Thank you for the pics! Follow up question... if the cabinets on either side of the hood do not extend all the way up to the ceiling, but have crown molding, should I stop the tile at the top of the cabinets, or go ahead up to the ceiling. I'd like to post a pic of the 3D rendering we have, but don't know how. (Apologies again for the Newbie-ness.)

Think cat mom's went up to the ceiling even though her cabinets on each side did not. However she did not have crown molding. Maybe if you post a picture you will get some good advice/suggestions.

Our cabs on either side of the range do not go up to the ceiling (our ceiling is vaulted; the cabs along the original height section at 8 ft, go up to the ceiling). chris45ny is correct, we don't have any molding on top of the cabs. Our tile does go up to the ceiling behind the range/hood only.

Figured out how to post my 3D drawing... nothing is set in stone yet...thank you for any advice you can give. I am having a lot of trouble because no one is really "holding my hand" on this, and I have zero experience in this. This site has been invaluable and we haven't even broken ground yet!

Hi Lisa, my chimney hood is a Zephyr Savona 30", with a 685 cfm blower, 2 halogen lights and 3 speeds. It's fairly quietly except on the highest speed and so far I really like it. Check online for the best prices. I bought mine from US Appliance.

I'll try and attach the link to my latest favorite inspiration room. They've done a good job with the tiling.

The tiling is our next step. How did you handle this with the hood? Did you just use a masonry bit and drill through the tile where necessary to fit the attachment points for the hood?

In my case, my contractor installed the hood first and then tiled around it.

another option is to just tile to the bottom of the hood.

DH bought special drill bits to drill through the glass tile, and drilled into them very slowly and carefully. Took hours it seemed. Shortly thereafter, our plumber came to install the pot filler faucet. Zip, Zip, Zip with the drill, right through the tile, and he was done!

I like your range backsplash. Is that a stainless panel with a brick pattern? Where did you get it?

In my case, I have 9 foot ceilings, and the cabinets only go up to 8 feet. I am trying to decide whether to do a chimney style hood or have a cabinet over the hood. If I go with the chimney, should the backsplash stop at the top of the cabinets or continue to the ceiling? Since your photo does not show the ceiling I can't tell what you did.

rjpjnk, thank you. That is a stainless brick pattern tile. We bought it from a seller through Amazon.com. This is the link we bought from:

Non of my local stores had the tile in stock, yet they all wanted to charge me $40+ per SF. We received it in less than a week, paid around $25 per SF including shipping, and paid no tax.

Here is a different picture showing ours at the ceiling. Since the cabinets go all the way up there really isn't much to see, it just ends at the ceiling.

Since your cabinets don't go all the way up, you should look at Kris_ma's backsplash. She has window's on either side of her hood, and she took it all the way up, but not above the windows. I think it looks super slick. A picture of her backsplash is in the linked thread below:
