island pendant light switch

Contractor says light switch for pendants is usually on the island. I thought it should be on the wall as you enter the kitchen. Where did you put your switch?

On the wall(s) as you enter the kitchen.

In my kitchen the pendant light switch is actually in the wallspace in the entry right before the kitchen. Thus, it IS possible to have it in another location other than on the island.

Thank you the layout helps. If I were to be greedy I would say put switches in all 3 spots! If I could only pick two, I would pick the spot where you enter the room (upper right) and somewhere on the table side of the kitchen, like the spot where your pantry switch is. And just so I understand correctly -- is the upper right where you would enter if coming from outside, and the door near the pantry where you would enter if coming from inside the house? (e.g., in the morning when it's dark and you haven't had your coffee yet... which way do you come in? You'll want a switch near there I think.) If your main access all the time is through the upper right, I still think it would be nice to have a control near the table since the island lighting is close to the table area. I don't know if it's possible or practical to have a switch in the island itself, like in the space near where your MW is, on the table side. If it is possible I think that would be handy.

I don't have pendents or recessed lighting - so no help there, but if you don't have under cabinet lighting, add that to your list. My under cabinet lighting is the most helpful lighting I have. At a guess, I would say 2 pendants over the island, but your lighting store should also be able to help you. It depends on what you use and if your recessed lights light up the island - then pendants aren't necessary. Change out the track light over the sink for sure.

I have the same pendants as @mihelene. I have NO issues with glare although plenty of folks on this site warned about that and said it would be a problem ----- it has not been. I will second, though, that they do have to be cleaned regularly and that is another task to keep up on; although I often wonder if I had something not clear, surely it would be getting just as dirty and need cleaning.....? Maybe I should just feel grateful that my lights make me keep a cleaner house. ;) Also, it seems to me that the height of your ceiling isn't such an issue as the height the pendants are recommended to be hung is 30-36" above your counter top regardless of what height your ceiling is. I have 9' ceilings and my globes are about 15.5" long. I don't think an 8' ceiling would be a problem. (My sister in law has 8' ceilings and she just installed fixtures similar to your posted picture. They seem bigger than mine (perhaps just in width) and they look good.)

Same as leela4 - on the wall at both entrances to the kitchen. I talked at length with my contractor and electrician and we all agreed the wall was the best place.

Just had mine finished this week. On the wall at the entrance to the kitchen. I have never seen them on an Island.

My island switch is in the hallway right before the kitchen, but it can also be controlled at the sink (for dimming etc). HTH

My pendant light switch is on the end of the island, along with the switch for my undercabinet lighting. My wall switches by the doors operate the recessed cans and other lights, and I didn't want a big banks of switches there. It has worked well for us.

On the island for us. Too many other switches on our wall, so this eliminated the guesswork.

Ours is a 3-way (DH is a 3-way freak), with switches as you come into kitchen both sides: mudroom, and LR.
I suggested "on the Island" as a second choice, and it was one of those E.F. Hutton moments - everyone froze, and turned to me with one of *those* looks.....

LOL whiskers! Those moments are kinda scary for me.

Mine will be on a 3-way (like most every other switch in the main living spaces) on the side of the fireplace as you enter the kitchen and by the door to the deck next to the kitchen. I have too many switches and not enough walls in the reno to make any of my switching easy to figure.

Our peninsula pendants are switched on either end of the peninsula. Dimmer is on the wall; regular switch is on the end, right above the shelves with pills and wine :-)....
