Budget DIY kitchen progress pic

We've moved from moving and removing windows, removing load bearing walls, gutting the room, spraying insulation, rewiring, etc. to getting all the cabinet boxes installed this weekend!!!! Squeee!!! Here's a crappy phone pic, but I've been too busy cleaning drywall dust from every corner of the house to bust out the real camera. And I'm 7 months pregnant so I move at the pace of a dead snail.

It looks awesome! I couldn't even plant flowers when I was 7 months preggo! And I love how there are pizza boxes (?) on the stove...:-)

Your "room" looks great, I especially love the 4-legged helper you had! We have a similar sized space in Philly, and also have a roof deck. It is kind of fun having a small space, as you can change it around easily and you can splurge for special things as you don't need to fill such a large space. Astilbe, hosta's and bleeding heart are nice shade plants. I've grown them all in both containers and in the ground. Here's to enjoying a glass of wine in our outdoor rooms!

tracyjohnson1, thanks for the compliment. It's been amazing how relaxing it has been in the pool. We swim every evening and watch the sun go down. We have enjoyed our cleaner we named Bob. The PB set him up to clean for 3 hours a day. He really does a great job. I have to use the brush to sweep off the baja shelf and the benches, but he comes along and vacuums it up off the floor of the pool. The first few days the little bag was very full of PebbleTec pebbles and rock chips from construction. Be sure and empty it every day. It is gross, but the other day we unzipped the bag and there was a dead frog in it. BLAH!! Good luck with your pool. Can't wait to see pics.

HIWTHI, thank you for the kind words. I've enjoyed the challenges of re-working and re-using the old stuff, but right now I'm having a little trouble integrating the old with the new. ******************* I've added this to my kitchen thread in Smaller Homes and received some good advice, but since it involves paint colors I'd like to know if anyone in this forum has something to offer. When I was planning the kitchen 'refresh' I had in mind that the fridge cabinet and the cabinet on either side would be green, to tie the fridge cab into the base cabinets. Then I decided to put an open shelf to the right of the fridge cabinet, in the same style as the vintage-style rounded shelves beside the sink, and the open cookbook shelf, seen in these pics: I painted it white, to match the other open cabinets, and to tie it into the older cabinets that remain on either side of the stove, but I'm wondering if it would look better green. Another GW member suggested painting the edges green, and I'm considering that option. Also considered using wallpaper on the back, to break up the big white mass. Pics of the offending cabinet, on the left (upper cabinets on the right are staying, the base cabinet and countertop will be replaced): The white is OK--I can live with it until the kitchen is finished, and make a decision then. Give me a hammer and a jigsaw and I'm good--solving this paint dilemma...not so much. Any suggestions? Here is a link that might be useful: Kitchen album

Thanks so much for the feedback everyone!!! I don't have time right now to address everyone's posts individually (I have to get my butt off this couch and into the shower because we're heading to a party soon), but I will try to answer some questions quickly: The paint color on the walls is BM Clinton Brown. I got it mixed in Aura and it went on beautifully. Never ending- Yes, the walls are textured! We had some imperfections in the old plaster that would have caused just regular paint to look horrible. So, I bought some "linen" textured wallpaper and put it up first and then painted over it. I also used a semi-gloss paint to purposely highlight the texture a little bit. I love it, as it adds a certain amount of warmth to the room. As for the light over the sink, that was there when we moved in, but I saw the exact same fixture at HD. Pretty sure it's under $10 :) It's just a globe, but I will try to get a pic for you later. I know I should move the coffee maker. I used to have it by the micro in the beginning, but that's because before the reno, that was the only outlet I had to use. The one by the fridge had the fridge plugged into it!! I guess I just moved it because I didn't like having so many things plugged into that one outlet... the micro, the toaster and the coffee maker. However, it does make logical sense and it is kind of a pain to make coffee in the corner I have it in now. The towels I found at B,B&B and the potholders I found at Target :) And I found some Robins egg blue fiestaware containers that I am dying to get into my kitchen. I can't justify them now... but they are already on my christmas list, haha. :)

Well, my husband has done most of it, but I've been helping him hoist drywall and cabinets here and there too. But he gets the major credit for busting his butt! I'm usually much more help to him for this stuff, so it's been hard huffing and puffing just trying to sweep up after him.

I love that shade of blue! I can't believe you are building a person and a kitchen at the same time. Makes me tired just thinking about it! Looking forward to the finished pics, I hope you love it!

LOL about the pizza boxes! I had to feed two 8 years olds my son had over for a sleep over last night! Yesterday the stove was finally hooked up for the first time in weeks. It's new and dual fuel so only the oven was functional--I have to call the propane company now for them to deliver a tank.

Williamsem-the color is Olympic "secret passage". It looks less blue in person. I took my grey card for my camera to the store to find a more true neutral grey without green or purple undertones. Going from a red kitchen, it's kind of bland for me right now, but I'm hoping to jazz it up with lime green, orange, and yellow accessories.

Your cabinets look a lot like mine. Are they Forevermark RTA cabinets in Shakertown? We just had them installed but had a contractor do it. In our younger days it is something we would have done ourselves.

Denali, they are GHI RTAs. They do look very similar! We were planning this pre surprise pregnancy and then we figured better to get it done pre baby. I may be less helpful as the size of a bus, but it's easier now while baby is safe inside and not trying to crawl around construction debris.

Thanks, everyone! I will be posting more pics as we finish (is it ever really finished though... LOL) up. Hubby says he should be done with the counters and have the sink in by the weekend.

What type of cabinets are those? Did you have someone come in and make/install or did you go with RTA?

Looking great. I have to say, Nicole, as a fellow photographer, I LOVE that you took your grey card to the store to try to keep a neutral grey for comparison!!!! After a while of looking at paint chips, my eyes go completely buggy - I never thought to bring along my grey card...so doing that the next time!

(Oh, and congrats on your upcoming little one as well!)

lvillecards01- we went with RTA. They're made by GHI. We got some online and some from a local discount building place.

andreak100--after bringing home 8,000 paint cards only to realize they all had some other color cast to them the idea came to me.

Thank you everyone else! We're headed on a road trip this weekend to Ikea (first time to one ever!) to get a butcher block counter for the kitchen peninsula. Still working on getting things cleaned up and put away. We have hardware on, crown molding and under and over cabinet lights. Still need to clean up the warzone that is the rest of the house and paint the dining room that is now open to the kitchen.

Looking good.

We did a lot of home renovations while I was pregnant, with our second and third child. Knowing another one was coming along meant we had to make room for them :)
