Help -Runaway 'Paint' Train- Have to choose wht cab color tonite!

I will spare you the gory details of why I am in the position of choosing a color by tomorrow morning; I have been trying to sort thru the posts regarding white cabinet colors. My head is spinning...

I will have all white Kitchen Aid appliances, black matte tile countertops, and my backsplash will be a mix of solid greens and blues that are kind of on the cool side.

What I'm looking for is a shade of white that will add some warmth to the mix and go well with my white appliances. I'm ok with a creamy or leaning-toward-tan color, but I want the overall look to say white cabinets.

So, do you have white appliances and painted cabs that look great together?

I have the BM Off-White Colors fan and the ICI Colors fan. The paint has to be ICI, but I can have them match a BM color, I'm told.

Have you checked the Finished Kitchens Blog? One of the cabinet color categories is "White/Cream". You may find several kitchens w/similar colors.

Thanks, yes I have been thru the various blogs. I was hoping to come up w a 'short list' of actual paint colors with which people have had success. So many of the blog colors are stock cabinet colors that don't translate to actual paint colors. It looks as if I'll be throwing a dart...

I don't normally like this look, only because I think in ten years it's going to be really easy to date a kitchen from about 2003 to 2010 by the colored island contrasting the cabs.....but in a period home I feel totally different about it, especially for islands because they didn't exist when the home was built. In a local home here (about 1870) they have done three different paint colors on their cabs in milk paint, and it has a very unfitted look for a basically fitted kitchen because they have used multiple cabinet styles. The main style is a simple shaker but mixed in are a couple of hutch looking areas done in fancier cabs so they look like they migrated to the kitchen over time (both are different) then there is their fabulous island which they did in quarter sawn oak, built in a mission style like a large bureau. It workls perfectly to enhance the feel of their period home, which they are restoring very true to it's original feel. The hutch cabs have reclaimed marble tops from other pieces long gone and they are about an inch below the main counter. The other counters are wood aside from the zinc in the butlers pantry and the island is soapstone. I love the way they were inspired by a period look but made it functional and expect to be doing something similar in my 1889 home. I'm expecting to paint one island and do the other in wood to resemble an old store counter (likely in oak) but will be doing the sink in a different style with distressed paint (to look like a dry sink) and the hutch will be in antique pine. It sounds busy if you think of your kitchen in a 2000 way, but in a turn of the previous century way that's exactly what a kitchen looked like. So my vote is...yes to the painted island, but if you really want to enhance the period feel consider changing a few more things and maybe add another color in as well. :).

I saw this post and felt compelled to speak..lol..type...I would stand in the door way of the kitchen/dining area and the living room...find a color that co-exists in both rooms and paint the cabinets in that color, you would need to scuff the faces on the fronts of the bases and doors, to give them whats called a tooth...just means to make the paint bond better... if you can find a common color between the rooms...it will have a more unified look...also if you were to go all white, they would blend in more with the baseboard trim and door trims, in both rooms...you can't go wrong either way...I would say if you are able to cordinate the cabinets to both rooms and lose the bi-fold doors, now I have a question? is that a dark trim around the top of the living room? I have a disorder maybe it's a matchy matchy thing? but I would match that to the base boards and door trim or vice versa...just my thoughts on your neat little nook...

Linda, I love the fabric you chose. Moire is a favorite of mine, and the colors in the plaid are lovely. I can just see you doing the victory dance! LOL I feel like we only have pieces of information, so I am going to ask a few questions. It would also help to have pix of the whole room, or even a drawing of the floor plan so that we can tell what is going on in the entire space. What is the look you are trying to achieve - casual yet elegant? More french country but not as formal? Something else? If the cabinet has to stay where it is (and I am never convinced of that on the first shot, LOL) do you ever open the window? If not, you need to take down those draperies and put them on either side of the window by the chairs. I would Think about either doing a solid, closed panel of the fabric, or a large piece of artwork, or a shelving unit that sits on the cabinet, finished to match, that will completely hide the window. What you are doing with the side panels is drawing more attention to the window back there, rather than making it disappear. And disappear is what you want it to do as long as the cabinet is in front of it. What is on the wall behind the couch - another window like the one by the chairs? Do you need matching treatments for both sets of windows if that is the case, and do you have enough fabric to do it? Yes, I could easily see green in there. I would think about doing the couch in a pretty shade of green, or in a deeper shade of the wall color (which I couldn't find on the BM site - do you have the color number instead of the name - Millet didn't come up). Do the wing chair in a stripe of some kind. Maybe something like this? capulet stripe, bluebell Does the other large armchair stay? Does it need to be re-covered? Then perhaps this toile for some pillows for the couch and one lumbar pillow on the chair? rustic life, lake There is also Rustic Life, Porcelain, that might work, but may be too bright. As for roman shades, it would depend on whether you intend to have the plaid panels on those windows, and whether you need privacy, light control, or just a window treatment for looks. A rug is hard to suggest because I can't really see what your floors are now and how much space you are trying to cover. It also depends again on where you are headed style-wise. Of course, the fabric suggestions are just that- suggestions. Too hard to tell colors for sure on the monitor to know that they would match - but it gives you some ideas about what kinds of fabrics you might try to find. Once you get all those things in place, then you can also bring in more green in your accessories - and you already have some plants to help that along, too. Ad for the knobs on the cabinet, I would be inclined to choose a brushed metal finish of some kind - nickel, brass? What do you like, and have already in the room in things like lamps and pix frames?

Pcweary, how is the cabinet stripping on "our" cabinets going? Ive done minimal stripping in my day. Any advice based on what products/methods worked and didnt work for you? Im leaning against the trim and the beadboard veneer afterall. I read the article volleyhead posted, and I think Ill just keep it simple. Im leaning against painting due to the lack of details in the cabinets. I definitely decided against painting them white, as I dont like to clean cabinets. I dont like to clean anything, actually. Having decided against white is another knock against the beadboard and trim idea, because I think that would have looked so nice in white but not many other colors. I read a post by rhome410 on Satin Waterlox on wood, and rhome410 was kind enough to send me pictures of wood that she has done with this product, and it looked good enough to eat! Im very excited, I think I will give that a try on a door and see how it goes. I dont, however, want to strip the face and sides of the cabinets, wonder if I could paint those? Or maybe leave the faces as is and strip the sides. Ill have to experiment and see what color I come up with on the doors first I guess. So, for the moment, that is the current plan. People seem to love Dove White(BM ) and Dover white for SW. Good luck, picking colors for painted cabs has been my hardest decision. If you have white appliances, I wouldn't go to creamy or tan.

I was looking for a similar white for trim and came across BM Maynonaise. We've done one room and I love it. Definitely not a bright white. Not sure how it would look next to white appliances.

My experience is that white appliances tend to be a cool, bright white. If you try to match the cabinet color to your appliances then I don't think you'll end up with something that will add warmth.

I think you should try to pick a cabinet color that will fit well w/your BS. IMHO, appliances w/o panels never match--either they stand out or they blend in. White appliances w/white cabinets will probably blend pretty well, even if the different whites are "off". However, if you take the cab color to "leaning-toward-tan", the white appliances will probably appear bright white and the cabs may take on a dingier appearance. Just something to think about.

FWIW I have Benjamin Moore Moderne White in my bathroom, and it reads green against stark white porcelain fixtures (what I was looking for in there, but possibly not ideal for your scenario).

Looking at the BM whites card up against my white stove, I would likely choose Alabaster as the best white that reads slightly creamy against the stark white yet without looking dingy or grayed out.

My stove is porcelain, not steel, but this might help get the idea? Alabaster is the 5th from the left on top.

Ack! It just occurred to me that my colors are Sherwin Williams, not Benjamin Moore. Sorry! (I had them made up in BM Aura, which I can highly recommend.)

I did just read other white-cab-paint thread here on GW which pointed out that the Alabaster looked far too stark white for one poster. In that case you might want to look at darkening it in tone, which any paint store can do.

Well, I went to the paint store and the clerk made it sound as if I'd be crazy to pick a color w/out comparing the paint chip to the actual brand/color appliance I'll be using - different whites and all that, again.

So, the cabinet shop has come to a screeching halt much to everyone's (read dh's) dismay. Heading to the appliance department this afternoon...

The winner is...

BM Waterborne Satin Impervo White Dove OC-17.

The cab shop usually uses an oil-based paint, but today I ran across a Born Paint Company website that states "When using white as a finish coat keep in mind that oil will turn yellow (and start doing so within 6 months) where latex keeps it color without turning yellow".

Yes, they say that alkyd whites yellow, however, all of the trim in my house is painted white with oil based paint and it hasn't yellowed at all, that I can tell, and some of it is 10 yrs old. No latex cures as hard as alkyd (DH ran the coatings dept of a specialty chemical company for years and knows everything there is to know about latex paint and even he wouldn't paint trim or cabinets with latex). Having said all of that, my trim isn't sitting next to powder coated white appliances.

On a happier note, BM dove white is beautiful (was my first choice before I switched to stained wood). Good luck!

I always thought that BM white dove was a "brighter white", not a warmer white. Is that true?

Mahlgold, I just made the big decision myself this week. I chose BM Dove White after taking home what seemed like a hundred samples. So with the caveat that I don't actually have the cabs yet, I found it to be a warm white, sort of muted, with tones of yellow and gray (which was important as I'm tying those two colors together in my design).

I think what I was looking for was the off-white that Pottery Barn wood furniture seems to come in. I don't know if that's what this is but I really liked it. People's photos here helped, although your monitor will vary, I know.
