12 years agoDo you have a basic room drawing with measurements? That would help.
I have a similar sized kitchen (11'2x19'2) and am embarking on the plan below, despite astute forum members warning me off the pinch points. My island will seat 4 with perpendicular seating. I could have had an easier time seating 4 with "across" seating, but then I would've had to give up my pantry. I'll let you know in 6 weeks whether I made the right call!
I think Laur66 has a similar size kitchen with island seating for 4 (5?). She did it with an interesting angled island end.

12 years agoAs Co-Co mentions above, a layout of your kitchen would really help. In a word, "Yes" you can get an island for 4 in a 20 x 11 kitchen. Keep in mind, to seat 4 comfortably, you're going to need at least 2' width for each person, so the island will need to be at least 8' long. Our kitchen is 21'8" x 12'1" and our island with seating for 4 is 5' x 9'. There is plenty of room to move on all sides of the island.

Comments (48)I have an eat in kitchen with a solid wood Ethan Allen Table that I bought 12 years ago when I moved here that had sides that go down to make it a little table for two. I decided to invest in a good table that can be very expendable since I am using my dining room as part of my home office. I can make the sides go up to a round table that is 42" wide with the 4 matching chair and the table sits 4. Add the leaf in the middle of the table and the table become an oval and fits 6 people comfortably without bumping into each other. I am not sure when I renovate my kitchen and change out the laminate counters if I am going to extend the counter top on the bar area to allow seating for 2 people like many of my neighbors have since it takes up walking space. Right now I have never entertained more than 6 people formally. If there are more than that, it can be a buffet with people sitting on the sofa and recliner to use the coffee table and end tables. I have a home office in the living room and dining room so IF I have to, I could use the conference big cherry desk for sitting if I had an informal buffet. Comments (15)Sounds like a great idea if you're doing the top to match the counters. Otherwise, you might also check at table stores. Not furniture stores, but if you're anywhere near an urban area there should be table specialists. They can probably do a better job, cheaper, for you. A metal pedestal will give you a thinner base, leaving more room for knees if that's important to you. Also, a curved base is more comfortable than one with unseen corners to bump into. The top depends on what you mean by moved. By one person? Two? Shoved over a little to clean? Carried by one person into a different room? One caution on light tables--light enough to move is good, but you don't want it to be easy to move. That means that any kid who wants to make a point can shove it, any little stumble can send plates flying, etc. Heavy equals stable. Look for just light enough for your purposes. Really and truly, you might want to look into Formica. :) It's very functional. Or you could have a wood top, with a Formica "pad" (just the Formica, not the underlayment) that you can remove and stow in the garage when you want to. I always had a strong vision for this kitchen, and part of the vision was the absence of upper cabinets and a wall of statement tile. I am obsessed with Moroccan mosaics, but when I priced them out, the real mosaic, i.e. the pattern made up of actual small pieces of tile, was prohibitively expensive. Lookalike tiles produced here that are just a stamp of the pattern on tile were cheap but looked cheap, the printed pattern began to peel off in a very short time. The tile I ended up with, I first found online here at like $30 PER TILE. And I was ready to buy it! My DH, though, who is of Arab extraction and very wily, saw the stamp on the back of the tile that read "Doremail" in Arabic, and told me to look for the factory online first. Lo and behold, not only is this factory online, but when I wrote to them, they were perfectly pleasant and professional. We bought this tile https://doremail.com/en/andalusian-tiles/719-sevilla.html and this tile https://doremail.com/en/oriental-tiles/895-fares.html 150 sqft airlifted to Dulles airport was only $1,500, which is basically the price of midrange Home Depot tile! And there are so many other gorgeous options. So very happy to give them the plug. Re: breakfast nook, I wanted to buy specifically from the restaurant supplier because the benches/booths you get in regular furniture stores are not designed with the same level of quality and detail. People who make furniture for restaurants understand that the goal is to make the customer so comfortable in the chair that he/she will want to sit there for a long time and order more. So if you look at your standard diner booth, you'll see that it is angled in the seat, in the back, in the shin area, and that makes it much more comfortable than your standard 90-degree angle bench you buy in "regular people" furniture stores. And it's not THAT much more expensive, and you can get it made to custom size very easily because they are used to it. Comments (5)You need a minimum of 24” per person for comfortable seating. If your island is 80” that gives you 3 people along the long side. You could not have any cabinet at the end, the last 15”, and that would give you room for one more person, assuming that the end of the island is at least 39” wide. You just have to make sure that the person at the end of the long side and the person on the short side aren’t sharing the same leg space. Assuming counter height, the person on the long side would theroreticly take about 15” of leg space That means the island would need to be at least 39” (15+24) wide at the end to comfortably seat both someone at the end of the long side and also someone on the short side. It is nice to have a seat on the short side as it is easier to talk to people when everyone isn’t lined up in a row. Also, remember that if you are doing counter height seating a 15” overhang is recommended for comfort. We did 16” throughout the long side of our island and 12” at the end for extra clearance with an aisle, with the thought that we aren’t going to often have 4 people sitting at the island at once In reality it happens a lot and we probably should have done 15” at the end too, but it has been fine so far....See Moresweetbabyjames5
