Tile Is In!

And I really, really like it so far---grouting comes tomorrow.

Nevertheless, now I understand all the posts saying, ''I don't like my tile," or, "Help, I think I made a big mistake when choosing my tile."

It's not that I'm not happy with the tile---I still like it very much. And I do think it is just the look I had in mind. But I've never had a full backsplash of anything before, and no tile backsplash. So it's kind of a shock. It seems like when I walk in the kitchen all I see is the backsplash--it looks huge! So I did have a moment or two of doubt. However, now that it's all in, I think we made a good choice for our kitchen; but I still will need a little time to adjust to the total look.

We don't have a lot on our counters, but I also think that putting the things that do live on our counters back will help make the kitchen look more normal again.

Pictures!! We need pictures!

I agree about a tile backsplash being kind of shocking, especially if you're used to life without one. But as with everything in the new kitchen, I bet you'll get used to it, and once everything is in its accustomed home on the counters, it won't be the first thing you see.

I agree with Just. When my floors went in I hated them. I went from very light carpet to very dark hardwood. By the second day I was starting to like it and by the third day I realized how beautiful the floors really are.

I was so upset about my cabinets. I thought they looked just terrible and not at all what I envisioned. There is still a day or two of work on them but when I got home from work today the finishing molding was on most of the cabinets. Now I am starting to think it looks good.

Please, please, please post pictures. It is really cruel and unusual punishment to keep us in suspense!

Over floor, yes (sometimes), but not over the walls. This requires removal of the existing walls, then new wall material, cement backer board, etc. then tile - a full job. And be sure to pick a pro. I got a call to look at a 4 yr old (new) shower that was part of a new addition. They said a couple tiles (wall mosaic) were a bit loose, and it was leaking into the basement. When I removed the tile, silicone patch and scratched out the grout, I could see the corner wall studs an inch wide! Not a good install, but shows what some guys will do to save time and materials.

Marana, you might want to check out the "Garden Junk" forum as there are several folks who do mosaics for outside. I'm sure if you posted your question in that forum you would get very good replies. There is also a Stained Glass and Mosaic forum someone just posted a msg yesterday (10/23). I don't do mosaics but just love your idea of places the tiles down as they are. I believe the difference in color is too great with the white and brown. Why? 3 reasons 1. The products that are cemented to the building you will not redo anytime soon. Messy , dirty, expensive and just not worth the trouble 2. When you add a product to the building structure. Windows , floors they must last a long time. Durability, wear and tear, and STYLE. All equal a story of when the home was designed. The look over a period of time 10 years + and the home will become "out of date" Needs a face lift . 3. The homes we admire, the Museums, Churches, Libraries, Opera House have one common thread. At a glance they are timeless. Built in 1940, 1990 etc The crystal clear item is not seen For this reason I would not go "trendy". Generally our first choice is the right one. Simple and elegant How do you change this ad time moves on. Color Bedroom a change of bedspread. Bathroom towels become a dark navy or deep forest green. Yellow for spring Paint a wall blue, hang a piece of art The change is simple and your money well spent for resale Take a moment to do another board Remove the brown and replace with a neutral. Try an Odegard runner - There are so many options Enjoy

I tried to insert a photo of the tile from the tile website, but it's not working. So I've included a link to my original post about this tile, in which a photo of the tile was kindly provided by Suzannes.

The photo doesn't do it justice--it's a creamier color and there is variation among the various tiles that make up the pattern that make it look more interesting, like stone. Yet it's smooth when you touch it and easy-to-clean porcelain.

Sorry, I sometimes think I'm the only person in North America without a smart phone, and we have no camera, so no pictures of our kitchen. If DH can borrow camera from work, maybe I can post a photo.

We are doing a refresh of our kitchen, not a complete reno. Put in flooring last year, and this year replaced our old appliances with SS and put in Black Pearl granite countertops. We saved a bit more and now we have the tile. It's so nice seeing it finally all come together.
