shelves? Is 2 ft.(for me to walk in) plus shelving enough?

I know most of my pantry items--the old shaped, not frequently used items seem to all be large (huge soup pot, old bread machine, which is still used weekly, DH's crock pot which is never used, but you never know when he may start cooking, and my very favorite--his humongous juice man thing.

OK back to measuring. And I'll try to fit in some cupborad behind the garage door when it is open.

Last, do you think the angled pantry gives more useable counter space (for 2 working at the same time), or is it a draw?

I think what keeps them from being a 'draw' in counter space is the cabinets that come down to the counter in the corner pantry plan.

I don't think 2 ft is enough for a walkway into the pantry. I'd prefer 3 ft. 30" might be my minimum. Try to mock it up for yourself to see, but it'll only be helpful if you can emulate the depth of the pantry, because I think the farther in you go, the tighter it will seem, and be more difficult to turn around and get out of there with whatever you're retrieving.
