New GW Member wanting to set up a few trades
Comments (16)I'll be interested in the columbines and the horseradish! I could send leaves from African Violets (two types), and also have many houseplants from which I could make cuttings. I have a million coleus seedlings because I didn't notice how many I had planted. :) I have many hostas, some of which likely have babies growing underneath them. Since I don't know their names, I don't know if they specifically grow in zone 4. I have a bunch of spirea japonica which looks to be a shrub that can handle zone 4....See Morelast call - 'roid pepper seeds....for my wants, see photo

Comments (4)This is long, but I gained so much information from just lurking and searching on this site I am more than compelled to help with what we have learned MARBLE ...I found lots of information on this site through a "marble countertops" search. Both GW and my own research have been proven with 6 months' experience in a working kitchen: Statuary (or any other) marble is GOING TO ETCH. It is also GOING TO STAIN. I did not really believe this when reading it and hearing it.LISTEN: this is true. A way to minimize the effect of the etching is to start with honed marble. A reputable fabricator and installer is also important/seams make a difference so research and get a CLEAR WRITTEN AGREEMENT about location of seams ahead of time. Sealant is very important at the time of installation. Even so, we were surprised at the etching....even with being careful, many substances left on the surface for any amount of time may leave spots that are dull in comparison to the rest of the surface. It doesn't look bad necessarily...but is definitely there and is not "perfect". Actually, the surface (being stone) was not "perfect" from the beginning... there will be some little spots (tiny) that you either have to live with or have "filled" in granite, soapstone, or marble. But it is still really gorgeous. We are pleased with the installation and performance of the marble. To start with, we preferred the look of honed instead of polished marble so that helped. Carrera marble has a lot of smaller markings in it (both brown and gray) and is really more gray when looked at overall than some other marbles such as Calacutta. This also helps with the etching and staining. Although we really liked Calacutta in the end it did not seem worth the additional cost in our layout- so we did use Carrera. Overall, I'm very satisfied as is DH. We have tried with success 600 wet/dry sandpaper to polish out a spotty area that was caused by what we think was Diet Coke "spray". I think we would have been disappointed in using anything polished due to the etching, but maybe also b/c we just like the honed look. LOVE the way it performs for rolling out dough, etc. NOTE about backsplash for Carrera: be careful. Samples do not always represent how gray or how white or brown the finished countertops will be. Maybe even have the countertop installed and take the (I know its hard to wait and may be extra expense) time to look at backsplash options then... Marble is SO PRETTY in bathrooms but is a little scary as far as maintenance...still not too sure about stone in the shower area as far as maintenance...ended up with porcelain tile and happy after 6 months with the chores. Wouldn't be happy with staining and etching in this setting. GRANITE: Still a lot of great options that are so durable and forgiving. Some of the options for bathroom countertops are great. Honed is a VERY BAD idea for Absolut: this finish ends up with grease-like stains. Did not make this mistake but have observed it in multiple settings. Note that ANY granite is going to have mica (ie: shiny) spots in it. It will not mix well even in honed finish with things like a Kohler black and tan cast iron finish. Granite isn't dated if it fits with the cabinets, flooring, etc. but still be careful. So expected now, but some of the solid surface is worth looking at in many settings. Solid surface can really look like formica if you don't watch out! It is important to remember that DARK granite has the characteristics that are so forgiving. LIGHT granite will etch and stain just about the same as say, marble or limestone. So if you just love the way the lighter marble looks, don't substitute light granite thinking it is so much more "practical"...it's NOT. Granite looks more contemporary no matter what you do in kitchen or bath than, say, marble. That should be okay, right? Homes don't stagnate, they are maintained. Or they go the other way....not good! SOAPSTONE: We LOVE our soapstone tops. We don't love (still) having to oil them. This will end but hasn't yet.... Soapstone is very forgiving (remember hs lab tables!) but does CHIP and scratch EASILY. It blends really well with lots of finishes. Final notes about installation/fabrication of any countertop material: Seriously look at references of installers/fabricators. We had a slightly bad experience regarding seams in a spot that should not have had seams. Although it worked out, we had to eventually agree to pay more than originally agreed upon total price to have non-seamed top in one area. Still feeling a little burned on this. The installer/fabricator did not do what should have been done. Their mistake, not ours. SO, we recommend that anyone have a WRITTEN AND DRAWN OUT agreement as to where ANY seams will be(sometimes a seam is not visible/does not matter. Sometimes it REALLY matters). Our experience was that the fabricator/installer mis-measured a remnant, then seamed a piece that should have been "solid". Having no signed agreement, even though we had provided exact measurements, we had no recourse. Not terribly expensive at all, it just didn't feel good since we thought we did our part. Happy now to have the finished top, not seamed, in place. Great work, great result......See MoreCalling all GW angels...Backsplash help!!!
Comments (41)SaltLife, happy to answer your questions about Artistic Tile…there is a wide range of prices. From the ones that I priced out, they were anywhere from $20 to over $200 (ouch!) per SF. I love Arpell - it was one of the ones on my “short list” - it was around $100. The waterjet is definitely their higher priced line. Others are much less - for example, the glass Coltrane Treble Gloss mosaic pattern was around $25/SF, and very pretty. We chose a waterjet mosaic (Veneto), but it was (well) under $100 - a splurge for me, but love, love it. I should mention that our designer was passing along her discount of up to 25% on the retail pricing. So, I guess the bottom line is you shouldn’t rule out Artistic Tile because of price - they do have some relatively reasonable options! Also, if you haven’t already looked at New Ravenna, they have beautiful patterns, too. And they have a quick ship line that is less pricey. Good luck!...See MoreUser
