I saw that show also and I would have liked to go green also but the companies charge for the privilege. I heard one company on this old house say that people want it so they can get more for it. If you do I hope you post pictures.

I have a shower pan made out of glass and mirror - custom terrozzo. When we built this house 7 years ago, I went around to glass shops and asked for their broken pieces. My uncle made the pan for us. I can say that its a very hard and tough surface. No cracking. I would think they would be a good counter surface. I had plans on an island made w/ broken wine bottles. I decided against it b/c of reviews of cement kithen counters. I think they would have the same suseptibility of staining as concrete.

I'm as green as anyone here but I'm not sure if you're talking about terrazzo-look (glass chips in concrete) or 100% glass. Anything that requires more concrete, which is an extremely environmentally-unfriendly product, to manufacture, is just greenwashing IMO. Having said so, Vetrazzo and Icestone are the two terrazzo types I've seen mentioned on this forum in the past. Both are pricey.

We were all ready to go with Icestone- we had everything picked out, and even found it for relatively cheap (under $50 sf). It just wasn't that great looking. I wouldn't rip it out if someone else put it in, but there was no wow the way I had expected. On top of that, it etched, stained, and the glass bits broke (Tom tends to tap whatever is in his hand on whatever is close by- really not good when that generates shards of glass!). Enviroglas has a resin-based binder rather than concrete, so you may want to check them out. The sheer number of choices with them just flat out overwhelmed me.

We loved the Shetkastone sample we have, and it held up well. We went safer and cheaper since we have no intention of staying in this house long term.

Like bluekitobsessed, I'm skeptical about the "greenness" of glass counters. If it's terrazzo, with glass embedded in concrete, then you have the environmental issues associated with the manufacture of concrete. If it's glass being melted down and re-cast into slabs then huge amounts of energy are required to do the melting. Recycling is great in principle, but with glass the environmental payoff is hard to find.

I looked into IceStone - love the look, love the idea, small firm manufacturing in Brooklyn. Price was prohibitive for us: they can only manufacture in smaller slabs, which would mean our counters would need much more material than anticipated, with a high wastage. My GC went to Brooklyn to meet with them, with his fabricator, to see if he could negotiate a price break for a new firm (he has some pretty high-end clients here in CT) and he may proceed, but it wasn't for us.
He did say it takes a fair amount of upkeep: the resin can stain, etch etc, just like marble. It sounded like it would be ideal for a bathroom, or an office, but not a kitchen.

Ice Stone is made from 100% recycled glass in a cement matrix. The cement is from PA and is extracted in an enviromentally friendly way. They also use all Soy Based lubricants in the plant, are the only company to be certified "Cradel to Cradel". Enviroglas is made with a plastic resin, same as some solid surface material, which is petrolium based. In my opinion the vetrazzo is made with glass that is too large. The larger "chuncks' tend to break easily if something is bumped into them.
Out of all the green glass products, Ice Stone is the most "Green". All cement based products will require sealing similar to natural stones.

The "greeniness" of glass countertops: As far as the greeniness of recycled glass countertops, my understanding is that the greeniness lies not so much in the power needed to manufacture them, but that they don't end up in a landfill. I thought that the filler for them was resin, not concrete. But even if it's concrete, the "greeniness" of locally made concrete products is that it isn't manufactured far away and transported to the area, which requires a large amount of gasoline. Nothing is perfect, but the idea is that, overall, the recycled products are green, compared to the alternatives, like granite, which requires a huge amount of resources to mine out of the earth together with environmental damage. Then must use gasoline to be transported, and more power to be custom fitted in the home. I don't know if granite can be recycled. But the engineered stone isn't recycled and ends up in a landfill. Formica gives off toxic particles or something...and isn't recycled. All the countertops use power to be formed and manufactured. That's my understanding, anyway.

I really just wanted to know if they would last. Sealing is no problem, if they need that. Granite needs to be sealed. 20 minutes every couple of years. No big deal to me. But the chipping and cracking of the glass concerns me. Still, I'll check into this more. No substance is perfect.
