Raised panel inset cabinets - please help with drawer

I am looking at StarMark inset cabinets which have a choice of 5 inset doors. While I have drooled over many of the wonderful inset kitchens on the FKB site, most are shaker style. That style just wouldn't look right in my little house, a 1938 Colonial.

I like the raised panel door and it would fit with my house the best, but I'm not sure which drawer would look the best. My choices are a modifed shaker, a partial raised panel or slab. The cabinets will be a creamy white finish which is a very, very close match to my White Dove trim. While it will be more upkeep, I will have beaded inset doors and drawers. There will be 3 cabinets that only have drawers.

I don't have a picture of door with the slab drawer.

I guess I'm afraid that having a drawer front that sticks up out of the rest of the cabinet might look odd.

Hello katsmah, I love your house - it is charming and also very welcoming too!

I also like raised panel doors and have had to make decisions about the drawer style - I agree with your last comment too about the raised panel on the drawer front. If it were my kitchen I would choose the slab front drawer,- at least for the small, top drawers - looking at your 2nd photo, all of the top drawers would be slab. I have looked at so many kitchens, showrooms, photos etc and I think the slab drawer above the raised panel is very nice. It's simple, and classic (to me anyway) and allows the raised panel on the doors to really stand out. Otherwise I think it becomes quite busy. Especially with having beaded inset rather than square inset. Of course, it is personal opinion.

On the cabinets where you have only drawers you could choose to have a different front on the larger, bottom drawers - the modified shaker that you show above looks nice. I think having different panels can look nice - as long as not too many in a small space.
I wish I knew how to post pics - I've got a bunch. I'll take a look and see if I can find those instructions to post photos. But the link below is for Crown Point Cabinetry's door styles. 2nd row is Raised Panel - check out the green one marked "Classic". If you haven't looked at that site - it gives lots of inspiration. On the bottom of that page they have their drawer fronts too.

Ditto - we did the beaded inset slab drawers for the top skinny drawers and the beaded inset raised panel drawers for the bottom bigger drawers. Not installed yet, so no pictures. Good luck with your decision.

I would imagine the biggest difference is in the depth (up & down) of drawers since frameless don't have the stiles across. On my bank of Brookhaven (frameless) four drawers, the top drawer is shallowest at about 3.5" deep. The next two drawers are about 4" and the bottom is about 9.5" deep. They are 19.75" front to back, and on a 23" wide custom cab, the width is about 19 7/8", so I suppose a regular 24" cab would be 20 7/8" on the inside. I really can't vouch for the accuracy of the top drawer depth, but on the three drawer bank, the depth of the bottom two drawers is 10.25". The sides and back do not go all the way up, but that hasn't been a problem. Full extension drawers are definitely worth having. We don't have soft close which I don't regret. But full extension means full use, and I wish that I had that feature on every single drawer in the house. What a difference!

Inset is always framed...if there were no frame it couldn't be inset! Frameless means you only have two sides & a back to the cabinet, no front "frame" (Of course you also have a bottom!) The drawer size depends on... How wide the frame is Type of drawer glide (bottom or side) [If side, you lose drawer width; if bottom, you lose drawer height] thickness of drawer walls Calculate the drawer width by.... Width of cabinet - width of frame x 2 - thickness of drawer walls x 2 - glide clearance (if side glides) OR Width of cabinet - width of frame x 2 - thickness of drawer walls x 2 - drawer clearance to clear the cabinet frame (if bottom glides) The question with inset is not how wide is too wide, but rather how narrow is too narrow b/c you've lost so much in frame/glides/clearance. BTW...you also lose drawer height b/c of the frame b/w drawers. The Finished Kitchens Blog (FKB) has kitchens with inset cabinets. Click on the "FKB Categories" link in the navigation panel on the right of the FKB page. It will take you to a page listing the various categories kitchens fall into...scroll down to "Special Features" and click on the link that says "Inset Doors". I have a 3/4" slab panel on my Monogram. Looking at it, I don't see why it couldn't be done inset. Are your cabinets custom? The trick would be to make the opening the correct size, with a stop rail inside of the stiles for the panel. The overall size would have to be a litle bit bigger than the drawer ordinarily calls for. I guess what I mean is that there would be a box inside the cabinet frames to hold the warming drawer, and the WD panel would overlay the interior box and be flush with the framing of the cabinetry. Additionally, in the Appliance forum, before I bought mine, there was a lot of discussion about the depth of warming drawers and obstacles to getting the panels flush. There are some brands that do better than others. I think it was the Miele that admitted that the panel would stick out. I know when I was at the Miele showroom they said that one would have to cut down the depth of the panel for a standard installation flush mount. I mentioned all this to my cabinetmaker, and he said, "Of course!" That all the panels and doors (everything but the ovens) would make my cabinets 25" deep overall. I don't know if that's just his standard, or if that's something about panels, or what. The WD was installed by his foreman and was no trouble.

lblue, sorry I didn't check in at all yesterday, then tried to post a reply but it didn't go through. Sorry, I am just now getting what you are asking! I was assuming that by rails you meant the vertical part of the frame that affects the overall width. The frame is 2" on either side. What you are calling the rail is 2.25" on either side. The panels on the doors are 7", for a total width of 11.5" on each door, and 25" for the entire cabinet including frame. (I only counted the left side, since on the drawings the right rail is considered part of the next cabinet.) Am I now understanding you correctly? If you can get your frames down to 1.5", you will have more width for the panels. FWIW, I like the way it looks. In fact, the next cabinet over, the tall one to the counter, has 10.5" doors and I like the way that one looks too. They don't look too skinny to my eye.

I went with a cherry raised panel door with applied moulding on my perimeter cabinets. The drawer choice I went with is not my favorite, but my husband wanted this one. I would have preferred the drawer with the applied moulding. Anyway, I did go with just the slab drawer front on my island. Although the island is not inset like my permiter cabinetry, you can see the difference in looks if you page through my cabinet photos. The nice thing about a slab drawer is that you aren't limited on hardware choices or placement. Ultimately, go with your gut. Good luck!

Amarantha thank for for the link to the Crown Point photos, it helped a lot. I think having the setup the same as that "Classic" door style with the slab drawer will look the best. My kitchen is small and it might get busy looking if I attempt to add that other style of drawer.
