backsplash is in! tile above the window?

My new backsplash is in. I got a "mirrored obsidian black" tile from the Big O and LOVE it. It looks like a grey, but its mirrored black. I have just enough left-over to tile above the window and think I should. When I say just enough, I mean I will have just a handful of chips leftover.

(I realize the pics might have been a tad better if I'd turned off some of the xenons first.)

I had decided not to tile up there, but its the only blue on the cabinet section of the wall, and I think it will look more finished. A single small tile turned linear will just fit between the cabinet and window frame.

I would love some window treatment ideas also... which is what led me to the decision to add the tile around the rest of the window. This window faces east so will catch a lot of morning sun. Further down that wall is a sliding glass door also. And I'd love some treatment ideas for a slider.

That is gorgeous tile. I am not good about the rest so will wait and see what the "experts" say. But it looks great so far. c

Here's a rough photoshop; I like it above the window. Is there a little space around the window? Can you tile that? It looks very narrow. Picture didn't work and it's been awhile since I posted a picture and I have to run or I'd look up the "how to". You can click on this and it will take you to the picture.

rjpjnk, thank you. That is a stainless brick pattern tile. We bought it from a seller through Amazon.com. We received it in less than a week, paid around $25 per SF including shipping, and paid no tax. Here is a different picture showing ours at the ceiling. Since the cabinets go all the way up there really isn't much to see, it just ends at the ceiling. Since your cabinets don't go all the way up, you should look at Kris_ma's backsplash. She has window's on either side of her hood, and she took it all the way up, but not above the windows. I think it looks super slick. we did this in our butler's pantry area, mainly because we couldn't decide on how to 'finish' the tile if we used the subways on the side walls and there was a gap we had to hide (blah!). but, I think it worked out well!

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

If I understand correctly, the wall cabinets on the sink wall will be replaced. Give that, I would run the tile to the ceiling, like the range wall

That is very cool tile - I love how it looks! What does the rest of the kitchen look like? I prefer the window with the paint above - I think with the tile above it your eye will be drawn to it automatically because it stands out so much. I don't think the paint above the window looks odd at all, and especially when you see the whole kitchen with other parts painted, I'm sure you won't notice it at all. I vote for keeping the paint!

Paint. The tile makes me want to look at the top of the window. And you will still have a window treatment. Just paint. I saw some Roman slat shades on this forum a few months ago......I wish I knew who so I could show you. That's a cute window. If all you need is sunshade I would consider one of those solar shades. Mine are the simple on a roller kind because they are behind sheers and drapes but I know they come in all different styles. I got the smoke color. At the time they were in an amber, too, but I thought that was too yellow for my peachy colored L.R.

LOVE the tile!!!! It's awesome!

I like the tile above the window--very dramatic--but, I think I like the paint above the window better.

I like the tile above the window, as long as the upper cabinets extend to the ends of the walls.

I would "lightly" glaze five or so diagonal strips on existing paint color in a grey or silvery shade or metallic. It will look like fashionable wallpaper, take no time to do and itÂs cheap.

Nice tile! It looks great. I would take a window treatment up very high, mounted at the ceiling, and not do the tile up there. I agree that the tile pulls your eye up there.

You could use a bamboo roman shade. Or if you feel you need some fabric in the room, that would work too, but consider mounting them up high, gives the window a great look.

Wow, that tile just makes the granite and cabinets POP!

I like the roman shade suggestion too... something with vertical stripes, and the top all the way up at the ceiling.
