Calling out to Sumi-e users

We are narrowing down our backsplash choices and design. We are planning on using Sumi-e Ogari 1x1 natural as an accent. We are trying to determine whether or not to use it behind the range. It is not a smooth surface, but rather, has some etched-like texture. Our concern is that behind the range it may be a PIA to clean regarding grease and general cooking exhaust.

I know that I've seen a sumi-e used all throughout the kitchen (but I can't remember whose kitchen it was and neither a GW or google search is helping me) in someone's kitchen. If you have used this behind your range/cooktop, could you relate of how easy or not easy it is to clean up after? We re not frequent fryers -- tend to use the grill for burgers, fish. I do sear meat, but that's a rare occasion. What products do you use to clean it?
